It is estimated that Australians alone spend on average $10.8 billion AUD (approximately $9.99 billion USD) every year on goods they do not use — more than the total government spending on universities and roads. That is an average of $1,250 AUD (approximately $1,156 USD) for each household. All the things we buy that then just sit there gathering dust are waste — a waste of money, a waste of time, and waste in the sense of pure rubbish. As the author Clive Hamilton observes, ‘The difference between the stuff we buy and what we use is waste.’

Elizabeth Catlett was born in Washington, D.C. in 1915. As a granddaughter of slaves, Catlett heard the stories of slaves from her grandmother. After being disallowed entrance from the Carnegie Institute of Technology because she was black, Catlett studied design and drawing at Howard University. She became one of the first three students to earn a master’s degree in fine arts at the University of Iowa. Throughout her life, she created art representing the voices of people suffering from social injustice. She was recognized with many prizes and honors both in the United States and in Mexico. She spent over fifty years in Mexico, and she took Mexican citizenship in 1962. Catlett died in 2012 at her home in Mexico.

Although there is usually a correct way of holding and playing musical instruments, the most important instruction to begin with is that they are not toys and that they must be looked after. Allow children time to explore ways of handling and playing the instruments for themselves before showing them. Finding different ways to produce sounds is an important stage of musical exploration. Correct playing comes from the desire to find the most appropriate sound quality and find the most comfortable playing position so that one can play with control over time. As instruments and music become more complex, learning appropriate playing techniques becomes increasingly relevant.

When the price of something fundamental drops greatly, the whole world can change. Consider light. Chances are you are reading this sentence under some kind of artificial light. Moreover, you probably never thought about whether using artificial light for reading was worth it. Light is so cheap that you use it without thinking. But in the early 1800s, it would have cost you four hundred times what you are paying now for the same amount of light. At that price, you would notice the cost and would think twice before using artificial light to read a book. The drop in the price of light lit up the world. Not only did it turn night into day, but it allowed us to live and work in big buildings that natural light could not enter. You can correct any mistake and nobody will ever know the difference. This is easier said than done, of course. Send is your computer’s most attractive command. But before you hit the Send key, make sure that you read your document carefully one last time.

Get past the ‘I wish I hadn’t done that!’ reaction. If the disappointment you’re feeling is linked to an exam you didn’t pass because you didn’t study for it, or a job you didn’t get because you said silly things at the interview, or a person you didn’t impress because you took entirely the wrong approach, accept that it’s happened now. If you care deeply about something, you may place greater value on your ability to succeed in that area of concern. The internal pressure you place on yourself to achieve or do well socially is normal and useful, but when you doubt your ability to succeed in areas that are important to you, your selfworth suffers. Situations are uniquely stressful for each of us based on whether or not they activate our doubt. It’s not the pressure to perform that creates your stress. Rather, it’s the self-doubt that bothers you. Doubt causes you to see positive, neutral, and even genuinely negative experiences more negatively and as a reflection of your own shortcomings. When you see situations and your strengths more objectively, you are less likely to have doubt as the source of your distress.

Since each one is drawing on their past personal experiences, the pace of the exchange is as fast as memory. Mirae's Story

Whenever it was time to get ready for a new school year, I was nervous about making new friends. I tried to make some friends in my first year of high school, but it wasn't easy because I cannot hear or speak. In order to communicate, I need someone to speak sign language or use writing. As not many people would do that, I was usually alone at school. My second year in high school was somewhat different though. It all started when Minju sat next to me on the first day of school. My heart leapt when she asked if she could sit next to me because everyone had told me about her kindness. Instead of judging me by my disability, she accepted me for who I was. And just like that, we became the best friends in our school. Thanks to her, I became more open-minded and made some other close friends. Then one day, Minju gave me a note. It said, "If we learn how to use sign language, we will be able to talk with each other! Why don't you teach us?" I was shocked and deeply touched because it was the first time someone other than the people in my family wanted to learn my way of communication. Since learning sign language takes a long time, I started by teaching my friends fingerspelling, the hand representation of Hangeul. Then, a miracle happened. More and more of my classmates started using fingerspelling to talk to me. Getting to know and communicating with a broader range of classmates was a thrilling experience. Of course, there were some difficulties, especially because I couldn't understand when more than two people were talking at the same time. But it must have been hard for my classmates to communicate with me, too. So I was more than grateful. As it turned out, my friends had been secretly teaching the whole class fingerspelling whenever they had the chance. Knowing this must have taken a long time and a lot of effort, I asked them one day, "Why did you spend so much time learning and teaching fingerspelling?" I can still remember what Minju said. She said, "In fifth grade, I had to be in a wheelchair for a whole year after a car accident. Back then, my friends pushed the chair for me, hung out with me, and never found it embarrassing to be with me. That's what friends are for, Mirae. They stay together and have fun whatever may happen."

Jenny's Story

"Will you be my date for homecoming?" When one of my best friends Alan asked me this question, it didn't take me more than a second to say, "Yes!" The night turned out to be great as I expected. We had so much fun, dancing and enjoying each other's company. Alan was even more excited than I was, introducing me to all his friends. Walking me home, he told me it was his first time at a school dance, and he felt like any other student. Listening to this broke my heart since I was one of the bullies who had given him a hard time. I am deeply ashamed of this, but until last year, I foolishly had made fun of students with disabilities. I thought there was nothing to learn from them, and I was afraid that my friends would turn against me if I talked to an intellectually challenged boy. So, when I first saw Alan last year in the school cafeteria and he asked if he could sit next to me, I made fun of him. The people around us laughed so much that he ran away. The next time I saw Alan was at a Special Olympics Unified basketball match. Since my teacher knew that I had bullied some classmates, she told me to participate in the program. Although I didn't like the idea, I promised that I would give it a try. It felt awkward at first, but Alan made me feel comfortable by asking me how I was and handing me water whenever I looked tired. During the game, Alan's moves were so impressive that I couldn't take my eyes off him. Everyone cheered as he made a basket. I felt terrible that I had looked down on him. So I apologized after the game. We have become very close since then. As it turned out, Alan loves hiphop just like me. When we listen to music together, he dances with such freedom that I can't help myself from joining him. Alan shows his emotions in the most honest way. Being with him has taught me how to be true to myself whatever other people may think of me. Now, we are planning to participate in the school talent show. I will sing and Alan will dance to our favorite hiphop music. When we are together, we will shine as one.

Sometimes dolphins team up to rescue an injured friend. In Ulsan, South Korea, in June 2008, about twelve dolphins were swimming very close together. It appeared that one of the females was seriously injured. Whenever she started struggling to breathe, the other dolphins crowded around her, diving beneath her and supporting her from below. After thirty minutes, the dolphins formed something similar to a boat; they swam side by side with the injured female on their backs. By keeping the injured dolphin above water, they helped her to breathe. This act of helping seems to suggest that dolphins are capable of assisting others when they are in trouble and that they live peacefully with one another. We hear beautiful stories about friendship in the animal world. We humans also should learn to live together, helping friends in need and building precious relationships.

Usain Bolt, the Jamaican sprinter, broke the world record for the 100-meter sprint in 2009, clocking a time of 9.58 seconds. Animals like the adult cheetah can run 100 meters in about six seconds. So what is the limit to how fast a human can run 100 meters? Sports scientists say that sprinters' speed is influenced by how hard they hit the ground with their feet and by how many steps they take. Cheetahs do not hit the ground as hard as humans, but they can take twice as many steps as we do. This is why they can run fast. The problem for humans is that the harder they hit the ground, the more time they spend in the air, which makes their steps longer but reduces the number of steps they can take. Therefore, maximum running speed is attained when the combination of force applied to the ground and stride frequency is optimal. Unfortunately, this combination also depends on the runner's size, leg length, and other factors that vary among individuals. Many experts predict, however, that a human being could probably run the 100-meter sprint in just over nine seconds. Maybe future technology will help runners run even faster than they do today.

"Hurry! Hurry up!" Two people with brooms furiously sweep the ice in front of a rock that slides across a sheet of ice. "Whoa!" The sweepers stop as the rock settles into the house. "Nice job!" All four players bump fists indicating success. Have you guessed the sport? It's called curling. One might expect that a curling stone sliding across the ice would continue in a straight line according to Newton's first law of motion. However, the stone will begin to curl when it loses its speed even though it is three or four times as heavy as a bowling ball. This is why players have to direct the stone's path carefully, and they do this by sweeping. By rubbing the ice with the broom, the sweepers are generating heat to reduce friction between the stone and the ice. This results in the stone going straighter and farther. If the sweepers stop, the stone begins to curl again. Although the house — the area where the curlers aim the stone—is often blocked by an opponent's stone, curling teams can actually guide one stone behind another, which is one of the major strategic elements to the game. The precision with which the team can control the direction and speed of the stone is a major factor in the strategy of the game.

The batter swings and hits a foul ball into the stands. You reach up with your glove and catch it as other spectators clap and cheer. You look at the baseball with its smooth leather covering and bright red stitches. Do the stitches serve a purpose other than to keep the leather covering over the ball? A typical baseball has 108 double hand stitches. They serve more than just a decorative function. The stitches on a baseball actually affect the flight of the ball. Without them, a pitcher couldn't throw it as fast or as accurately. When a round object like a ball is thrown, the front part of the ball hits the air, increasing the air pressure there while the air becomes thinner at the back of the ball, making the air pressure low. This difference in air pressure creates an unwanted effect called "drag" that literally drags the ball backward and slows it down. This is where the stitches come into play. The stitches more or less scoop the air and direct it inwards towards the back of the ball. This effectively increases the net air pressure in the back of the ball, which reduces the drag. Further, as a baseball is released, the pitcher can put spin on the ball. As the ball spins, the stitches help the ball to fly in the direction the pitcher intends.

Doping in sports usually involves drugs that players illegally take to gain an unfair advantage in performance. As technology advances, however, doping is done not only with drugs but also with their equipment. That's why the term 'technology doping' was coined, referring to any form of unfair advantage gained from technology by a player or a team. In the 2008 Olympic swimming competitions, when 23 out of 25 world records were set by those in a particular swim suit, investigations concluded that it was a case of technology doping. Recently, in a 2016 international cycling event, a cyclist from Belgium was accused of technology doping when a small machine was found inside her bike frame that gave her extra power while she pedaled. A specially designed swim suit or a small device in a bicycle clearly gives an unfair advantage. They only discourage athletes who train day and night to improve their performance. Such attempts should be banned in all sports competitions. In order to preserve and promote the core value of fair competition among players, the governing bodies of various sporting events should seek measures to prevent technology doping from entering into their events. Technology has not been developed as an illegal weapon for gaining an unfair advantage. It is to be used as a tool for progress.

In the months between spring and autumn, people in Catalonia, Spain build castells during street festivals. A castell is a tower of people standing on each other's shoulders, often raised as high as ten levels. The formation of the bottom base or pinya is the first step in building a castell. Anybody who is willing to help, from children to senior citizens, can be part of the pinya by supporting the tower and protecting it from collapsing. When the pinya is formed, each level is added one after another. When the last person reaches the top and waves his or her hands, the crowd below shouts and cheers.

Building a castell means a lot to Catalonians. The knowledge about how to build castells is accumulated over generations and handed down from generation to generation within a community, and can only be learned by practice. Building one provides people with a strong sense of belonging and a heightened spirit of teamwork and cooperation. A castell requires between 75 and 500 people to build, all of whom wear a group color. The color is a proud element of a community, and young children long for the day when they can wear a shirt and play their role in building their group's castell. At a time when individual-based activities dominate most people's leisure time, this Catalan practice does seem to deserve serious attention.

Gingerbread broadly refers to any type of baked treat that is typically flavored with ginger and honey. The process of making a licitar, a type of Croatian gingerbread, is special because it requires skill and endurance. The dough matures for a few days, then is shaped in molds and baked, and then left for two weeks to dry. Coloring is the next step, after which a second drying takes place. Once dried, the licitars are decorated. Licitars are given as gifts for wedding guests, or they can be used as decorations. The custom of giving licitars is deeply rooted in Croatian tradition. Licitars are not only a tasty dessert, but they are also an artistic expression.

 

1. Prepare dough and let it mature for a few days. Then roll the dough out and shape it in molds.

2. Bake the shaped dough until it turns light yellow in color.

3. Put a string between two baked licitars.

4. Dip the stringed licitars into the glaze and hang them until they dry.

5. Decorate each licitar with a picture, a mirror, or flowers.

 

A licitar is uniquely Croatian because of the long history and the social role it has played. Croatians learned the recipe during the 16th century from their neighbors in the eastern Alps and went a step further to develop their own. Since then, making licitars has become a family tradition where secrets are passed down from generation to generation. In this way, every generation is able to leave its mark in each gingerbread they make. Licitar makers play an important social function, too. Gingerbread craftspeople appear at most festivals and fairs in Croatia. People watch cookies being made and socialize. In a time when local cultures are losing their unique identities, Croatian gingerbread craftsmanship provides us with a new perspective on traditional culture.

Tugging has long been practiced as a kind of ritual in many agricultural regions across Asia. The way the ritual is performed varies from place to place. In Cambodia, the ritual involves men tugging against women. It takes place during the New Year holidays in April in the open space of a Buddhist temple or a village center. In the Philippines, punnuk is held in the Hapao River, where people tug young trees that are tightly bundled with vines and hooked to a straw figure in the middle. In Vietnam, bamboo poles can be used for tugging. In Korean juldarigi, making a rice straw rope as well as moving it to a ritual site is part of the tradition. The rope stands for a dragon which is believed to bring rain to the region.

The tugging rituals in Asia are mostly held by rice farmers, who wish for enough rainfall and abundant harvests, so the rituals can be regarded as a form of prayer in the region. They are also performed as a way of expressing their appreciation for a good harvest. There is no intentional competitive element inherent in the rituals, and winning or losing is not emphasized. While preparing for the rituals and performing them, participants realize the importance of solidarity, cooperation, and harmony among community members.

One day while having fun traveling around the Philippines with my family, we headed to a native village, following a one-lane path scattered with rocks and mud. With tall grass blocking our view, my father suddenly hit the brakes on a sharp turn. "Wow, is that a house that they are moving?" I asked. "Yes, they're moving an entire house with large bamboo poles. It doesn't look like a newly built house, though." said my father. We didn't have the slightest clue as to why they were moving the house. Curious about the unusual sight, my father suggested, "Why don't we pull the car over and find out what they're doing?" So we got out of the car and walked to the scene to look into it. "Can I ask why you're moving the house?" I asked. And one man said, "The owner built this house down by the river. But during the rainy season, the water rose quickly and entered the house. So we all gathered to help the family relocate it to a safer place." Amused at the sight, we waited until the house was placed in a new location. Later I found out that in the Philippines, the practice of moving a house is part of a tradition called bayanihan. It's based on the spirit of cooperation, which lives on today.

I found the most interesting app today! It's an app that connects the blind with sighted helpers through a video call. I installed the app, set the language to English, and waited.

 

《How It Works》

Having dinner with my family, I heard my phone ring. I realized it was the app I had installed. I answered the phone with butterflies in my stomach. On my phone, I could see a man holding a bottle of milk. Could you read the expiration date on this bottle for me? He brought the camera close to the bottle. I could see the date ― March 5. I said, "That's way too old. It's three weeks past the expiration date." He said, "No wonder it smelled funny. Off to the trash it goes. Thank you so much." I replied, "You're welcome. Have a nice day." He said smiling, "Thanks to you, my day is brighter already." Hanging up, I realized the joy of helping others. I could use the camera on my mobile phone not only to take pictures of myself but also to help people. How fascinating! I wonder if there are other ways I can help others through my mobile phone.

In the school volunteer club today, we made natural soap. We had so much fun making beautifully colored soap with oil, water, and other ingredients. I made yellow soap using lemons and some students used chocolate for brown soap. But what does making soap have to do with volunteering? I learned the answer from my teacher, Ms. Kim. Washing your hands with soap is one of the most effective and inexpensive ways to prevent the spread of diseases. In fact, in West and Central Africa alone, the simple practice of washing hands with soap could save the lives of about half a million children each year. Yet, despite the health benefits, soap is very hard to come by in some regions since a bar of soap could cost more than a day's wages!

How can we deliver the soap we made to the people that need it? We can take the soap to local community centers that send it to countries that need soap. This way, we can get people to wash their hands at important times such as before eating or after using the bathroom. (Wait! Did I wash my hands after using the bathroom today?) I hope our soap can help people in poor countries wash their hands, and in turn, improve their health.

I was waiting outside the classroom. I was feeling sick, and I always felt this way during exam week. Today I had two exams, and unfortunately, physics was first. I hated physics because I could never get all those abstract theories straight in my head. But this was the last day of exams! I could see the light at the end of the tunnel. I took a deep breath and looked around. I saw Emma at the front of the line. She did not have a problem with physics. In fact, she did not have a problem with anything! She looked back at me and then looked away quickly. I thought she looked guilty. She was avoiding eye contact.

“Hi, Sue, now it's your favorite subject,” said Lisa, teasing me as she approached. Emma looked back again.

“Does she have a problem?” Lisa said to me. “I thought you were friends.”

“Yes, so did I,” I said. “But she has been avoiding me for two weeks now. She promised to help me prepare for the physics exam, but she ignored all my calls and texts. It was no use calling her at home, either. Her mom just told me she was busy. She doesn't remember who her friends are!” I said with anger.

Mr. Reed was addressing the class, and the other students filed into the room. I gave Lisa a worried look and followed them inside.

I could not answer the last two questions. They were beyond me. Frustrated, I looked up and saw Emma sitting in the front row. To my astonishment, she had her smartphone under the table and was stealing quick glances at it. I did not know what to think! Was that how Emma always got good grades? I felt really angry at her but did not know what to do. I thought about telling the teacher but could not bring myself to do it. “What would everyone else think of me?” I thought. “It's not fair. I've never cheated, and I ended up failing lots of exams.” With a sigh, I told myself, “Better to be a failure than a cheat.” Emma had put her smartphone away when I looked up again. She looked back at me and smiled awkwardly.

“Stop writing and put your pens down,” said Mr. Reed. He started to collect the exam papers.

“Oh, no! I didn't finish all of the questions. I'm going to fail again!”

I wanted to talk to Emma at lunchtime, but she was nowhere to be seen in the school cafeteria. The next exam was history, my favorite subject, but I did not feel good about it. I went to the school library to go over my notes one last time, but I could not concentrate on them. I still felt really conflicted about Emma. I considered reporting her to a teacher, but I just could not do it. I said to myself, “Everyone would hate me if I did that. It's not fair! Emma has been getting good grades by cheating all the time. How silly I am! I thought we were friends!”

I was sitting behind Emma again at the history exam that afternoon. This time, she did not take out her smartphone. Maybe she did not need to cheat at history. I was feeling awful again, but I had no problem with the exam. I was asking myself, “Should I tell Mr. Reed once the exam is finished? But what would happen to Emma and what about for me? What about our friendship? Wait, have we ever truly been friends?” I was filled with total confusion.

I was on the last question when I saw that Emma had her smartphone under the table. She was looking at it and did not hear Mr. Pendanski walking quietly up to her table. He said nothing. Emma looked up, surprised. He picked up her exam paper and pointed to the door. It was no use trying to hold back the tears. She could not help crying. Then she made her way to the door. As everyone watched her, I felt all my frustration turn to pity.

As I was leaving school, I heard someone come up behind me. It was Emma.

“Sue, wait!” she said. “I want to talk to you.”

Her face was pale, and her eyes were red.

“Do you think I'm a cheat, too?” she said to me. I did not know how to answer her.

“Listen. I'm really sorry I didn't answer your calls. Actually, I'm having a tough time because my dad had a heart attack two weeks ago. He is in the hospital, and I was very worried since he had a big operation today. I know it was foolish, but during the exam I was reading texts from my mom to see how things were going. Just then, Mr. Pendanski caught me and thought I was cheating. He believes me now and gave me a second chance. I'm sorry I wasn't frank with you. I know you're a good friend. When we think of culture, we first think of human cultures, of our culture. We think of computers, airplanes, fashions, teams, and pop stars. For most of human cultural history, none of those things existed. For hundreds of thousands of years, no human culture had a tool with moving parts. Well into the twentieth century, various human foraging cultures retained tools of stone, wood, and bone. We might pity human hunter-gatherers for their stuck simplicity, but we would be making a mistake. They held extensive knowledge, knew deep secrets of their lands and creatures. And they experienced rich and rewarding lives; we know so because when their ways were threatened, they fought to hold on to them, to the death. Sadly, this remains true as the final tribal peoples get overwhelmed by those who value money above humanity. We are living in their end times and, to varying extents, we're all contributing to those endings. Ultimately our values may even prove self-defeating.

Liquids are destructive. Foams feel soft because they are easily compressed; if you jump on to a foam mattress, you'll feel it give beneath you. Liquids don't do this; instead they flow. You see this in a river, or when you turn on a tap, or if you use a spoon to stir your coffee. When you jump off a diving board and hit a body of water, the water has to flow away from you. But the flowing takes time, and if your speed of impact is too great, the water won't be able to flow away fast enough, and so it pushes back at you. It's that force that stings your skin as you belly-flop into a pool, and makes falling into water from a great height like landing on concrete. The incompressibility of water is also why waves can have such deadly power, and in the case of tsunamis, why they can destroy buildings and cities, tossing cars around easily.

In the late twentieth century, researchers sought to measure how fast and how far news, rumours or innovations moved. More recent research has shown that ideas ― even emotional states and conditions ― can be transmitted through a social network. The evidence of this kind of contagion is clear: 'Students with studious roommates become more studious. Diners sitting next to heavy eaters eat more food.' However, according to Christakis and Fowler, we cannot transmit ideas and behaviours much beyond our friends' friends' friends (in other words, across just three degrees of separation). This is because the transmission and reception of an idea or behaviour requires a stronger connection than the relaying of a letter or the communication that a certain employment opportunity exists. Merely knowing people is not the same as being able to influence them to study more or over-eat. Imitation is indeed the sincerest form of flattery, even when it is unconscious.

In 2011, Micah Edelson and his colleagues conducted an interesting experiment about external factors of memory manipulation. In their experiment, participants were shown a two minute documentary film and then asked a series of questions about the video. Directly after viewing the videos, participants made few errors in their responses and were correctly able to recall the details. Four days later, they could still remember the details and didn't allow their memories to be swayed when they were presented with any false information about the film. This changed, however, when participants were shown fake responses about the film made by other participants. Upon seeing the incorrect answers of others, participants were also drawn toward the wrong answers themselves. Even after they found out that the other answers had been fabricated and didn't have anything to do with the documentary, it was too late. The participants were no longer able to distinguish between truth and fiction. They had already modified their memories to fit the group.
