Characters: King, Hermit, Bearded Man, Doctor, Bodyguard

 

A certain king wanted to know the answers to three key questions: First, what is the most important thing to accomplish in life? Second, when should he accomplish the most important thing? And third, who are the right people to help him accomplish that task? He thought that if he knew the answers to these questions, he would never fail in anything. So he declared throughout his kingdom that he would give a large reward to anyone who could answer the three questions. However, no one in the country was able to give him satisfying answers. The king then decided to consult a wise hermit. The hermit only received common people, so the king visited him wearing simple clothes.

 

Act 1, Scene 1

The king meets the hermit, who is digging the ground in front of his hut. Glancing at the king, the hermit greets him and goes on digging.

 

King: (Approaching) I have come to you, wise hermit, to ask you to answer three questions: What is the most important thing that deserves my attention? When is the right time to do that important thing? And who are the people I need most to help me accomplish it? (Without saying a word, the hermit continues digging as if he had heard nothing.)

King: You look tired. (Reaching for the hermit) Let me take the spade and work awhile for you.

Hermit: Thanks! (Giving the spade to the king, he sits down on the ground.)

Act 1, Scene 2

 

Hermit: (Watching the king digging the ground) To be honest, I know who you are. I think you possess everything you want. Are you still not satisfied?

King: Of course not!

Hermit: (Losing himself in thought for a while and rising from his seat) Now rest awhile and let me work a bit. I have to get this job done. (Not giving him the spade, the king continues to dig. The sun begins to set behind the trees.)

King: I came to you, wise man, for answers to my questions. If you can give me none, tell me so, and I will return home.

 

Act 2, Scene 1

 

A sound is heard in the woods. A bearded man appears.

 

Hermit: Here comes someone walking. Let us see who it is.

Bearded man: (Walking unsteadily, in an urgent voice) Help me, please. Have mercy on me. (Falling down on the ground unconsciously)

King: (Finding a large wound on the man’s stomach) What happened to you? Come on! Are you okay? (Putting his hand on the unconscious man’s neck to see if he is alive) Judging from your wound, I need to do something to stop the bleeding! Doctor! Doctor! (Carrying the wounded man into the hut)

 

Act 2, Scene 2

 

In the hut, a doctor is caring for the bearded man who fell down on the ground unconscious.

 

King: Is he going to make it?

Doctor: I am not sure, Your Majesty.

King: I wonder who this man is. Anyway, there’s no time for that now. You must do your best to save his life.

Doctor: Yes, Your Majesty. I will do my best.

Act 3, Scene 1

 

The hermit wakes up early the next morning and leaves for work. After the hermit is gone, the king’s bodyguards rush to the king.

 

Bodyguard: (Rushing to the king, in an urgent voice) Your Majesty, I’m afraid this place is dangerous for you.

King: Why?

Bodyguard: Last night, we found a strange man carrying a weapon. I think we had better leave this place as soon as possible.

King: Okay. I’ll return to my palace after I meet the hermit.

 

Act 3, Scene 2

 

The king sees the bearded man awake.

 

Bearded man: (In a weak voice) Forgive me!

King: Are you okay now?

Bearded man: Forgive me!

King: What do you mean? I have nothing to forgive you for.

Bearded man: Yes, Your Majesty. You do not know me, but I know you. Seeing that you took away my property and put my brother to death, I was an enemy of yours who sought to get back at you. Knowing you had gone alone to see the hermit, I planned to kill you on your way back. But on my way here, I came upon your soldiers, who wounded me. I would not have survived if you had not saved my life. If you allow it, I will serve you as your most faithful servant. Forgive me, Your Majesty!

King: I forgive you! And I also accept you as one of my men.

Act 4, Scene 1

 

The hermit is outside, planting seeds in the ground that had been dug the day before.

 

King: (Approaching the hermit) For the last time, I beg you to answer my questions, wise man.

Hermit: Your questions were answered only when the wounded man appeared.

King: What do you mean?

Hermit: If you had not dug these beds for me, that man would have attacked you. You might have been killed. So the most important time was when you were digging the beds, and I was the most important man, and helping me was your most important task. Afterwards, when that man ran to us, the most important time was when you were attending to him. If you had not had the doctor save his life, the bearded man would have died without having made peace with you. So he was the most important man, and what you did for him was the most important thing for you to do.

King: You’re right. You’re right. I didn’t know anything about that at that time.

Hermit: Yes, none of us knows what the future has in store for us.

King: You speak words of wisdom, old man.

Hermit: Remember that there is only one time that is important: that time is now. Seeing that the present is the only time you are granted that you have control over, it is the most important time. The most important person is the one you are with, for you will never know whether you will ever have dealings with anyone else.

King: (Looking into the eyes of the hermit) Oh, I should have been wiser to realize this. I am grateful for the answers you have given to me. I have now found all three answers!

 

Act 4, Scene 2

 

King: (Excited) Bodyguard, bodyguard!

Bodyguard: (Running out of the woods) Yes, Your Majesty.

King: Thanks to this man, I have all the answers to the three questions. Call my men from the palace and have them grant him anything that he wishes for.

Bodyguard: (Lowering his head) Yes, Your Majesty.

 

With his questions fully answered, the king makes up his mind to live by the hermit’s great teachings.

Hannah is a college student who likes to hang out with her friends. She woke up late this morning, so she took a cab to get to class on time. The cab driver used a GPS navigation system to find the shortest route to her school. For lunch, Hannah took her friends to one of the places she found through an online map of good restaurants. After her afternoon classes, she learned how she could get to the city library through an online map service. On her way to the library, a group of foreign tourists asked for directions to a famous park. Hannah used the subway map to give them directions. When she got home in the evening, she turned on her computer and examined several tourist information maps on the Internet for a family trip.

 

There is no denying the fact that maps are more than just pieces of paper with geographical information on them. They are a big part of people’s daily lives. They are used for simple tasks like finding a good restaurant in the neighborhood, as well as for business, security, and medical and academic purposes. Ever since the development of maps, people have been using them to exchange information, describe imaginary worlds, control their land, distribute their ideas, and pass their thoughts on to future generations. Let’s take a look at the history of maps to see how they have been developed and used.

The earliest surviving map of the world is preserved on a clay tablet made in ancient Babylonia in about 6th century B.C. It represents the earth as a flat circle with oceans and mythical islands around it. The European maps made during the Middle Ages were heavily influenced by religious views. For example, a map of the world created in the 6th century shows that the world is flat, and the heavens are shaped like a box with a curved lid. All of these early maps were, of course, drawn and illustrated by hand.

 

The invention of printing made maps much more widely available in the 15th century. Map-making skills advanced during the Age of Exploration in the 15th and 16th centuries. Coast lines, islands, rivers, and harbors were described on maps. Compass lines and other navigation aids were included, and new map projections were devised. People at the time had the belief that such maps had great value for military and economic purposes and often treated them as national or commercial secrets. Whole-world maps that resemble those of today began to appear in the early 16th century, following voyages by Columbus and others to the New World.

Maps became increasingly accurate and factual during the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries with the application of scientific methods. First introduced in 1500, the bird’s-eye view, or a view from a great height, became widely used in the 17th and 18th centuries. Shading and contour lines were used to show geographical features in more detail. The widespread use of air photos following World War I brought about a great leap in map-making skills. This technology revealed even the most remote places to the rest of the world. Modern map-making skills are based on a combination of ground observation and remote sensing.

 

The advancement of science and increased exchanges among people and countries have led to the development of more advanced technologies for making maps. No other technology has been as revolutionary as the geographic information system (GIS), which emerged in the 1970s and 1980s. This system, which is composed of computer hardware, software, and digital information, makes it possible for people to create searches, analyze spatial information, and edit map information on their own. It is used nowadays for maps, navigation systems, transportation information, analysis of business zones, and other purposes.

 

Sinjeungdonggukyeojiseungram

The map-making business in Korea began in full scale in the 15th century. While many books from that era contained detailed maps, no other geography book was as comprehensive as Sinjeungdonggukyeojiseungram. Published in 1530, the 55-volume book contains very detailed maps of the country such as Paldochongdo. There is no denying the fact that Ulleungdo and Dokdo are described as a part of Korea’s territory.

People have long been developing maps to graphically describe the place where we live. Scientists have been using the old ideas of maps for more creative functions to revolutionize the way we live. These days, people rely heavily on maps for business activities, national defense, the exploration of the human body, academic research, and the prediction of geographical changes. It won’t be long before many companies have their products delivered to customers with the help of drones and robots equipped with GPS navigation systems. In the future, more advanced technology will be used for making maps. There is a great possibility that future maps will contain information about everything in physical space, including indoor areas. So you may get directions not only to a shopping center, but also to the inside of the stores. What is more, you might even be able to walk into an augmented reality map to go shopping. Did you jaywalk on the way to school today? All of these are related to civic life. Responsible citizens form a safer, cleaner community where members contribute to one another’s happiness and comfort. The three examples below show how a responsible citizen should act.

 

• Civic awareness begins when people follow simple rules such as traffic regulations. However, many ambulance drivers complain of selfish drivers and careless pedestrians.

 

“Please move over. This is an emergency!”

Even though an ambulance driver shouted this to the cars nearby and the siren was ringing, only some cars were slowly changing their lanes. According to traffic regulations, drivers must make way for emergency vehicles.

Pedestrians also caused difficulties. Several pedestrians who crossed the street at a red light blocked the way, delaying the ambulance’s arrival. When the ambulance finally arrived at the destination, the driver said, “It is very fortunate that we made it in time! But the people who didn’t make way for us should be ashamed of themselves for having broken traffic laws.”

• Responsible citizens also show good manners. When they are in public places, they keep order and clean up after themselves.

 

Last Saturday, thousands of people flocked to a fireworks festival. Even though the fireworks were beautiful, some people’s misbehavior made it hard to fully enjoy the beauty of the fireworks. Most people observed the law. However, some people pushed one another, hurting others. The police reported that more than a hundred people had been hurt and fourteen of them had been taken to hospital that day. Furthermore, volunteer workers had a very hard time cleaning up the area as it was full of garbage. “I wish people cared more about others than just about themselves,” said a volunteer worker.

• Last, but not least, good citizens do not neglect but help their neighbors in need.

 

On February 14th at 6:20 a.m., the 119 emergency center received an urgent call. “There is a fire in the building! And there are people inside!” When the firefighters and the 119 rescue team arrived at the scene, the firefighters were not faced with the usual parking problem. The neighbors had already moved their cars to make space for the fire engine. When the rescue team arrived on the fifteenth floor, they saw some neighbors trying to put out the fire with fire extinguishers. With the neighbors’ help, the 119 team rescued the family who had been trapped inside. The neighbor who called 119 said, “I was so relieved to see them safe.” The head officer of the emergency center said, “The neighbors’ help and our team’s quick response kept the fire from turning into a bigger disaster. We’d like to thank the neighbors for having helped the rescue.”

These three examples show simple ways to become a responsible citizen. Observing simple regulations, showing good manners in public, and helping neighbors in need can prevent a lot of tragic accidents. If you were asked to name one successful creative industry in Korea, what would you choose? It would be a hard question because there are so many. In fact, Korea’s creative industries are reported to have been internationally successful for more than a decade. Nowadays, the economic impact of the “Korean Wave” is increasing by using new technology and good strategies. In particular, K-pop is gaining large profits using advanced technologies. A new type of concert, a combination of K-pop and hologram technology, is quite profitable. In this concert the audience feels as if the singer were actually on stage. Attracted to its uniqueness, more and more K-pop fans flock to hologram concert halls. Marketing strategies are another key to the success of the Korean Wave. In the character industry, some characters are first introduced in an animated series before they are made into toys, theme parks, and other products. This way, the characters can expand into other fields once they prove to be popular. Many companies also use a marketing strategy called product placement for indirect advertising on TV shows. These companies take advantage of the fact that Korean Wave fans abroad pay close attention to what products Korean celebrities use on TV shows and try to purchase the same items as they do.

Music Drawn on the Canvas

Music has played a key role in the creation of some artwork. The influence of music on the visual arts can be best seen with the expressionist painter Wassily Kandinsky. Kandinsky studied law and economics and was successful in his law career. However, in his early 30's, he had an unusual visual experience while looking at Monet's Haystacks. He also was influenced by the melody of Wagner's Lohengrin. "I saw all my colors before my eyes," he said. He felt as if wild and powerful lines appeared in front of him. As a result, he gave up his law career to study painting. For Kandinsky, music and color were closely tied together. In his paintings, for example, yellow is linked with the sound of the trumpet and blue with that of the cello. In addition, certain shapes in his paintings were associated with particular feelings. The triangle represents aggressive feelings and the square calm moods. Each time he stroked the canvas with his brush, he might have intended to turn a series of musical notes into visual forms.

Melodies Reflecting Colors and Shapes

Musicians have also found inspiration from painters and their works of art. Modest Mussorgsky was a composer who is famous for his descriptions of colors in his music. One of his most frequently performed piano works, Pictures at an Exhibition, was composed in his efforts to capture what he felt about the paintings of an artist friend named Viktor Hartmann, who died at the early age of 39. After visiting a memorial exhibition of Hartmann's works, Mussorgsky composed a piano suite in 10 movements to describe each of Hartmann's paintings displayed at the exhibition. Anyone who listens to the movements can associate the melodies with what they see in Hartmann's paintings. While Mussorgsky was writing the melodies, he must have wanted to translate the stories in the paintings into his musical language.

Words Living in Melodies and Images

A novel or a play often inspires musicians and painters. For example, Felix Mendelssohn was inspired after reading Shakespeare's play, A Midsummer Night's Dream, at the age of 17 and began to compose a piece of music to capture the magic and fantasy in Shakespeare's imaginary world. It became part of his famous work, A Midsummer Night's Dream. The Wedding March is one of the best known pieces from the suite. Marc Chagall, known for his use of dreamy colors, was also moved by the play and drew a painting with the same title, Midsummer Night's Dream. The figures in the painting recreate the dreamlike atmosphere of the play. Although Chagall and Mendelssohn lived in different times, they both translated Shakespeare's words and sentences into their own artistic languages. The English word "inspire" originally meant "to breathe in." Air breathed in has to be breathed out in one way or another. Kandinsky, Mussorgsky, Mendelssohn, and Chagall were great breathers because they turned their intakes into artwork that stimulates us in novel ways. Maybe, they knew we would interpret their works accordingly, noticing the melodies, colors, shapes, and the words influencing each other.

A flash mob is a large group of people who suddenly assemble in a public place, perform an unusual act, then quickly disappear. Teenagers of São Paulo, Brazil love to hang out in a safer environment than their home streets. Thousands of text messages invite teenagers to a shopping mall, where they enjoy themselves, singing and dancing together.

Street installations refer to various objects set in public spaces. They are part of the streets people walk along every day. Visit Soho, London, for example, where a telephone booth lies on the street, broken in half. An artist named Banksy built it as a warning against the collapse of human interaction in the age of information.

 

Buskers in Seoul, Korea

Busking is defined as singing, playing a musical instrument, or performing other forms of art in public spaces, sometimes for money. Playing on many street corners near subway stations in Seoul, buskers attract visitors from around the world. Termites are simple creatures, but when they work together, they can build incredible natural structures. Some termite mounds can reach 7 meters in height. They even go 3 meters underground. There is another amazing fact about termite mounds: even though the temperature outside can vary from 40 degrees Celsius during the day to 1 degree Celsius at night, it is always about 30 degrees Celsius inside. Termite mounds are built in a way that hot air rises out and cool air comes in through the bottom. Inspired by termite mounds, Mike Pearce, an African architect, constructed a building in Zimbabwe and another in Australia using the same passive cooling techniques. These buildings were 10% cheaper to build because less money was spent on air moving equipment, and this design reduced cooling energy costs by 35%. Now that's a cool idea!

If you look at an airplane's wings, you can sometimes see that the tips are turned upwards. These are called "winglets" and they may look neat, but they have measurable benefits. When engineers studied birds, they observed that birds' wings have tips that turned up in flight. They found that the tips smooth the flow of air, which helps them conserve energy when flying. The engineers thought that if it worked for birds, why not for airplanes? The end result is that the airplane winglets help keep planes smaller, saving about 10% in fuel costs. This is beneficial not just for the environment but for passengers' wallets, too.

Sea urchins may be eaten in some parts of the world, but they can also damage parts of the sea environment with their bony mouths. A sea urchin mouth looks a lot like a five-fingered claw you might see while trying to pick up prizes at the arcade. This design is surprisingly efficient at grabbing and grinding. The efficiency of this natural design is now being tested for incorporation into missions in space. When small robots are sent to another planet to collect soil samples, the standard method is to use something inefficient like a small shovel. By copying the design of a sea urchin mouth, scientists believe it will be easier to collect samples. Amazingly, a design developed naturally in the deep sea may soon be seen in deep space.

Cars, trains, and planes make travel very easy. Unfortunately, when many people travel, pollution and wasted time have measurable side effects. What if a traffic network were more efficient? A seemingly unintelligent slime mold may hold some answers and more.

Slime molds are not quite an animal or a plant. They feed on dead plant material, so they can be found on grass, on trees, and even in air conditioners! Slime molds find food by sending out "arms" that reach out like a web. When an arm finds food, it grows to transport the food, and other arms that do not find food become smaller, saving energy. If this process goes on, inefficient paths are eliminated and efficient paths are made stronger. By nature, slime molds are able to find the best way to join two or more areas together.

In an experiment, scientists put a slime mold where Tokyo would be on a map of Japan. They put food where major cities were located on the map. After a few days, the slime mold created a design similar to the actual rail system around Tokyo. If it works for rail networks, could it work for other networks, too?

Researchers are now looking into whether slime molds can help create better communication networks. During natural disasters, people try to contact friends and family, so cell phone use increases a lot. A smarter and more efficient network may keep service up, so loved ones can stay in touch. One day, the simple slime mold may become a designer for other networks of the future.

Stores are full of attractive products. Advertisements cover cars and buildings, TV commercials shout slogans, and pop-up promotions on the Internet can be annoying. Since we can't have everything we want, we have to make the resources that we have go as far as possible. Imagine that you go to a shopping mall to buy a pair of jeans. Let's take a look at some of the things that may affect your decisions while you are there.

 

"Hey, these jeans are on sale!"

Have you ever wondered why retail stores put items on sale? Sales reduce inventory size, making room for the store to buy more stuff to sell, and they attract customers. If the jeans were originally $100 but are now on sale for $80, the lower price would lead more customers to consider buying the jeans and spending another $20 on a T-shirt, too. The bottom line is that sales attract customers that might not have made purchases at the regular price, and they motivate customers to spend because their money can now buy more.

Jeans are jeans, right? Well, no! There are ordinary jeans and there are designer jeans. As the TV ads prove, beautiful people wear Brand X, don't they? And you feel you'll be more beautiful if you wear it, too. This is the power of association. When advertisers associate appealing images with certain products, consumers may buy the products to associate themselves with those images. You're still the same you, but you feel better about yourself because you are wearing Brand X's new jeans. Is this worth paying 25%, 50%, or even 100% more? Well, that's up to each individual to decide on his or her own.

Have you ever been offered to buy something that you had not planned on buying? A sales clerk may make suggestions to you about what else to buy in addition to your originally planned purchase. This is called up-selling and it's designed to be not only helpful for you, but also for the store's bottom line. Have you also noticed that shoes, hats, and socks are displayed together next to one another? They are mostly inexpensive items strategically placed there. Since you've already decided to buy a pair of jeans, why not buy a pair of sneakers too? No one can tell you that you shouldn't buy something that really suits you, but remember that the arrangement of items in a store is not random. Product placement seems to have been designed to give subtle suggestions to consumers while they shop.

Why are you influenced by these marketing strategies? What's going on in your head? Well, when your brain is loaded with too many decisions to make, it may go on "autopilot." Instead of deliberating, you choose the easy way and make your decisions automatically. For example, many people may simply assume that buying an item on sale will save them money, or that something with a higher price tag is better in quality. Furthermore, if a cashier recommends something, you may feel as if you "needed" it all along.

If there are so many choices and marketing strategies out there, how can you become a smart consumer? There isn't a "right" answer for everyone because we have different tastes and different values, but the first step is to be aware of your "autopilot" mode. To prevent this, ask yourself these questions before you make any purchase: Do I really need the product or do I simply want it? Would my money be better spent on something else? In the jungle of information, you may feel overwhelmed. Don't worry, though; being a smart consumer is not something that comes naturally. I found the most interesting app today! It's an app that connects the blind with sighted helpers through a video call. I installed the app, set the language to English, and waited.

 

《How It Works》

Having dinner with my family, I heard my phone ring. I realized it was the app I had installed. I answered the phone with butterflies in my stomach. On my phone, I could see a man holding a bottle of milk. Could you read the expiration date on this bottle for me? He brought the camera close to the bottle. I could see the date ― March 5. I said, "That's way too old. It's three weeks past the expiration date." He said, "No wonder it smelled funny. Off to the trash it goes. Thank you so much." I replied, "You're welcome. Have a nice day." He said smiling, "Thanks to you, my day is brighter already." Hanging up, I realized the joy of helping others. I could use the camera on my mobile phone not only to take pictures of myself but also to help people. How fascinating! I wonder if there are other ways I can help others through my mobile phone.

As you grow older, you will discover that you have two hands, one for helping yourself, the other for helping others. - Audrey Hepburn

In the school volunteer club today, we made natural soap. We had so much fun making beautifully colored soap with oil, water, and other ingredients. I made yellow soap using lemons and some students used chocolate for brown soap. But what does making soap have to do with volunteering? I learned the answer from my teacher, Ms. Kim. Washing your hands with soap is one of the most effective and inexpensive ways to prevent the spread of diseases. In fact, in West and Central Africa alone, the simple practice of washing hands with soap could save the lives of about half a million children each year. Yet, despite the health benefits, soap is very hard to come by in some regions since a bar of soap could cost more than a day's wages!

How can we deliver the soap we made to the people that need it? We can take the soap to local community centers that send it to countries that need soap. This way, we can get people to wash their hands at important times such as before eating or after using the bathroom. (Wait! Did I wash my hands after using the bathroom today?) I hope our soap can help people in poor countries wash their hands, and in turn, improve their health.
