1번 지문

Good morning, everyone. Welcome to the Center for Environmental Management. I am Kim Jisu, head instructor at the center. Today, I'm going to introduce an interesting way of protecting the environment.

Look at this picture. Have you ever seen these arrow symbols? You've probably seen the one on the left on products or recycling bins. Yes, it means "recycle." But what about the symbol where the top arrow points upward? What does it mean? This is what I'm going to talk about today: upcycling. It is a new trend in recycling.

Let me show you some examples. These are pieces of broken dishes. What would you do with them? Would you throw them in the trash? After looking at the next picture, you may change your mind.

One of the broken pieces has been turned into a lovely item. Isn't it beautiful?

What do you think this bag is made of?

You wouldn't believe the fact that this nice bag is made of hundreds of ring pulls from empty cans. As you can see, upcycling can turn waste into something new and useful.

The goal of upcycling is the same as that of recycling: to reduce waste by reusing old materials. However, upcycling has a greater emphasis on creative and artistic reuse. Upcycled items can be sold on the market as new products. That's why many people say upcycling turns "trash into treasure."

2번 지문

Now we're going to listen to three people involved in upcycling in different ways.

Tom (manufacturer, Switzerland)

We upcycle old sheets used for covering trucks into tough, eye-catching wallets. Because the used sheets are usually thrown away, we can get them very cheep. But our products, with their unique patterns, are sold at high prices. I think creative upcycling ideas can lead to a profitable business.

Marie (artist, France)

I definitely love upcycling, and it has awesome potential. Unwanted everyday items can be transformed into artwork. Whenever I see old furniture or empty bottles, I am always inspired. The fact that I can give them a whole new life thrills me. I hope that my artwork will open people's eyes to a new kind of beauty.

Yujin (student, Korea)

Last year, I got a new school bag as a gift from my uncle. It was cool-looking and unique. When I heard it was made out of old air bags, I was quite surprised. This got me interested in upcycling and eventually led me to join an upcycling club at school. Through the club, I made some products and learned plenty of upcycling tips. When I gave a paper bead bracelet as a gift to my best friend, she love it!

As you have heard, upcycling is widely acknowledged as a great new way to recycle waste.

Now, it's time to wrap up. Through upcycling, you can create beautiful artwork, make money, and help protect the environment. Even if you can't make upcycled products yourself, you can still help out by using them. Upcycling is much easier than you think.

Let's Make a Paper Bead Bracelet

1. On the paper, mark every 1 cm along one side.

2. On the opposite side, mark the first 0.5 cm. Then continue to mark every 1 cm starting from there.

3. Draw lines by connecting the marks on both sides as shown in the picture.

4. Cut along the lines to get long triangles.

5. Tape the base of the triangle to a straw.

6. Put a glue on the inner side of the triangle and wrap it tightly around the straw.

7. Cut the straw on both ends. Now you have made your first bead. Repeat as needed.

8. Thread the beads together on a piece of stretchy string. Tie both ends of the string together.

더메이킹스(The Makings)가 제작한 2015년 개정 영어 천재(김태영) 1과의 지문입니다.

1번 지문

Mina is a high school student.

Her dream is to become a comics artist, so she joins an after-school art program. However, after a few weeks, she starts skipping classes. Mr. Jo, the art teacher, asks her to come to the art classroom for a talk.

Mr. Jo: Mina, I haven't seen you in class for a while.

Mina: I'm so sorry, sir. I wanted to come, but I couldn't.

Mr. Jo: Is there a problem?

Mina: Not really, but I have other things to do. I'm very busy these days. I wish I had more time.

Mr. Jo: Hmm, maybe the problem is not time but time management.

Mina: What do you mean?

Mr. Jo: Well, actually, I might have some suggestions.

Do you want to hear them?

Mina: I'd love to!

(Mr. Jo walks up to the board and draws a big square. He divides it into four blocks, with a number in each block.)

Mr. Jo: This table categorizes things by urgency and importance. The first block includes things that are urgent and important; the second, important but not urgent; the third, urgent but not important; and last, neither urgent nor important.

Mr. Jo: We usually don't have time for everything, so we must decide what we should stop or reduce. Now, out of the four blocks, which do you think we should give up first?

Mina: Well, maybe block 4. Things that are neither urgent nor important.

Mr. Jo: Right. Can you give me some examples?

Mina: Hmm. I'm not sure.

Mr. Jo: How about surfing the Web or checking social media? You're right. I waste too much time reading the latest gossip and keeping up with my friends' updates.

Mr. Jo: Maybe that's one reason you don't have enough time.

Mina: True. I'll do my best to stop.

Mr. Jo: Great! Now, let's think about block 3―things that are urgent but not important. Do you currently have anything urgent to do?

2번 지문

Mina: Well, as you know, I'm class president. And the classroom decorations should be done by the end of this week. There are lots of things to do: putting labels on lockers, designing a notice board, and buying cleaning materials.

Mr. Jo: Are they all important to you? I mean, do you have to do all of them on your own?

Mina: No. I think I can do them with other classmates_

Mr. Jo: That's right. They're not your sole responsibility. They're relatively less important to you because someone can do them for you. I think you should find classmates who can help you.

Mina: I got it! I should have asked for help from the beginning. I'll try to find classmates who can help me.

Mr. Jo: Excellent! Now, you know how to save time. Where will you spend the extra time you saved?

Mina: Block 1―things that are both urgent and important, like my math homework. It's due tomorrow.

Mr. Jo: Right. That is what you should do before anything else. But what about block 2?

Mina: Hmm, what could go in block 2? What is something important but not urgent?

Mr. Jo: They are things you must do regularly to make your life happier in the long run. They can be things like exercising or career planning. Didn't you say you wanted to be a comics artist in the future?

Mina: Yes, I did. I love drawing cartoons.

Mr. Jo: Okay, then what would you put in block 2?

Mina: Practicing drawing cartoons! Oh, I shouldn't have ever started skipping your classes.

Mr. Jo: People tend to ignore block 2. However, we should find time for those things, even when we're busy. After all, the point is not urgency but importance.

Mina: I'll keep that in mind.

Mr. Jo: Next time you are about to do anything, stop and think about this table. That way, you'll be able to manage your time better.

Mina: Okay, I will.

Thank you, sir!

더메이킹스(The Makings)가 제작한 2015년 개정 영어 천재(이재영) 2과의 지문입니다.

1번 지문

How creative are you? To find out, try to answer a very simple question.

You may think that the question has only one answer and say “4.” If you think outside the box, however, you will realize that there may be more than one answer, like this:

Or like this:

Every day we face a lot of questions. We often try to find one correct answer. However, there can be many different answers. Your answers depend on how you view the questions. Throughout the ages, many people have shaped human history by viewing things differently and thus developing ideas that were unique and useful. One such person was Johannes Gutenberg. In Gutenberg's world, two devices were in common use: the wine press and the coin punch. The first one pressed grapes to make wine, and the other made images on coins. One day, Gutenberg playfully asked himself: “What if I took a bunch of these coin punches and put them under the wine press so that they left images on paper?” In the end, his idea of linking the two devices led to the birth of the modern printing press. This changed history forever.

2번 지문

Gutenberg did not pull his idea out of thin air. He knew about the two devices of his era. He knew how they worked and what they could do. In other words, the roots of the invention were already there. What Gutenberg did was view the two devices in a new way and combine them. In this way, Gutenberg exemplifies what the modern inventor Steve Jobs noted, “Creativity is just connecting things.” Creative thinking was also behind Josephine Cochrane's invention of the modern dishwasher. Before her time, people used to place dishes in a dishwasher, add water, and let scrubbers clean the dishes. There was a problem, though. The scrubbers sometimes badly damaged dishes. Cochrane approached the process of dishwashing differently. She used water itself―water pressure―instead of scrubbers. She thought that high water pressure would do the job of scrubbers and damage the dishes less. Her machine, which pumped hot, soapy water onto dishes, became successful in restaurants and, later, in homes. This example again shows that creativity is the result of thinking differently.

3번 지문

Can we learn to think differently or more creatively like these famous inventors? Luckily, the answer is “yes.” Creative thinking is a skill, and we can improve it. To think more creatively, look for many possible answers, not just one. Ask yourself, “What if...?” or say to yourself, “Imagine ...” Also, do not be afraid of making mistakes. When you do make mistakes, try to learn from them. As Albert Einstein once said, “Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new.” Most importantly, do not forget that creativity is based on knowledge and experience. You need to keep learning new things. That way, you will have the tools for creativity. Who can imagine Shakespeare without his understanding of poetry or Beethoven without his ability to play the piano?

더메이킹스(The Makings)가 제작한 2015년 개정 영어 천재(이재영) 1과의 지문입니다.

1번 지문

I felt nervous and worried because I was about to jump into a completely new world. All my best friends and I had hoped to go to the same high school, but I was the only one who would attend a different one. I was not sure if I could adapt to the new environment. I was on the phone with my friends till late. We talked about what life in high school would be like, and I hardly slept at all. The next morning I got up late and was late for school. The homeroom teacher looked very strict, and all my new classmates looked unfriendly. Even worse, I brought the wrong textbooks and I could not concentrate in class because I had not slept enough. At the end of the day, the homeroom teacher assigned each of us a locker. I got locker number thirteen! I have always hated this number. I thought my high school life would not be easy. When I opened the locker, I found a small notebook with some words written on the cover: “To an Unknown Freshman.” I felt curious and opened the notebook.

2번 지문

Hello. You must be nervous and worried about how to survive your first year of high school, right? That is exactly how I felt on my first day, so I made this as my final term project in English class. I hope it will help you make the most of your high school years.

Top Four Tips

⦁ Get enough sleep. If you do, you can stay fully awake and concentrate better in class.

⦁ Learn to say no. Sometimes things will keep you from focusing on your studies, but you have to learn to say no to them to be a successful student.

⦁ Ask questions. Confucius once said, “The man who asks a question is a fool for a minute, but the man who does not ask is a fool for life.”

⦁ Remain humble and open-minded. When someone gives you advice, listen to it and follow it if it makes sense.

3번 지문

When I started high school, I was caught up in popularity contests. I often spent all my pocket money buying snacks for my classmates. To make friends with the “cool kids,” I often acted as if I were the kind of person they wanted me to be. I was afraid to show my true self. However, it did not take long to learn that all the effort was useless. When I was in the hospital for two weeks, not one of the kids I had tried to impress visited me. To my surprise, the two quiet boys I had barely talked to came and cheered me up. I learned an important lesson: pretending to be someone else does you no good. It is better to be yourself and show your true colors. High school is more than just schoolwork, so find your interests and pursue them by joining school clubs. This offers many benefits. For instance, club activities can relieve stress from schoolwork. They also help you meet people who share the same interests and make it easier to become friends with them. Moreover, some of these new friends may be students from the upper grades who can tell you how to deal with classes and teachers. You could instantly learn tips that took them a year to learn.

4번 지문

Here is a poem that I would like to share with you.

I hope you keep its message in mind: high school happens only once, so try to stay positive and make the most of it. Good luck!

Life is like a piece of art.

Don't be afraid. Follow your heart.

Choose your paint and your brush.

Take your time; avoid the rush.

As I closed the notebook, I felt warm and confident. Thank you, my secret mentor!

5번 지문

Do you know how the word “mentor” has come to refer to a person who gives a younger or less experienced person help and advice? The word originates from Homer's Odyssey. Odysseus, King of Ithaca, had to leave home to fight in the Trojan War. Before he left, he asked an old, wise, trusted friend, Mentor, to take care of his son, Telemachus. While King Odysseus was away, Mentor was a friend and a teacher to Telemachus. Thus, Telemachus grew up to be a fine young man. After the war, King Odysseus tried to return home, but he was forced to wander for years. Athena, Goddess of War, assumed the form of Mentor and appeared to Telemachus. She performed the same role as Mentor. With the help of Athena, Telemachus was able to protect himself in times of difficulty and succeed in finding his father.

2015년 개정 영어 비상(홍민표) 2과 변형 문제

더메이킹스(TheMakings)가 제작한 2015년 개정 영어 비상(홍민표) 2과의 지문입니다.

1번 지문

Wide pants, a striped shirt, a baseball cap: walk down the street and you'll see what's in fashion. Teens, like adults, tend to follow popular trends. That's fine if you're happy with the current style, but you can also create your own style if you're not. Think of Steve Jobs, and a figure of a man wearing a black shirt and blue jeans might pop into your head. Likewise, you can showcase your own charm and individuality with your own unique style, which can become a part of your personal image: a signature style. Here are some tips from three teenage fashion leaders on how to experiment and find your own style.

2번 지문

What is your favorite color? Do you often wear fashion items in that color? As for me, my favorite color is green, but I felt it did not go well with my skin tone, so I used to avoid wearing it. One day, I realized that green has many shades, so I experimented with various shades of green and eventually, I found that a deep green helps me look great. If you like a certain color, you can try various shades like I did, and find one that suits you.

Once you decide on a color, you may discover the color wheel useful to find other colors that go well together. There are three simple ways to use the color wheel: combining analogous colors, choosing complementary colors, and mixing together analogous and complementary colors.

Combining analogous colors is one of the easiest ways of matching colors that will give you an elegant look, for example, a yellow shirt on top of green pants. Choosing complementary colors, like wearing a green skirt with red shoes, creates a bold impression. Choosing a mixture of analogous and complementary colors together, called split complementary colors, can be tricky but results in a calmer look than a combination of complementary colors. Unless your signature style is to wear colors that clash, using the color wheel will help you choose colors that are natural and pleasing to the eye.

The color wheel

1. Analogous colors

Pick one color on the color wheel, skip one, and choose the next one.

2. Complementary colors

Select two colors on opposite sides of the color wheel.

3. Split complementary colors

Choose two analogous colors and the complementary color of the one that is found between them.

3번 지문

I spend a lot of time at school in my uniform, so I don't pay too much attention to what I wear. But there is one thing I often wear outside of school: a black striped shirt. It's very casual with a simple design. I like to wear it under a denim shirt, a leather jacket, or a cardigan. Putting on clothes in layers like this keeps my style fresh even though I don't have a lot of clothes. Mixing and matching clothes is a lot of fun! My point is: If you have a favorite fashion item, and it goes well with your other clothes, you can create a new outfit every single day.

4번 지문

One of the simplest ways to develop your own style is to pay attention to accessories like shoes, hats, glasses, or watches. I spend a lot of time choosing my eye glasses because they can be an important part of my look. When I choose frames, I think of my face shape. Since my face is rather angular, I usually choose round frames. If your face is round, however, you may look better in angular or square frames. Here's another important tip. People tend to make purchasing decisions about frames in terms of material or color, but not many think about their eyebrows. Eyebrows can be so expressive, and covering them with your frames may hide the feelings you express, eventually making you look strict.

BEFORE

The frames cover the eyebrows, making him look strict.

AFTER

The frames do not cover the eyebrows, making him look less strict.

1번 지문

Homin: Jinho invited me to his magic show the other day. He performed wonderful card tricks in front of a huge audience. I am envious of him as he has a plan for his future dream of becoming a professional magician. He watches magic performance shows almost every day and keeps practicing magic tricks until he can perform them perfectly. He has set his mind on studying psychology in college as magic basically deals with people's minds. I wish I had a plan for my future.

Eunseo: Why don't you visit the career development office? You can get some important information from the office. Here's what I received from them.

2번 지문

To make the right career choice, you have to learn about yourself first. Your values, interests, and personality will make some careers more suitable for you and others less appropriate. You can use self-assessment tests, often called career tests, to better understand yourself. Free career tests are available at our office. If the career test results are not clear and don't solve the problem, don't give up. A hobby you really enjoy can be an important part of choosing a career.

5 Steps to Make a Career Choice

STEP 1 Take a career test

STEP 2 Make a list of jobs

STEP 3 Get information about the jobs

STEP 4 Narrow down the list

STEP 5 Learn more about the jobs

Now, you should make a list of occupations based on your self-assessment test results. For each job on your list, you should do some careful research in order to learn about the occupation's educational requirements, outlook, and earnings potential. After researching, you can eliminate careers in which you are no longer interested. At this point you may only have two or three occupations left on your list. You now have to gather more in-depth information from people who have first-hand knowledge. You should identify who they are and conduct interviews with them or ask them for a job-shadowing opportunity.

If you are still not sure, don't worry. Get yourself involved in various activities that you enjoy and do your best today. Your best possible future will unfold when you make today the best it can be.

I am a music lover, so yesterday I job-shadowed my uncle who is a music producer at X-Music. I left home very excited. Not only was I getting the day off of school, but I was also getting a chance to see in person how a music album is made.

The studio was full of the latest equipment, whose size and complexity amazed me. My uncle gave me a short explanation of the equipment. He also explained what needs to be done to create an album, from planning the album to arranging, recording, and editing the music. More than half of what he said sounded like a foreign language to me.

We headed to the recording booth, where two singers were recording music for their rock band. Outside of the booth, the composer and a technician were waiting for us. My uncle sat down in the middle next to the composer when the recording started. It didn't take long, however, until it was stopped by my uncle, then by the composer and the technician. They didn't like this or that about the music and had the singers repeat the same line again and again, all of which sounded perfect to me. When everyone got exhausted, my uncle cheered them up with occasional funny stories. It took a whole day to finish one song!

My day at X-Music helped me realize that love of music is not the only thing required to become a music producer: patience, leadership, and communication skills on top of a good ear for music are important skills to learn, too. I'll have to come up with a plan to develop these skills.

I'm Cathy Carter. I taste chocolate and evaluate its quality, telling good chocolate from bad, faulty chocolate. The evaluation process begins with smelling samples and breaking them to see if they sound crisp. Old or improperly stored chocolate doesn't make a crisp sound. Then comes the actual tasting. I put a small piece into my mouth, press it lightly against the roof of my mouth, and wait until it melts. Then I breathe out through my nose to identify the smell. I always record everything like smells, sounds, tastes, and textures on a computer.

As a chocolate taster, the most important part of my job is keeping my mouth objective. I have to keep my mouth ready and lively so that my evaluation may be as objective as possible. Since I taste an average of thirty samples a day, one should not affect the taste of another. As soon as one is done, I spit it back out and wait for a while. Then I eat a cracker and drink some warm water to get my senses back.

For those who want to become chocolate tasters, I would say love of chocolate is not all it takes to succeed. Keen observation skills and a good understanding of basic concepts of chemistry are required, and a degree in Food Technology is recommended.

She had egg on her face.

Meaning: She was very embarrassed.

Story Behind It: Long ago, some crowds were overly responsive to theatrical performances. When they did not like the performance, they threw things at the performer, sometimes even eggs! Needless to say, having egg on the face was very embarrassing. Not only did the appearance look funny, but it also meant that the performer had given a poor performance. Today, we no longer throw eggs at people on stage, but we still use the expressionegg on one's faceto mean an embarrassing situation.

Even after the Industrial Revolution brought the convenience of factory-produced bread to the dining table, people still had to cut it by hand. Otto Frederick Rohwedder from Iowa invented the first bread slicing machine and put it into service in 1928. 1번 지문

My name is Ruki. I've just entered high school and I'm excited and nervous at the same time. I'm going from being one of the oldest students in middle school to one of the youngest in high school. What will high school life be like? Will there be more work and stress? Will the other students like me? If you're having thoughts like these, you're not alone. Lots of students in their first year feel the same way. But there is no need to worry. Here is some advice from teachers, parents, and students.

2번 지문

Set your Own Goals

Mr. Thompson, Principal

Welcome to your new school! It seems like just yesterday that I was a high school student. How time flies! One of the best things that I did during high school was setting my own goals. Setting your own goals can be as simple as memorizing one English word a day, taking the stairs instead of the elevator once a week, or reading one book a month. When setting your goals, remember that you are not competing with anyone. The goals you set should be just for you. Go at your own pace and you'll be sure to have a happy and successful high school life.

3번 지문

Try New things

Ms. Daniels, Language Arts Teacher

Are you looking for something exciting to do at your new school? Then look no further! There are many great clubs and activities waiting for you. Getting involved in them will give you a great opportunity to learn new things, meet new people, and find what you're really passionate about. For many students, a fear of failure is what stops them from trying new things. But there is no use worrying about failing. If you don't give it a try, how can you succeed? Don't let your fears keep you from getting the most out of your high school years. Just go for it!

4번 지문

Team up

Cindy Bryant, School Orchestra Conductor

In today's society, we have to learn to live in harmony with others. Whether it's a class project or a sports activity, you will have many chances to work together with your classmates toward a common goal. Working in groups is never easy, but it can yield results beyond your wildest imagination. Recognize one another's strengths and assign appropriate roles according to them. Group work will teach you time and resource management, and communication skills. Plus, it will give you an opportunity to really get to know your peers.
