1번 지문

I was waiting outside the classroom. I was feeling sick, and I always felt this way during exam week. Today I had two exams, and unfortunately, physics was first. I hated physics because I could never get all those abstract theories straight in my head. But this was the last day of exams! I could see the light at the end of the tunnel. I took a deep breath and looked around. I saw Emma at the front of the line. She did not have a problem with physics. In fact, she did not have a problem with anything! She looked back at me and then looked away quickly. I thought she looked guilty. She was avoiding eye contact.

“Hi, Sue, now it's your favorite subject,” said Lisa, teasing me as she approached. Emma looked back again.

“Does she have a problem?” Lisa said to me. “I thought you were friends.”

“Yes, so did I,” I said. “But she has been avoiding me for two weeks now. She promised to help me prepare for the physics exam, but she ignored all my calls and texts. It was no use calling her at home, either. Her mom just told me she was busy. She doesn't remember who her friends are!” I said with anger.

Mr. Reed was addressing the class, and the other students filed into the room. I gave Lisa a worried look and followed them inside.

2번 지문

I could not answer the last two questions. They were beyond me. Frustrated, I looked up and saw Emma sitting in the front row. To my astonishment, she had her smartphone under the table and was stealing quick glances at it. I did not know what to think! Was that how Emma always got good grades? I felt really angry at her but did not know what to do. I thought about telling the teacher but could not bring myself to do it. “What would everyone else think of me?” I thought. “It's not fair. I've never cheated, and I ended up failing lots of exams.” With a sigh, I told myself, “Better to be a failure than a cheat.” Emma had put her smartphone away when I looked up again. She looked back at me and smiled awkwardly.

“Stop writing and put your pens down,” said Mr. Reed. He started to collect the exam papers.

“Oh, no! I didn't finish all of the questions. I'm going to fail again!”

I wanted to talk to Emma at lunchtime, but she was nowhere to be seen in the school cafeteria. The next exam was history, my favorite subject, but I did not feel good about it. I went to the school library to go over my notes one last time, but I could not concentrate on them. I still felt really conflicted about Emma. I considered reporting her to a teacher, but I just could not do it. I said to myself, “Everyone would hate me if I did that. It's not fair! Emma has been getting good grades by cheating all the time. How silly I am! I thought we were friends!”

I was sitting behind Emma again at the history exam that afternoon. This time, she did not take out her smartphone. Maybe she did not need to cheat at history. I was feeling awful again, but I had no problem with the exam. I was asking myself, “Should I tell Mr. Reed once the exam is finished? But what would happen to Emma and what about for me? What about our friendship? Wait, have we ever truly been friends?” I was filled with total confusion.

3번 지문

I was on the last question when I saw that Emma had her smartphone under the table. She was looking at it and did not hear Mr. Pendanski walking quietly up to her table. He said nothing. Emma looked up, surprised. He picked up her exam paper and pointed to the door. It was no use trying to hold back the tears. She could not help crying. Then she made her way to the door. As everyone watched her, I felt all my frustration turn to pity.

As I was leaving school, I heard someone come up behind me. It was Emma.

“Sue, wait!” she said. “I want to talk to you.”

Her face was pale, and her eyes were red.

“Do you think I'm a cheat, too?” she said to me. I did not know how to answer her.

“Listen. I'm really sorry I didn't answer your calls. Actually, I'm having a tough time because my dad had a heart attack two weeks ago. He is in the hospital, and I was very worried since he had a big operation today. I know it was foolish, but during the exam I was reading texts from my mom to see how things were going. Just then, Mr. Pendanski caught me and thought I was cheating. He believes me now and gave me a second chance. I'm sorry I wasn't frank with you. I know you're a good friend. Will you forgive me?”

1번 지문

On October 13, 2010, thirty three Chilean miners who had been buried inside the San José mine for 69 days were finally rescued. It was a triumph of engineering and a victory of faith. The miners locked in below did not give up in the dark, nor did their families above ground surrender to despair.

On August 5, 2010, at around lunch break, miners digging for copper and gold started to feel vibrations in the earth. Almost immediately after the vibrations began, they heard a sudden huge explosion, and the whole mine filled up with dust and rock. A massive piece of the nearby mountain had broken off, burying almost all the layers of the mine.

For seventeen days after the initial collapse, there was no word on their fate. As the days passed, Chileans grew increasingly uncertain that any of the miners had survived. A small exploratory hole was drilled on August 22, and the camera captured a message that said, "We are still alive." It was the first sign of hope. Soon, a video camera was sent down 700 meters deep and captured the first images of the miners, all clearly in good health. The discovery sparked joyful celebrations nationwide, and rescue efforts gave a light of hope that the miners could be saved.

2번 지문

The miners were lucky to have an air tunnel that allowed enough fresh air to reach them. They also had broken trucks from which they could charge the batteries of their head lamps. In addition, they were able to drink water from storage tanks nearby. Until the tunnel to deliver food and medicine was operational, food was the most critical issue in the shelter. They only had enough food for two days. For eighteen days, each person had to live on two spoonfuls of tuna, a mouthful of milk, bits of crackers, and a bite of canned fruit every other day. Another factor which bothered the miners severely was the high heat and humidity of the shelter. Each miner had lost an average of 8 kilograms by the time they were rescued.

3번 지문

The miners united as a group soon after the collapse. They organized themselves into a society where each person had one vote. They all knew that if their social structure broke down, their problems would become more serious and did what they could do best. For example, José Henríquez, a religious man, tried to keep morale up, and Yonni Barrios, who had had some medical training, helped other miners with their health problems.

On October 9, a rescue hole was finally drilled through to the miners in their shelter. It created a tunnel large enough to lift them one by one. For this purpose, a specially designed capsule was built. More than 1,400 news reporters from all over the world, together with the family members of the miners, gathered to watch the rescue process.

4번 지문

On October 12, the first rescue worker was sent downward to the miners, who greeted him with nervous relief. Soon, the first trapped miner was raised to the surface. One by one, the miners were brought up in the capsule to see the sunlight. Upon leaving the capsule, each miner was enthusiastically greeted, but they could not see their families right away. They had been trapped for so long that their first priority was to get medical attention.

Luis Urzúa, who had taken a major role as a democratic leader while underground, was the last one to come up to the surface on October 13. "The 69 days during which we tried so hard were not useless. We wanted to live for our families, and that was the greatest thing," Urzúa said to the Chilean people after his rescue. Then, the rescuers and the rescued began singing the Chilean national anthem with the thousands of joyous people who came to support the operation, celebrating the heroics and the humanity of all those involved.

Hi everyone, I’d like to share with you one of my most memorable trips, which was a trip to the city of Granada, a city in the southern part of Spain. Granada is where a whole city was influenced by Arabic culture because of wars and interactions between Spanish and Arabic people a long time ago. I decided to visit the Alhambra palace, which is one of the greatest architectural wonders of Spain. People say this palace was left undamaged during wars because the beauty of the palace was astonishing. In front of the palace, there was a beautiful garden called Generalife. I was totally amazed by the incredible scenery. The fountains were running, and the pools reflected the beautiful flowers and trees in the garden. Later I found out that water meant life and richness to Arabic people in the Middle Ages. Their emphasis on water is expressed in the many water tunnels and fountains in the palace. Next to the garden were the Nasrid Palaces, which I thought were the most beautiful palaces I had ever seen. The rooms are delicately decorated with colorful works of art, wooden ceilings, and various patterns. After I finished the tour, I could understand why the palace wasn’t destroyed. In Spain, it is an absolute must to visit the Alhambra palace! I hope you will have a chance to go there.

Chris: I’m planning to visit South America this summer vacation. Since you’ve been there, where do you think I should go in South America?

Grace: There are many places to see, but I recommend Iguazu Falls. They were why I decided to go to Brazil. I can’t describe their beauty in words. You have to see them in person.

Chris: I’ve heard of Iguazu Falls. Why do you think they are famous?

Grace: It’s because they are the tallest and largest falls in the world.

Chris: Oh, I see. So, where exactly are they located?

Grace: They are located on the border between Argentina and Brazil. If you’re on the Brazilian side, you can take a helicopter or a boat to look around the falls.

Chris: What were you most impressed with?

Grace: Definitely the Devil’s Throat. It was as big and fantastic as the name sounds. The sight of large waterfalls and gleaming rainbows was incredible. Once you see this area, you will be totally amazed by its beauty.

Chris: I can’t wait to go there. Where else did you go?

Grace: Since I am a huge fan of football, São Paulo was a must-visit city. It was like the entire city went on vacation during big matches. There is even a football museum in São Paulo. This shows Brazilians’ great passion for football.

Chris: A football museum? That’s awesome! No wonder so many internationally famous football legends, like Pele, Ronaldo, and Ronaldinho, are Brazilians.

Grace: I know. This museum exhibits interesting things like some of the footballs used in the World Cup matches, pictures, and video of historical football matches. There’s even a whole room which is filled with the history of Brazilian football.

Chris: It sounds like Brazil is the perfect place to absorb the beauty of nature and the passion of football fans. I’m already excited!

Grace: Yes, Brazil is a great place. I hope you enjoy yourself there.

My family’s trip across Australia is going well. The land is very big, so we have experienced four seasons in just a week! This week, we felt very cold on snowy Blue Mountain, and I enjoyed a nice warm walk along the Sunshine Coast. And now we are sweating in Kakadu National Park, which is located in the north area of Australia. Kakadu National Park is a home to thousands of animals. We spent two days in the park. On the first day of our trip, we took a little cruise. It was a cruise on Yellow Water, which has a variety of wild animals, dramatic scenery, and ever-changing landscapes. We spotted more than twenty different species of birds and wild crocodiles in the river. Until this trip, I had only seen crocodiles in the zoo, so the sight of wild crocodiles made my jaw drop. The second day at Kakadu National Park was all about exploring Aboriginal rock art. The paintings of animals provide a fascinating record of Aboriginal life over thousands of years. Our guide told us that some of the oldest rock arts might be as much as 40,000 years old. We were impressed by the well preserved rock paintings. Also, some Aboriginals are still living in Kakadu and have kept their cultural traditions. After the trip, I learned to appreciate the beauty of nature and old traditions. Our next destination is Canberra, the capital city of Australia. I’ll keep you posted about my trip.

Super Storms Claim More than One Million Lives

Since the latest super storm hit Southeast Asia, the total number of deaths and injuries has now exceeded one million. At 3 p.m. on March 30th, 2025, an 18-hour storm severely damaged the region. On April 2nd, the number of deaths and injured individuals stood at 514,000, with over 17,000 missing, and the numbers are expected to rise. One 65-year-old man who lost his house said, “I’ve never seen such strong winds in my whole life. I’ve lost everything.” The storm left many people homeless. A climate scientist said this super storm was obviously caused by dramatic changes in the global climate. He added, “A rise in global temperatures has increased the intensity of storms with higher wind speeds.” Unfortunately, researchers predict that super storms will happen more frequently this summer.

Life Issues

Volunteers Respond to the Micro Dust Problem

For years, the micro dust that blows into Korea from China has been a serious problem. A few years ago, despite global efforts to deal with the problem, it seemed the problem was getting worse. But from the year before last, air pollution has greatly decreased thanks to the help of volunteers from neighboring countries, who have planted trees in many parts of China. The effort started ten years ago, and it’s now starting to show significant results. Experts explain that the trees serve as a wall to block the sand and dust from crossing into Korea. At long last, this coming weekend, people of all ages are expected to breathe in the fresh air.

Technology

Making Up for the Water Shortage

Korea, along with many other countries in the world, is still classified as a country with a serious water shortage. However, this is starting to become a thing of the past. The remarkable development of engineering and chemistry inspired Korean researchers, who have tried to solve severe drought problems. In the end, they successfully transformed sea water into fresh water in an environmentally friendly way. They also found a way to reuse water that contains high salt content. This new solution has reduced worries about the effects of this technology on marine life. Since this technology has become widely used, it has become a source of hope for the people who need drinkable water. A sufficient supply of clean water using the technology is now being developed and is expected to help root out diseases that are caused by the world’s lack of clean water.

Focus

Rising Sea Levels Threaten Nations

It’s now official. The Arctic ice has melted away and is now only one-fifth of what it was in 1979. Many climate scientists have said that the Arctic could have a summer entirely free of ice by 2030 due to global warming. So what is causing the temperature to rise? The main cause is carbon dioxide emissions. Greenhouse gases are being trapped within the earth’s atmosphere, which has led to rising temperatures. The rising sea level has resulted in the sinking of the Maldives, which is a famous tourist destination. According to many researchers, by 2100, New York and Shanghai will also sink, and the average global temperature is expected to be about 3.6 degrees higher than now. Some may wonder why we should worry about a three-degree increase in warming. A one-degree global change is highly significant because it takes a vast amount of heat to warm all the earth’s oceans, atmosphere, and land. In the past, just a one- to two-degree drop caused the earth to go through the Little Ice Age. World leaders have realized the seriousness of climate change, so they will meet in Paris next month for a climate forum.

4번 지문

Energy

The Pursuit of More Efficient Alternative Energy Sources

The global ban on fossil fuels gave a boost to alternative energy. A number of companies around the world have built up more effective energy sources that can make up for the shortage of fossil fuels. Thanks to the development of renewable energy resources, they now make up more than half of the country’s entire power, and this rate is set to grow even bigger. Renewable energy resources come from a wide variety of sources including the sun, the wind, and the sea. Using renewable energy produces less air or water pollution and fewer carbon dioxide emissions than using fossil fuels. The rapid development of renewable energy sources will help us meet energy demands without creating much pollution.

The Green Car Market

As the competition in the electric car market has become more intense, many companies have long been struggling to develop long-lasting electric car batteries. At the same time, hydrogen cars with satellite communications have also joined in this competition. They can eliminate polluted air produced by fossil fuel engines. Heating up the green car market fever, the launch of new hydrogen cars is expected to help reduce air pollution and eventually solve the energy crisis.

I was thrilled when my cousin, Suji, invited me to Italy, a country in southern Europe that looks like a boot. She had a few days off from studying music in a conservatory, so we could spend a week together in Rome and Venice. I had never been abroad by myself, and I was a bit worried, but after the long flight for twelve hours, I was pleased to be greeted by my cousin at Leonardo da Vinci International Airport in Rome. Since Italy is seven hours behind Seoul, I was quite exhausted and sleepy when I got there. However, I forced myself to stay awake to begin my trip in earnest.

2번 지문

Rome was like a giant museum to me. We began our sightseeing at the Colosseum. Nowadays, we can only see a part of what was once the greatest structure in the ancient world. It amazed me to think that people could build such a structure without modern construction equipment. The Colosseum has eighty arches through which about fifty thousand people could go in and out in fifteen minutes! As I reached the top of the stairs inside, I looked down and I could almost hear the cheer of the crowd.

Suji and I walked along a path leading away from the Colosseum and heard the sound of falling water. We knew instantly that we were near the famous Trevi Fountain. Legend says that a single coin thrown into the fountain will ensure a return to Rome, a second coin will bring true love, and a third coin marriage! I threw one over my shoulder, wishing a return to Italy someday. I found it interesting that even on the other side of the world, people still wish for simple things like happiness, love, and marriage.

Who in Rome could miss out on a chance to visit Vatican City, the place where the Pope lives? It is known as the smallest state in the world. In fact, it takes only thirty minutes to walk from one border to the other! I was overwhelmed, however, by the collection of sculptures and paintings in the Vatican Museums. The Creation of Adam, one of Michelangelo's masterpieces, on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, still lingers in my mind. Although I knew photographs are not allowed, the masterpiece was so impressive that I almost took one. After looking around, we walked out to see many people lined up in front of a small store where green apple gelato was served. Suji convinced me to wait in line for over twenty minutes saying that it would be worth it. She was right: the gelato was out of this world.

After a couple of more days in Rome, we headed to Venice. The seaside city was a lot more romantic than Rome, but a lot more humid as well. Suji said she had to visit a friend, so she suggested that I explore the city on my own for a few hours. We could meet up at the train station later in the afternoon.

I decided to go to the Rialto Bridge first, so I started walking. Within moments, the winding alleys made my map almost useless. After some wandering, I was lucky enough to meet a group of tourists my age from Britain. They were headed to the Rialto Bridge too! The bridge itself was as elegant as people say it is, but I was more impressed by the beautiful view of the canal from the steps of the bridge. I said goodbye to my British friends and walked to St. Mark's Square, one of the prime attractions of Venice. I had never seen so many pigeons in my life. They were so used to being around people that they would wait until people weren't paying attention and then steal their crackers! But what truly made me stop and stare in wonder were the beautiful buildings surrounding all three sides of the square. Along the buildings were shops selling beautiful glass pieces, gloves, and much more. After looking around for a while, I bought small glasses for my parents.

My trip to Venice would not be complete without a gondola ride along the Grand Canal, which snakes through the city in a large S shape. I was disappointed to find out the fare to ride the Grand Canal by myself was so expensive that I could not afford it. The moment I was turning back, I saw my British tourist friends walking toward the ticket office. We shared the fare and we commented on the unique differences of the buildings along the canal. We had a nice chat, took some great pictures, and exchanged email addresses before we got off the gondola.

My trip to Italy was definitely an experience of a lifetime. I hope my next trip can be to England to visit my British friends. People say that the world is a book, and that those who do not travel read only one of the pages in it. So far, I have read two pages. I hope I have opportunities to read many more pages.

1번 지문

“Going green” seems to be all the rage these days. Stores and companies use phrases like this to promote their businesses as eco-friendly. It makes sense to try to live in a way that does not harm the environment, but is it easy to go green? In your home, for example, do you always unplug your TV when you aren't watching it? Do stores in your neighborhood always keep their doors shut when the heaters or air conditioners are on? Probably not. Some innovators have taken on the challenge of “going green,” and have come up with some brilliant ideas to make “going green” easier and simpler.

Everyone has things that are no longer of any use, and chances are, those things will eventually get thrown away. However, some of the things that get thrown out are still useful to other people. Goedzak is a Dutch way of allowing people to get second-hand things that might otherwise be thrown away. It is a special garbage bag that can be filled with used, but still usable items. Placing the bag outside on the pavement makes whatever is in it available to anyone in the community. Goedzak's bright color attracts attention while the transparent side of the bag reveals its contents. People can help themselves to anything they like. What an idea! These transparent garbage containers have helped many Dutch people go greener by reducing the amount of trash going to landfills.

2번 지문

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, a third of global food production goes into trash bins annually. In Germany alone, around eleven million tons of food are wasted every year. Having been founded to tackle this problem on a local scale, the online platform, “foodsharing.de” allows extra food in your fridge or cupboard to be distributed to neighbors. The basic concept is simple: people sharing food. The only rule is not to pass anything on to others that you wouldn't eat yourself. This project may change the way people think about food: if food is not shared, it is wasted.

Using disposable cups may be convenient, but it is not necessarily eco-friendly. They are a massive source of waste. Every year, people in the U.S. use over 100 billion disposable cups, and Koreans dispose of over 15 billion cups each year. That's what drove a few novel designers to come up with edible coffee cups. A cookie forms the main structure, with a white chocolate layer on the inside and a thin layer of sugar paper on the outside. This structure allows you to drink coffee without finding yourself holding a soaked mess. You can think of it as a treat for coffee! You may have to consume extra sugar, but it will definitely create less waste.

3번 지문

What can you do to go green when you have 500 photocopies to make? Many green strategies focus on using less paper, like printing on both sides. Another green strategy is to use less ink, which is what many people already do. But what if you could take it a step further? That's what Ecofont is. A designer thought that if he could create fonts that have tiny holes in them, he might be able to make more efficient use of the amount of ink used. In fact, Ecofont uses about a fifth less ink than traditional fonts without ruining readability. The brilliance of Ecofont is the different perspective it takes on going green: the use of less ink by the font.

An eco-friendly way of life is not about changing the entire world overnight. It is about becoming aware of your own wasteful ways and then helping others become aware of theirs. After awareness comes the process of adopting slightly different ways of doing some daily tasks. When you do these things, you are keeping your environmental bank account full. When you go one step further and help others do them too, you are an activist and big changes can happen.

4번 지문

Every year thousands upon thousands of tons of electronics, from air conditioners to smartphones, are thrown out. This adds up to huge amounts of waste which has to be managed, especially for smaller countries like Korea. Is it possible that electronics waste is actually a resource? Like a mine in the ground, many people are beginning to think of electronics waste as "urban mines" because of the amount of gold, silver, copper, plastic, and steel that is waiting to be used again.

To manufacture electronics products, resources such as gold, silver, copper, glass, plastic, and steel must be mined, purchased, or produced. As resources become harder to get, urban mines may become a more economical solution. About one ton of rock must be dug up in a mine to get around five grams of gold; however, one ton of mobile phones may contain around 300 grams of gold, in addition to other recoverable materials. The potential value of urban mines increases when resources become expensive and waste is not recycled.

Although electronics waste may be seen from an economic point of view, there is another side to this story: the environmental issue. Recycling electronics waste can lower ecological damage from traditional mines and decrease air pollution from transporting materials over long distances. Moving forward does not always mean making new things; sometimes looking at an old problem from a new perspective is the simplest solution.

1번 지문

I was resting on my couch after a long day. Helping needy people all day is not easy, but it gives me joy. Suddenly, the terrible noise from the apartment above started again. I had heard that some thoughtless, inconsiderate mothers let their children ride bicycles and skateboards inside their homes these days, and I imagined what was going on up there. I picked up the intercom to call the apartment manager again. “May I help you?” he said. His voice seemed impatient. “Is this about the noise upstairs again? Do you want me to tell her to be quiet?” I hung up and waited.

In a moment, my intercom rang, and the apartment manager said, “The woman upstairs says she’s being very careful about the noise, and she says she’s sorry.” He hung up.

2번 지문

Sorry? Wasn't the annoying sound the same as before, and why was she being so inconsiderate? Since I was determined to end the matter once and for all, I grabbed the intercom again and asked him to connect me to Apartment 909.

After many rings, a young woman's voice answered. I spoke strongly, “Listen, I live downstairs―unfortunately right below you―and I've had just about enough of your rudeness. There are do's and don'ts when we live in an apartment, aren't there? The noise from your apartment has pushed me to the point where I'm almost ill.”

“Look,” responded the young woman, “if I had had the ability myself, I'd have been quieter. Can't I just move around normally in my own home? You've gone way too far with this, and I'm becoming nervous since you complain almost every day.” Her voice became desperate. “What do you want me to do?”

I stood up a little straighter, and I held the intercom even more tightly. I made my voice calm and polite. “I want what any reasonable person would want,” I said. “For you to be understanding and considerate. I wish you'd been quieter, that's all.”

3번 지문

I firmly put the phone down. How shameless! I couldn't stop thinking about her rudeness. Yet the wisdom that comes with age told me that the angrier I became, the more I needed to calm myself down and act carefully. Suddenly, I remembered a pair of slippers that I had received as a present but had not used. A present can be a good way to communicate. The slippers could represent my suffering and at the same time serve as a constant reminder to soften the sound of her steps. I'd teach her in this quiet way how to live with others as a considerate neighbor.

I placed the slippers in an almost new gift bag and added a small, used ribbon. Then I walked upstairs and rang the bell. No one answered. I could hear someone inside, so I waited. With her cooperation, I'd have already delivered the gift along with a kind greeting such as, “We're neighbors, but we haven't exchanged hellos yet ....” But now I was being made to wait.

4과 지문

Finally, the noise became louder as it approached the door. The lock turned once halfway, then again completely, and the door slowly opened. A young lady looked up at me from the doorway. She was seated in a big, metal wheelchair. Far from angry, her face looked tired and worn, and I hid the slippers behind me as quickly and naturally as I could.

“Actually, I was just about to replace the wheels. I'd have done it earlier if it hadn't taken so long to order new ones online. Anyway, I'm sorry, and I can't even offer you some tea because my helper isn't here right now.”

My eyes ran away from her face and fell instead on her lap and then her legs resting under a colorful blanket. The noise had ended, and now there was only silence. My slippers felt heavy in the cheap bag as I looked back at her face and tried to find something to say.

One evening my mother prepared dinner for the family after a long, hard day's work. She placed a vegetable dish and burnt bread on the table. I was waiting to see if my father would say something about the burnt bread. To my surprise, my father just enjoyed the bread as usual and asked me how school was.

I do not remember what I told him that night. However, I remember I heard my mother saying sorry to my father for the burnt bread. More importantly, I clearly remember him saying, "Honey, I love burnt bread." Later that night, before I went to bed, I asked my father if he had really liked the burnt bread. He wrapped me in his arms and replied, “Son, your mother put in a long, hard day at work, and she was exhausted. Sometimes we forget that, don't we? Besides, burnt bread never hurts anyone, but harsh words do.” I will never forget what he said.

1번 지문

Jina won first prize in the school singing contest. She chose a popular song from the 1980s to sing in front of all the students. Jina’s best friend, Eunji, recorded the performance on her cell phone. After the contest, Jina showed the video file to her parents. Jina’s father said, “Oh, your grandfather should watch this! This song is one of his favorites.” Jina wanted to send the video file to her grandfather right away, but she realized he didn’t have an email address or a smartphone. She felt sorry about this because she had no choice but to wait until she could visit her grandparents. Here is her story. When I visited my grandfather, he used to tell me about when he was my age. I have heard it hundreds of times, so I already know what he will say after, “When I was your age, ...” One of his least favorite things was any kind of digital device. This time I thought I could change his mind because he really enjoyed watching my singing performance on my phone. I told him, “Grandpa, I really want you to have a smartphone or an email address. If you use it, we can share many things and talk more often.” However, my grandfather kept saying that it would be too difficult to use a smartphone or email. He believed digital devices worsened the generation gap. I wondered why he held on to his negative attitudes toward digital technologies. I found it hard to narrow the gap between us, so I said to my father, “Grandpa simply can’t understand my generation.”

2번 지문

After having dinner at my grandparents’ house, I received a message with two photos from my father. He said, “Jina, what do you think about these two photos?” The first photo was in black and white, and it was taken when my father was very young. In the picture, all the family members were eating some fruit together. As I saw their smiling faces in the picture, I could feel real happiness. On the other hand, the second photo was totally different. My father had taken this photo before we had dinner. I was playing online games on my smartphone, and my brother was talking with his friends using a mobile messaging app while my grandfather was just watching TV. There seemed to be an invisible wall separating us from our grandfather.

3번 지문

I felt sorry for my grandparents as I saw the photos. I began to understand how my grandfather felt, so I asked my father how I could bridge the gap between my grandparents and me. He said, “Jina, I know you’re very good at computers. Why don’t you make a digital family album? Even better, you could add some songs we all love, along with your singing contest video file. Your grandfather will be very pleased to be able to share his life history with you.” I thought digital devices could connect our family and strengthen the family bonds. I suggested the idea to my grandfather, and he accepted it with a big smile. Our digital family album starts with “When my grandfather was my age, ...”

4번 지문

When my grandfather was my age, the Korean War broke out. Things were quite different from the way we live now. He remembers how people suffered from cold, hunger, and poverty even after the war. My grandfather decided to leave his sick mother, two brothers, and three sisters because he was the only one who could earn money. Finally, he moved from his hometown to Seoul to make more money. As a laborer in the 1970s, he worked for a big construction company in Saudi Arabia and Iran for many years. When he thought of his family in Korea, he had to put up with all his difficulties. A love of music runs in the family. Music has been my grandfather’s best friend throughout his life. He often listens to music when he feels sad. He told me he really liked the song that I sang at the singing contest. He also introduced me to a lot of songs I had never heard before. They were really amazing. We chose the first song for the background music of our digital family album. We found it interesting to make our own digital family album together. My grandparents said they felt closer to me and my brother because our family talked about the photos and the old days. I was glad to learn about their past, and they also looked happy to share their stories with me. We have finished making the first two chapters of our digital family album, and we decided to choose some photos of my grandmother for the next chapter. My grandmother has already selected her favorite song for the background music.

Our digital family album will never end!
