비상(홍민표) 6과 변형 문제의 지문입니다.

1번 지문

Annual meat consumption has reached an average of over 40 kilograms per person globally, and the demand is increasing. To meet growing demand, livestock industries have turned to large-scale "manufacturing" of meat in huge "factories." Such a move, however, puts strain on the environment, in particular on the land and water resources of the earth. Every year, over one billion tons of grain are consumed by farm animals. More than two thirds of all agricultural land is used to raise grains and vegetables for livestock while merely eight percent of the agricultural land is used to grow food for direct human consumption. Moreover, about one third of the world's fresh water is used for meat production, which cuts into the supply of water for humans. The bed of the Colorado River in the U.S. is expected to dry up soon; too much water has been drained from the river as neighboring farms need to grow feed for cows. In short, a large portion of our natural resources is used for meat production.

2번 지문

As more people want more meat, it is inevitable that land for livestock be extended to meet the demand. More meat production results in increased water pollution in both rivers and oceans since cows and pigs eat a lot and at the same time produce a lot of manure. Livestock is said to produce 130 times as much manure as humans in the U.S. When not managed properly, the manure and water containing it cause severe harm to the ecosystems of rivers and oceans. When rain comes, manure is washed away with the runoff, polluting nearby soil, streams, and rivers all the way until it reaches the ocean. Once it reaches the ocean, it contributes to the formation of what is known as a "dead zone." Dead zones occur around the world, primarily near areas where heavy farming and industrial activity spill nutrients into the water. Concentrated levels of nutrients in water result in the blooming of algae, which are simple forms of water plants. When too many plants grow in the water, they use up the ocean's oxygen, suffocating other plants and animals. The largest known dead zone occurred in the Gulf of Mexico in 2002, when runoff from the Mississippi River resulted in over 20,000 square kilometers of the Gulf area to become uninhabitable for oceanic life.

3번 지문

The increasing demand for meat and meat products brings trouble not only to the natural resources under our feet but also to those overhead in the atmosphere. Even though carbon dioxide is a major cause of global warming in the air, recent research has shown that methane can have a greater impact. Methane is responsible for about 16 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions. That doesn't seem like much, but experts warn that methane is over 20 times as powerful as carbon dioxide in trapping the sun's heat in the atmosphere. Where does all the methane come from? Much of the methane in the atmosphere is released naturally in damp areas. However, about 15 percent is emitted by the growing number of cows and pigs. Statistics vary about the exact amount of methane emitted by a cow, but it is generally agreed that a single cow releases up to 120 kilograms of methane per year, more than any other domestic animal. That is about 1,000 times the amount of methane emitted by an average person. Methane is produced in a cow's special digestive system. A cow has a stomach with four rooms to break down the food it eats. The food digested in the first two rooms is sent to the mouth to be chewed again, and then sent to the third and the fourth rooms. A cow does this for about eight hours on average every day during which it keeps burping and passing gas, giving off methane into the atmosphere. Imagine the enormous amount of methane emitted from the burping mouths of 1.5 billion cows on six continents. The world's livestock industries are growing at an unprecedented rate due to population growth and rising incomes. The world's population is predicted to reach around nine billion by 2050. Koreans ate an average of 11 kilograms of meat per person in 1980, but the average increased to 51 kilograms in 2014. As people prefer increased animal protein in their meals, our land, rivers, and oceans are bound to suffer with no solution in sight. Maybe it is time we give our diets a second thought.

4번 지문

On one Saturday in 2050, Amy's getting ready to go out for a family lunch to celebrate her 17th birthday. Excitedly, she gets into a self-driving car with her parents and her little brother Josh. "I didn't think we'd have to wait in line," Josh complains. "This place is always busy, but you won't regret waiting," Mom says. The line moves along smoothly, and before long, Amy's family steps through the door of the Old Kitchen. Josh immediately forgets his recent annoyance as he sees restaurant servers carrying plates that smell of delicious food. "Wow, this is nice. We're in a place where we are served by people, not robots. I feel more warmly treated when served by a human," says Amy. "Hello? May I take your orders?" a waiter asks politely. "What's today's special?" asks Mom. "Well, today's special is ant fried rice. It's said to be high in protein and low in fat." "OK, we'll have two specials," says Mom. "Why don't we order some beef dishes as well?" asks Mom. "But Mom, beef is way too expensive, isn't it?" Amy says with concern in her voice. "I know, but today is special. I really miss the good old days when beef was reasonably priced," says Mom. "Why is beef so expensive?" asks Josh with a puzzled look. "Raising cows is costly because global warming has resulted in a lack of natural resources," Dad explains. "I can't imagine the old days when people ate beef as often as we eat insects today. But why complain? I like insect dishes," cheerfully replies Josh. As Mom says, waiting in line to dine at the Old Kitchen pays off.

1번 지문

It was late evening. Into the Orangutan Rescue Center on the island of Borneo rushed a rescue worker holding a tiny bundle in his arms. Inside, with a face as small as a mouse's, was a 3-month-old orangutan. Those who were there that day remember two things about their first meeting with the baby orangutan: her big bright eyes, and her left arm, half of which was missing. "Baby orangutans, who ride on their mothers' stomachs by holding onto their long hair, have incredibly strong grips. They do not let go," said the director of the Orangutan Rescue Center. "The baby's hand was chopped off, probably to separate her from her mother." Rescuers believe that the baby and her mom had been driven out of their forest home when it was destroyed to make way for a palm oil plantation. Hungry and weak, the mother was likely walking in the forest in search of food when she encountered some people working there. Luckily, the baby orangutan was rescued before more harm was done. Rescuers named the baby orangutan "Kesi," meaning "child born in difficult times." That name is fitting for many orangutans living in the wild today. A hundred years ago, about 230,000 orangutans lived on Earth. Today, fewer than 50,000 are left in the wild, living exclusively on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra. These islands happen to be ground zero for one of the world's most controversial and rapidly growing industries: palm oil. The cultivation of palm oil is the biggest threat to orangutans. Although their survival gravely depends on rainforests, people have continuously destroyed rainforests to make room for the production of palm oil. Deforestation has reduced the habitat of the orangutans, which in turn has caused thousands of the animals to die. At this rate, orangutans could become extinct in less than 25 years.

2번 지문

So what exactly is palm oil? You may have never heard of palm oil, but you have almost certainly come into contact with it, probably multiple times every day. Palm oil is a type of vegetable oil that is derived from the palm fruit. It can be found in thousands of consumer goods, from packaged foods to hair products. Cheaper and more efficient to produce than other vegetable oils, palm oil is currently used in half of all packaged products. The consumption of palm oil has rapidly increased in the past two decades. Although the United States and Europe are its top consumers, demand is growing throughout the world. Recently, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) banned trans fat in foods, which will likely increase the consumption of palm oil. Though by no means healthier, palm oil is set to be the "clear alternative" for food producers, experts say. The production of palm oil is the number one cause of forest loss in Indonesia and Malaysia. If this continues, the extinction of orangutans will become a sad reality. The future of Kesi's species is in our hands.

3번 지문

Did you know that orangutans are one of our closest relatives? The name orangutan is derived from the Indonesian words orang meaning "person," and hutan meaning "forest." So orangutan means "person of the forest." They are so intelligent that they make umbrellas out of leaves when it rains. Unfortunately, these smart animals are getting closer to extinction. I recently read an article saying that palm oil plantations are destroying the homes of orangutans. The sad thing is that most people are not familiar with palm oil, even though it is in many products that we use on a daily basis. This might surprise you, but palm oil is used in ice cream, cookies, bread, chocolate, soap, and cleaning agents!

4번 지문

So what can we do to help save the orangutans? Well, you can talk to your friends and family about palm oil and the dangers orangutans are facing. You could also be an active consumer next time you visit the supermarket. Read the labels of products carefully to see if they contain palm oil, and try to avoid them if they do. There is another fun thing you can do to help orangutans: adopt an orangutan! I know it sounds impossible, but there are organizations that match you with a baby orangutan when you donate money. Don't worry! It doesn't cost a fortune to adopt one; you can start by basically donating a few cents per day. Even this small amount will help save the lives of many orangutans. Please help spread the word about the dangers of the palm oil industry and name any products containing palm oil that you know in the comments below. I really hope you will join me in protecting these "people of the forest."

A lot of plastic foam is used to make packaging containers. Unfortunately, the containers are used only for a few weeks to protect your brand-new computer or TV on its journey to your house, and then they end up in landfills. Eben Bayer, an eco-friendly product designer, recognized that plastic foam has a negative impact on the environment. He wanted to remove the need for it. So, after years of experimenting, he created a 100% biodegradable packaging material. The main ingredient of the packaging material is mushrooms. Cheap, useless agricultural waste, like the husks of rice and wheat grain, is also needed to make mushroom packaging. After the waste is cleaned, it is mixed with mycelium, a material that can be found at the root of mushrooms. The mycelium holds the agricultural waste together and then the mixture is put into a mold. With the mixture growing in the mold, the mushroom packaging takes the shape of the mold. After a few days, the mixture is removed from the mold and it is dried to prevent any additional growth of the mycelium. Finally, a 100% biodegradable package is ready for use. Eben Bayer hopes that this mushroom packaging will replace plastic foam. He says, "What I want to guarantee is that in 10,000 years, our descendants, our children's children, will be living happily and in harmony with a healthy Earth."

2번 지문

The consumption of plastic bottled water is on the rise. For example, it was estimated that the USA consumed as much as 36.5 gallons of bottled water per person in 2015. The problem is that most plastic bottles are thrown away and take up space in landfills. What if we could replace those plastic bottles with something more environmentally friendly - edible, even? To solve the problem of plastic bottles, Rodrigo Garcia Gonzalez and his coworkers came up with an innovative idea. They created an edible water container, Ooho. Ooho is a thin gel bag which is made of seaweed. It is biodegradable and safe for human consumption. Once the water inside is consumed, Ooho can be thrown away or eaten. It reportedly only costs two cents to make. In addition, anyone can easily make this water container in their kitchen. Besides, making Ooho has a climate benefit, as it does not cause the CO2 emissions that the bottle manufacturing process does. There are many other creative, eco-friendly ideas, such as chicken feather-based plastic and plastic foam which is made from milk and clay. In addition, other small efforts we make in our daily lives can make a difference. For example, we can use our own personal refillable water bottles instead of buying disposable plastic bottles of water. We can also bring our own reusable bags to the market and say "No" to plastic bags. With all these ideas and efforts combined together, we can reduce the total amount of plastic waste!

교학사(강문구) 4과 변형 문제의 지문입니다.

1번 지문

Host: Hello, Mr. Eli Beer. Welcome. I am very pleased to talk to you.

Eli: Thanks for inviting me. I am really happy to be here.

Host: OK, let me start with the first question. What made you start helping other people?

Eli: When I was six years old, I was walking back from school with my older brother. We were passing by a bus stop. Suddenly a bus blew up in front of our eyes. The bus was on fire, and many people were hurt and killed. It was so horrible. I remembered an old man yelling to us to help him get up. He just needed someone to help him, but we were so scared that we just ran away. From that time on, I decided that I wanted to save lives when I grew up.

Host: According to your lecture, you assembled a group of emergency medical technicians at the age of 17. Later on, you organized United Hatzalah, which means "Rescue" in Hebrew, Am I right?

Eli: Yes, you are right.

2번 지문

Host: Your group is very famous for its motor bikes "ambucycles." What exactly is an ambucycle?

Eli: An ambucycle is an ambulance on two wheels. It's basically a motor bike, but it has everything an ambulance has except for a bed. We have a lot of medical equipment on our bikes. Actually, we don't transfer people. We just stabilize them until an ambulance arrives. We helped to save many lives by doing this.

Host: Sounds interesting! That will definitely help people in an emergency situation. Do you have any special reasons for inventing the ambucycle?

Eli: Yes, in 2011, I volunteered to work in an ambulance in Jerusalem. We helped many people, but whenever someone really needed help, we never got there in time due to heavy traffic. One day, we received a call about a seven-year-old child choking on a hot dog. The traffic was horrible, and we were coming from the other side of town. When we got there, 20 minutes later, we started CPR on the kid. Unfortunately, he died. At that moment, I understood that this child had died for nothing. If we had come 5 minutes earlier, we would have been able to save this child. I said to myself, "There must be a better way." Then, I came up with the idea for an ambucycle.

Host: I heard that you helped Muslims living in east Jerusalem. Will you tell us the story?

3번 지문

Eli: Yes, last year, in a Jewish community, one Muslim named Muhammad called me and told me his story about how his father, who was 55 years old, had a cardiac arrest and collapsed at home. It took over an hour for an ambulance to arrive, and he saw his father die in front of his eyes. He said, "There are many people like my father, please help them." Then, I said to myself, "I am Jewish and I see so much hate between Jews and Muslims, but it's not about saving Jews or saving Muslims. It’s about saving people." So our team went ahead and started saving Muslims too. Then, something special happened. Muslims and Jews who don't usually get along together, but in this kind of situation, hold each other's hand shedding tears of gratitude.

Host: Oh, it's a very touching story. Okay, let me ask about your volunteer organization, United Hatzalah. Your organization is growing very rapidly. Why is it so successful?

Eli: Three things. First, we have thousands of passionate volunteers who will leave everything they do to run and help people they don't even know. The second reason is our technology. Every one of us is equipped with a smartphone and a traffic navigator device. Whenever a call comes in, the closest five volunteers get the call, and they actually get there really quickly without wasting precious time. The third thing is these ambucycles. They never get stuck in traffic. They can even go on a sidewalk. That's why we get there so quickly.

4번 지문

Host: That's good. Jefferson Weekly recently reported that your organization is going global. Where have you expanded?

Eli: Frankly, I, myself, am surprised, too. Last year we started in Panama and in Brazil and I’m starting in India very soon with my friends. Currently we have ambucycles in the Jewish community in New York, and even in Australia and Mexico.

Host: Wow, that’s amazing. Lastly, do you have anything to say to our viewers?

Eli: Last year alone, we treated 207,000 people in Israel. 42,000 of them were in life-threatening situations. When I look around here, I see lots of people who would run an extra mile to save other people. Now, we are looking forward to everyone's participation. It doesn't matter who you are, what religion you believe in, or where you come from. We just need people with enthusiasm and humanity. Together, we could save millions of people. Thank you.

Host: Thank you very much.

Jihu:

Do I have a role model? Yes, I do. I think role models influence our lives in a positive way by giving us dreams, hopes, and lessons. My role model is Roald Dahl. He helped me dream of becoming a children's book author. I have read a lot of his books and loved all of them. Reading his books such as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Matilda, I found myself fascinated by his interesting stories and creative characters. I especially like the messages and lessons in his books. Many of his characters are in unfortunate situations. However, they do their best to break free from their bad situations, and their dreams finally come true. I learned that we should always believe in our abilities and dreams. As a result, I became more confident and hopeful about my future. Like Roald Dahl, I want to be a writer who can have a positive influence on readers, too.

Hyeri:

My role model is Kim Mandeok, a female merchant during the Joseon Dynasty. The reason she's my role model is not because she earned a lot of money. I want to follow her challenging spirit and sharing mind. During her era, there were many restrictions on women's activities. In addition, she lost her parents early in life. However, she overcame all of her difficulties and created her own destiny as a merchant all by herself. That's not all. After making a large fortune, she willingly donated almost all of her wealth to her starving neighbors. I think she was a true example of noblesse oblige. I really respect her way of life. Whatever job I have in the future, I'll try to overcome the obstacles around me rather than complain about them. Above all, I want to be a person like Kim Mandeok who shared what she had with others.

Minjun:

I have role models, too. They are the main characters in the film Cool Runnings. The movie is about Jamaican bobsledders who hoped to win an Olympic medal. However, Jamaica is an island country where it never snows. They were laughed at by others, but that didn't stop them from trying. Every scene where they practiced riding their bobsled was really funny and touching. That may be because their situation seemed very similar to mine. Actually, I'm a cross-country ski athlete. Sometimes I feel frustrated when my colleagues and I don't get attention or support from people. However, when this happens, I motivate myself by thinking about the characters in Cool Runnings. They make me set a clearer goal and keep challenging myself. Their story ended in the film, but my story won't be over until I get an Olympic medal.

Saemi:

Actually, I've never thought about my role model. However, if a role model means someone who is worthy of my respect, then I have that kind of person. Her name is Lee Yura and she is one year older than me. I met her when she was a sophomore mentor at a study mentoring club. When I was a freshman, I didn't have any idea about how to study. However, she always answered my silly questions kindly, waiting for me to understand her explanations completely. In addition, once she taught me something, she made me explain it back to her in my own words. That method really helped me understand difficult concepts better. I became interested in and more confident about studying. I don't think a role model needs to be someone famous or special. Role models are not that far away. Your parents, sisters, brothers, or friends can all be role models!

《A Sunday Painter Chasing His Dream》

A full moon shines brightly in the sky.

A river flows peacefully in the desert.

A gypsy woman, having no worries, falls asleep in the desert.

A lion sniffs at the woman but does not seem to attack her.

What do you think of this painting?

The Sleeping Gypsy is considered a fantastic and mysterious work. The rich and sharp colors of the painting fascinate us and its stillness makes us feel like we are actually there. However, if we study the painting carefully, we can see that it does not make sense. How can the beast not attack its prey? How come a river is in the desert? Jean Cocteau, a French poet and film director, said, "Perhaps she's dreaming of the lion and the river." Indeed, it looks like a painting of a woman who is dreaming. Now you might understand what brings a strange and mysterious atmosphere to this painting. It is the unfamiliar combination of things that exist in two different worlds, reality and fantasy. And that is why many people are attracted to this painting. The Sleeping Gypsy is one of the most representative works of Henri Rousseau (1844–1910). In fact, he was not a recognized artist from the beginning. He led a mostly unremarkable life, working as a Paris customs service officer until his late forties. However, he had a dream of becoming an artist, so he taught himself by painting on Sundays as a hobby.

2번 지문

When Rousseau first showed four paintings at the Salon exhibition in 1886, people did not respond favorably to them. The public and critics laughed at Rousseau's flat, seemingly childish style of portraying human figures. This was because the paintings did not look real. Rousseau's style was markedly different from the contemporary mainstream. One critic even said, "Monsieur Rousseau paints with his feet with a blindfold over his eyes." In spite of such harsh criticism, Rousseau never gave up his style. He continued to draw his paintings and submit them to the Salon. It was around the turn of the 20th century that Rousseau's paintings began to attract some young artists. They were bored with existing painting styles and Rousseau's paintings met their desire for a new trend. Especially, Pablo Picasso admired the strange energy of Rousseau's paintings because they looked unfamiliar and mysterious.

3번 지문

Some of the most well-known of Rousseau's paintings are a series of jungle paintings. Rousseau produced twenty-six jungle paintings in the final six years of his life. In fact, he had never traveled outside of France or seen a jungle. Then how did he create his jungle scenes? It was from illustrated books and botanical gardens that he received inspiration. He frequently visited the Jardin des Plantes (Garden of Plants), a combined zoo and botanical garden in Paris. Whenever he went there, he observed a lot of exotic animals and plants. Rousseau said of his visits, "When I am in these hothouses and see the strange plants from exotic lands, it seems to me that I am entering a dream." In this way, he created his own mysterious jungle paintings where reality and fantasy coexist. Did you enjoy Rousseau's paintings? He was one of the painters who received harsh criticism during their lifetime. However, he never stopped painting and developing his unique style. He chased his dream to become an artist while living as a customs officer and he created many dreamlike works that went beyond custom and tradition. The mix of fantasy and reality in his paintings inspired later artists and, thus, he became known as "The Grandfather of Naive Painting and Surrealism." Why don't you pursue your dream as Rousseau did?

1번 지문

Tai was born as the second son in the Lee family. One day, Mr. Lee, Tai’s father, is told by a monk that the baby is born with a fate to die young. The monk tells him that the only way to fight his fate is to stay away from trumpet creepers – a type of flower with beautiful, vivid orange colors containing poison – and to marry the ugliest woman in town. So Mr. Lee destroys every trumpet creeper tree in his garden and strictly bans planting any more trumpet creeper vines in his garden. As Tai grow older, Mr. Lee looks everywhere to find an ugly girl to wed his son. He finally discovers a good match. It is Yuni, who is said to be very ugly. Yuni’s parents refuse Mr. Lee’ offer, saying she is too unattractive to wed his son. In truth, a monk told Yuni’s parents that she isn’t from this world. She is an angel who is said to have stolen a trumpet creeper tree vine from heaven and run away to the earth with it. He also warned that anyone who stays close to her will get hurt from the flower’s poison. To keep her away from others, Yuni’s parents intentionally spread a rumor about their beautiful daughter that she is very ugly and has bad manners. Mr. Lee, who believes the rumor to be true, persuades Yuni’s parents to marry his son. Yuni’s parents eventually agree, thinking that Yuni can’t live alone for the rest of her life.

2번 지문

One day, Tai goes hunting in the woods. While taking a break, he sees a beautiful lady surrounded by some trumpet creeper flowers and he immediately falls in love with her. For days, Tai could not stop thinking about her and visits the woods again to see her. He can’t find her and so he gives up since he knows his father has already arranged his marriage. He was told that his fiancé had an ugly face and a bad temper, but that she would keep him from misfortune. One the wedding day, all the servants at Yuni’s household are busy preparing for the wedding ceremony. Tai arrives at the bride’s house. Unlike most bridegrooms who would be full of anticipation to see his bride for the first time, Tai isn’t excited at all. While he is thinking he is unfortunate to marry an ugly woman, the bride walks toward him with her face down. As she lifts her face up, Tai cannot believe his eyes! There she was, the lady he had seen in the woods, the lady who was so beautiful that she outshone the beautiful trumpet creepers.

3번 지문

Seeing the stunning face of the bride, everyone but Mr. Lee cheers. Mr. Lee had thought that he could finally stop worrying about his son’s well-being once Tai got married to an ugly woman. But Tai’s bride was not ugly. Everything was perfect except that Yuni was a beautiful, warm-hearted lady. Mr. Lee orders the newly married couples to destroy every trumpet creeper tree in Yuni’s home before moving into his house. Tai and Yuni do as they are told, mistakenly leaving one tree in the backyard. Yuni’s parents say goodbye to their daughter, wishing the couple happiness and joy. To Tai and Yuni, every day is a gift. Their positive energy spreads out to the village and all the villagers love the young couple. Yuni behaves well as a married lady and is good to Tai’s parents. Mr. Lee, who was once suspicious of her, opens his heart and treats her as his own daughter. Their happiness doubles when Yuni gives birth to their first son. Mr. Lee names him Won, meaning the very first and the greatest. Like his name, Won, grew very fast, outgrowing all of his cousins. For a long time, this happiness seemed to last forever, making them completely forget about the prophecy.

4번 지문

n a hot summer day, Tai catches a cold that lasts for two weeks. He gets better but soon gets sick again. He lies in his bed for days and becomes sicker and sicker. Numerous doctors come and go but fail to cure him. The whole family tries everything they can think of. But it is Yuni who feels the most grief. Yuni weaves a sandal out of her hair and straw, which is a symbol of her love and hope for the recovery of her husband. Despite her efforts to heal her husband, Tai eventually dies. The villagers said that in the end, Tai failed to overcome his fate. However, Yuni’s love for Tai did not end with his death. She planted some trumpet flower seeds where Tai lay, wishing the flower which brought them together would bring her husband’s soul to her dreams. She renames the flower Neungsohwa, which means “to overcome reality.” The new name of the trumpet creeper conveys her will to overcome her pre-determined fate. Her everlasting love that continues after the death of her husband gives her the strength to live on, wishing that someday she would be reunited with her beloved.

1번 지문

Have you ever heard of the term tulip mania? As the term indicates, it has something to do with the tulip flower. The full story goes back all the way to seventeenth century Holland. Actually, the tulip is not native to Holland. Not until 1593 was it introduced to Holland by Carolus Clusius, a botanist, who brought it from Constantinople. He planted a small garden, intending to research the plant for medicinal purposes. If Clusius's neighbors had been morally upright, the tulip might still be a rare exotic plant in the gardening world. Instead they broke into his garden and stole some of his bulbs in order to make some quick money, and in the process started the Dutch bulb trade. Over the next several decades tulips became a popular trend among the rich of Holland, and the price of tulips began to rise. In a very short time, even ordinary bulbs were selling for extraordinary prices, and the prices for some of the rare types of tulip bulbs became absurdly high. A single bulb of a Viceroy, a rare type of tulip, would sell for 2,500 florins, which would be about $1,250 in current American dollars, while a Semper Augustus bulb, one of the rarest kinds of tulip, could easily go for twice the price of a Viceroy. Sometimes people traded one tulip bulb for other goods as well. The lengthy list includes, among other things, a bed, a complete suit of clothes, and a thousand pounds of cheese.

2번 지문

One curiosity of the 17th century tulip market was that people did not trade the flowers themselves but rather the bulbs of scarce varieties. The result was what would be called today, "a futures market." Tulips even began to be used as a form of money in their own right. In 1633, actual properties were sold for handfuls of tulip bulbs. This strategy led to an unexpected, rather absurd, incident. A man who ran a grocery store happened to learn that trading tulip bulbs could make him a lot of money, thus he began selling the bulbs in his store. The number of customers coming into his shop soared, and so he hired a new assistant. Interestingly, the assistant had never seen a tulip bulb in his life nor did he know how expensive one bulb was. While the owner of the store was away, he mistook a tremendously valuable tulip bulb for an onion, selling it for just one pence. Soon after, the owner came back and found out what had happened. He immediately went looking for the customer who had purchased the bulb, only to be devastated to learn that the customer had already eaten it for dinner. What he had had for dinner that evening actually cost 24 times the salary of a normal sailor in Amsterdam at that time.

3번 지문

How did the tulip market boom, and then go bust? There were several factors, but it mostly had to do with the simple rule of supply and demand. The tulip bulb was a rare commodity from the start, although ordinary bulbs were often sold by the pound. Then some of the tulips contracted a mosaic virus that altered the color of the blooms, creating red stripe patterns on their leaves. These varieties were very rare, and this started attracting wealthy collectors. This caused the price of the rare tulip bulbs to become even higher. Demand grew so rapidly that the supply of bulbs could not keep pace with the demand, and the prices rose and rose. But no market can sustain that kind of rapid growth rate forever. Eventually the price of a single tulip bulb became so high that very few buyers were able to purchase one. When no buyers showed up to buy the tulip bulbs, a domino effect occurred. Demand dropped suddenly, panic selling spread across Holland, and the price bubble burst, which caused an economic disaster for those who had speculated in the tulip market.

4번 지문

Looking back, it's easy to laugh at the foolish Dutch for paying such high prices for simple tulip bulbs, but an economic bubble was nothing new even then. We have experienced a lot of economic bubbles recently such as the real estate bubble, the stock market bubble, and the dot-com bubble. Then how can we avoid falling into another tulip mania type crisis? Christopher Menon, a financial journalist, gives us three answers to this question. First, do not yield to public opinion! To put it metaphorically, "be a shepherd not a sheep!" When the majority is sure about making money out of something, you should question whether they are right. Second, if you don't yield to public opinion in an inflated market, calculate the intrinsic value. "Price is what you pay: value is what you get," says Warren Buffet. This implies that price and value are not always the same. Thus, you should weigh the price you pay against the value of the item you wish to buy! Third, count on rationality. According to rational models of decision making, people will make choices that maximize benefit and minimize cost. If the value you can gain is higher than the price you must pay, you can take a step forward. But in the opposite case, you must stop. We have learned a valuable lesson from the economic crisis caused by tulip mania in 17th century Holland. It is now up to us to become a rational consumer in any economic activity that we do in the future!
