2023년 고2 9월 전국 연합 모의고사 변형 문제 Part 2의 지문입니다.

1번 지문(문항 번호 22번)

It's remarkable that positive fantasies help us relax to such an extent that it shows up in physiological tests. If you want to unwind, you can take some deep breaths, get a massage, or go for a walk ― but you can also try simply closing your eyes and fantasizing about some future outcome that you might enjoy. But what about when your objective is to make your wish a reality? The last thing you want to be is relaxed. You want to be energized enough to get off the couch and lose those pounds or find that job or study for that test, and you want to be motivated enough to stay engaged even when the inevitable obstacles or challenges arise. The principle of "Dream it. Wish it. Do it." does not hold true, and now we know why: in dreaming it, you undercut the energy you need to do it. You put yourself in a temporary state of complete happiness, calmness ― and inactivity.

2번 지문(문항 번호 23번)

If cooking is as central to human identity, biology, and culture as the biological anthropologist Richard Wrangham suggests, it stands to reason that the decline of cooking in our time would have serious consequences for modern life, and so it has. Are they all bad? Not at all. The outsourcing of much of the work of cooking to corporations has relieved women of what has traditionally been their exclusive responsibility for feeding the family, making it easier for them to work outside the home and have careers. It has headed off many of the domestic conflicts that such a large shift in gender roles and family dynamics was bound to spark. It has relieved other pressures in the household, including longer workdays and overscheduled children, and saved us time that we can now invest in other pursuits. It has also allowed us to diversify our diets substantially, making it possible even for people with no cooking skills and little money to enjoy a whole different cuisine. All that's required is a microwave.

3번 지문(문항 번호 24번)

As you may already know, what and how you buy can be political. To whom do you want to give your money? Which companies and corporations do you value and respect? Be mindful about every purchase by carefully researching the corporations that are taking our money to decide if they deserve our support. Do they have a record of polluting the environment, or do they have fair-trade practices and an end-of-life plan for the products they make? Are they committed to bringing about good in the world? For instance, my family has found a company producing recycled, plastic-packaging-free toilet paper with a social conscience. They contribute 50 percent of their profits to the construction of toilets around the world, and we're genuinely happy to spend our money on this special toilet paper each month. Remember that the corporate world is built on consumers, so as a consumer you have the power to vote with your wallet and encourage companies to embrace healthier and more sustainable practices with every purchase you choose to make.

4번 지문(문항 번호 26번)

Camille Flammarion was born at Montigny-le-Roi, France. He became interested in astronomy at an early age, and when he was only sixteen he wrote a book on the origin of the world. The manuscript was not published at the time, but it came to the attention of Urbain Le Verrier, the director of the Paris Observatory. He became an assistant to Le Verrier in 1858 and worked as a calculator. At nineteen, he wrote another book called The Plurality of Inhabited Worlds, in which he passionately claimed that life exists outside the planet Earth. His most successful work, Popular Astronomy, was published in 1880, and eventually sold 130,000 copies. With his own funds, he built an observatory at Juvisy and spent May to November of each year there. In 1887, he founded the French Astronomical Society and served as editor of its monthly publication.

To whom it may concern,

I would like to draw your attention to a problem that frequently occurs with the No. 35 buses. There is a bus stop about halfway along Fenny Road, at which the No. 35 buses are supposed to stop. It would appear, however, that some of your drivers are either unaware of this bus stop or for some reason choose to ignore it, driving past even though the buses are not full. I would be grateful if you could remind your drivers that this bus stop exists and that they should be prepared to stop at it. I look forward to seeing an improvement in this service soon.

Yours faithfully, John Williams

2번 지문(문항 번호 19번)

My 10-year-old appeared, in desperate need of a quarter. "A quarter? What on earth do you need a quarter for?" My tone bordered on irritation. I didn't want to be bothered with such a trivial demand. "There's a garage sale up the street, and there's something I just gotta have! It only costs a quarter. Please?" I placed a quarter in my son's hand. Moments later, a little voice said, "Here, Mommy, this is for you." I glanced down at the hands of my little son and saw a four-inch cream-colored statue of two small children hugging one another. Inscribed at their feet were words that read It starts with 'L' ends with 'E' and in between are 'O' and 'V.' As I watched him race back to the garage sale, I smiled with a heart full of happiness. That 25-cent garage sale purchase brought me a lot of joy.

3번 지문(문항 번호 20번)

Managers frequently try to play psychologist, to "figure out" why an employee has acted in a certain way. Empathizing with employees in order to understand their point of view can be very helpful. However, when dealing with a problem area, in particular, remember that it is not the person who is bad, but the actions exhibited on the job. Avoid making suggestions to employees about personal traits they should change; instead suggest more acceptable ways of performing. For example, instead of focusing on a person's "unreliability," a manager might focus on the fact that the employee "has been late to work seven times this month." It is difficult for employees to change who they are; it is usually much easier for them to change how they act.

4번 지문(문항 번호 21번)

I suspect fungi are a little more forward "thinking" than their larger partners. Among trees, each species fights other species. Let's assume the beeches native to Central Europe could emerge victorious in most forests there. Would this really be an advantage? What would happen if a new pathogen came along that infected most of the beeches and killed them? In that case, wouldn't it be more advantageous if there were a certain number of other species around ― oaks, maples, or firs ― that would continue to grow and provide the shade needed for a new generation of young beeches to sprout and grow up? Diversity provides security for ancient forests. Because fungi are also very dependent on stable conditions, they support other species underground and protect them from complete collapse to ensure that one species of tree doesn't manage to dominate.

1번 지문(문항 번호 22번)

We all negotiate every day, whether we realize it or not. Yet few people ever learn how to negotiate. Those who do usually learn the traditional, win-lose negotiating style rather than an approach that is likely to result in a winwin agreement. This old-school, adversarial approach may be useful in a one-off negotiation where you will probably not deal with that person again. However, such transactions are becoming increasingly rare, because most of us deal with the same people repeatedly — our spouses and children, our friends and colleagues, our customers and clients. In view of this, it’s essential to achieve successful results for ourselves and maintain a healthy relationship with our negotiating partners at the same time. In today’s interdependent world of business partnerships and long-term relationships, a winwin outcome is fast becoming the only acceptable result.

2번 지문(문항 번호 23번)

The interaction of workers from different cultural backgrounds with the host population might increase productivity due to positive externalities like knowledge spillovers. This is only an advantage up to a certain degree. When the variety of backgrounds is too large, fractionalization may cause excessive transaction costs for communication, which may lower productivity. Diversity not only impacts the labour market, but may also affect the quality of life in a location. A tolerant native population may value a multicultural city or region because of an increase in the range of available goods and services. On the other hand, diversity could be perceived as an unattractive feature if natives perceive it as a distortion of what they consider to be their national identity. They might even discriminate against other ethnic groups and they might fear that social conflicts between different foreign nationalities are imported into their own neighborhood.

3번 지문(문항 번호 24번)

We think we are shaping our buildings. But really, our buildings and development are also shaping us. One of the best examples of this is the oldestknown construction: the ornately carved rings of standing stones at Göbekli Tepe in Turkey. Before these ancestors got the idea to erect standing stones some 12,000 years ago, they were hunter-gatherers. It appears that the erection of the multiple rings of megalithic stones took so long, and so many successive generations, that these innovators were forced to settle down to complete the construction works. In the process, they became the first farming society on Earth. This is an early example of a society constructing something that ends up radically remaking the society itself. Things are not so different in our own time.

American jazz pianist Bill Evans was born in New Jersey in 1929. His early training was in classical music. At the age of six, he began receiving piano lessons, later adding flute and violin. He earned bachelor’s degrees in piano and music education from Southeastern Louisiana College in 1950. He went on to serve in the army from 1951 to 1954 and played flute in the Fifth Army Band. After serving in the military, he studied composition at the Manes School of Music in New York. Composer George Russell admired his playing and hired Evans to record and perform his compositions. Evans became famous for recordings made from the late1950s through the 1960s. He won his first Grammy Award in 1964 for his album Conversations with Myself. Evans’ expressive piano works and his unique harmonic approach inspired a whole generation of musicians.

Dear Professor Sanchez,

My name is Elis Wight, and I’m the director of the Alexandria Science Museum. We are holding a Chemistry Fair for local middle school students on Saturday, October 28. The goal of the fair is to encourage them to be interested in science through guided experiments. We are looking for college students who can help with the experiments during the event. I am contacting you to ask you to recommend some students from the chemistry department at your college who you think are qualified for this job. With their help, I’m sure the participants will have a great experience. I look forward to hearing from you son.

Sincerely,

Elis Wight

Greg and I had been rock climbing since sunrise and had had no problems. So we took a risk. “Look, the first bolt is right there. I can definitely climb out to it. Piece of cake,” I persuaded Greg, minutes before I found myself pined. It wasn’t a piece of cake. The rock was deceptively barren of handholds. I clumsily moved back and forth across the cliff face and ended up with nowhere to go… but down. The bolt that would save my life, if I could get to it, was about two feet above my reach. My arms trembled from exhaustion. I looked at Greg. My body froze with fright from my neck down to my toes. Our rope was tied between us. If I fell, he would fall with me.

3번 지문(문항 번호 20번)

We are always teaching our children something by our words and our actions. They learn from seeing. They learn from hearing and from overhearing. Children share the values of their parents about the most important things in life. Our priorities and principles and our examples of god behavior can teach our children to take the high road when other roads look tempting. Remember that children do not learn the values that make up strong character simply by being told about them. They learn by seeing the people around them act on and uphold those values in their daily lives. Therefore show your child god examples of life by your action. In our daily lives, we can show our children that we respect others. We can show them our compassion and concern when others are suffering, and our own self-discipline, courage and honesty as we make difficult decisions.

4번 지문(문항 번호 21번)

Most people have no doubt heard this question: If a tree falls in the forest and there is no one there to hear it fall, does it make a sound? The correct answer is no. Sound is more than pressure waves, and indeed there can be no sound without a hearer. And similarly, scientific communication is a two-way process. Just as a signal of any kind is useless unless it is perceived, a published scientific paper (signal) is useless unless it is both received and understood by its intended audience. Thus we can restate the axiom of science as follows: A scientific experiment is not complete until the results have been published and understood. Publication is no more than pressure waves unless the published paper is understood. To many scientific papers fall silently in the woods.

더메이킹스(The Makings)가 제작한 2015년 개정 영어 금성(최인철) 8과의 지문입니다.

1번 지문

Have you ever frowned at thoughtless people who were talking loudly in the library? Have you ever felt threatened by people pushing you aside on the subway? Did you jaywalk on the way to school today? All of these are related to civic life. Responsible citizens form a safer, cleaner community where members contribute to one another’s happiness and comfort. The three examples below show how a responsible citizen should act.

• Civic awareness begins when people follow simple rules such as traffic regulations. However, many ambulance drivers complain of selfish drivers and careless pedestrians.

“Please move over. This is an emergency!”

Even though an ambulance driver shouted this to the cars nearby and the siren was ringing, only some cars were slowly changing their lanes. According to traffic regulations, drivers must make way for emergency vehicles.

Pedestrians also caused difficulties. Several pedestrians who crossed the street at a red light blocked the way, delaying the ambulance’s arrival. When the ambulance finally arrived at the destination, the driver said, “It is very fortunate that we made it in time! But the people who didn’t make way for us should be ashamed of themselves for having broken traffic laws.”

2번 지문

• Responsible citizens also show good manners. When they are in public places, they keep order and clean up after themselves.

Last Saturday, thousands of people flocked to a fireworks festival. Even though the fireworks were beautiful, some people’s misbehavior made it hard to fully enjoy the beauty of the fireworks. Most people observed the law. However, some people pushed one another, hurting others. The police reported that more than a hundred people had been hurt and fourteen of them had been taken to hospital that day. Furthermore, volunteer workers had a very hard time cleaning up the area as it was full of garbage. “I wish people cared more about others than just about themselves,” said a volunteer worker.

3번 지문

• Last, but not least, good citizens do not neglect but help their neighbors in need.

On February 14th at 6:20 a.m., the 119 emergency center received an urgent call. “There is a fire in the building! And there are people inside!” When the firefighters and the 119 rescue team arrived at the scene, the firefighters were not faced with the usual parking problem. The neighbors had already moved their cars to make space for the fire engine. When the rescue team arrived on the fifteenth floor, they saw some neighbors trying to put out the fire with fire extinguishers. With the neighbors’ help, the 119 team rescued the family who had been trapped inside. The neighbor who called 119 said, “I was so relieved to see them safe.” The head officer of the emergency center said, “The neighbors’ help and our team’s quick response kept the fire from turning into a bigger disaster. We’d like to thank the neighbors for having helped the rescue.”

4번 지문

These three examples show simple ways to become a responsible citizen. Observing simple regulations, showing good manners in public, and helping neighbors in need can prevent a lot of tragic accidents. Each individual has the potential to contribute to making the world a better place. These days, more and more drivers are making way for emergency vehicles. Our manners are noticeably improving. There are many volunteers who are more than willing to help those in need. Becoming a responsible citizen and making the community a better place are not difficult. Observe the law. Keep order. C

U.K.

The U.K.’s creative industries are largely based on its imaginative literature. The very writer who gave life to Frodo was British, along with the icon of classic literature—Shakespeare. One of the most successful writers of all time is British as well. J.K. Rowling’s work has attracted millions of people to visit London to see the Harry Potter Studios, Platform at King’s Cross Station, and the cafe where the series was written. The Harry Potter series is known to have earned the U.K. a large amount of money so far. One unique aspect of the U.K.’s culture is its storytelling clubs. In storytelling clubs, people gather to share interesting stories, feeding children’s imagination. Combined with such creativity, some of these stories are beautifully translated into books, films, and the performing arts.

U.S.A.

The United States of America is another country whose cultural attractions have earned major tourism dollars. Its greatest strength lies in its glamor. Hollywood studios create some of the most fantastic and dynamic movies in the world, making use of their fine computer graphics. Not only that, people can enjoy Universal Studios, a theme park based on the famous movie industry. Here, visitors can enjoy fun rides as well as fantastic shows based on real Hollywood movies such as Shrek. Culturally, the U.S.A. also features Broadway in New York. If you had the chance to visit Broadway, you would be amazed by the glamor of the musicals. You could enjoy the realistic make-up and costumes in The Lion King, the fun dance and music of Mamma Mia!, and the terrific songs and plot of The Phantom of the Opera. Broadway shows are estimated to have gained more than 1.3 billion dollars in 2015-2016.

KOREA

If you were asked to name one successful creative industry in Korea, what would you choose? It would be a hard question because there are so many. In fact, Korea’s creative industries are reported to have been internationally successful for more than a decade. Nowadays, the economic impact of the “Korean Wave” is increasing by using new technology and good strategies. In particular, K-pop is gaining large profits using advanced technologies. A new type of concert, a combination of K-pop and hologram technology, is quite profitable. In this concert the audience feels as if the singer were actually on stage. Attracted to its uniqueness, more and more K-pop fans flock to hologram concert halls. Marketing strategies are another key to the success of the Korean Wave. In the character industry, some characters are first introduced in an animated series before they are made into toys, theme parks, and other products. This way, the characters can expand into other fields once they prove to be popular. Many companies also use a marketing strategy called product placement for indirect advertising on TV shows. These companies take advantage of the fact that Korean Wave fans abroad pay close attention to what products Korean celebrities use on TV shows and try to purchase the same items as they do.

Other Countries

Along with the U.K., the U.S.A., and Korea, many other countries around the world are promoting their creative industries. Bollywood in India, the largest movie industry in the world, is attracting more and more fans with its unique products. China, a country with rich cultural and historical resources, is introducing policies to support its creative industries. Japan has launched its own brand “Cool Japan” to promote Japanese creative industries such as animation and J-pop. As some scholars predict, creative industries may be the next global industry, just like farming or manufacturing was in the past. Who knows? The next generation’s leading CEOs may be imaginative daydreamers or romantic writers.

Drones, small unmanned aerial vehicles, do many jobs on a farm. One of these is to survey fields. Survey drones have GPS-controlled autopilots that let them take off, fly their routes, and land by themselves. They are also equipped with many cameras that take pictures of the fields from the air. As the drones fly, they take pictures from different angles and with different lenses. The images are then analyzed to check for weed growth, ground moisture, and soil conditions. Especially, when drones take pictures with infrared lenses, which sense heat, they can see if plants are healthy or not - because healthy and unhealthy plants give off different amounts of heat. This information helps farmers take care of their crops better, thus increasing the quality and quantity of production.

2번 지문

An army of agribots, small autonomous robots designed for agricultural purposes, replaces human workers for a wide range of tasks. In general, agribots tend crops, and each of them is highly specialized for weeding, fertilizing, harvesting, or other farm work. Agribots have many benefits. For example, weeding robots can reduce the amount of pollution caused by herbicide use. Fertilizing robots can greatly reduce fertilizer costs by precisely applying the correct amount of fertilizer in the correct location. Using 3D imaging cameras, harvesting robots can pick fruits and vegetables without damaging them. Most importantly, agribots can operate 24/7, 365 days a year, solving the shortage of farm labor while increasing the speed and accuracy of the work.

3번 지문

Although agribots are widely used in all the important functions of farming, tractors are still needed for many large-scale and heavy-load tasks. Nowadays, they are evolving into self-driving vehicles. Smart tractors are equipped with GPS controls. They also have optimized route planning software which recommends the shortest route across the field. This can minimize soil erosion by ensuring that all farm tractors follow the same tracks. In addition, the self-driving tractors are accurate down to the millimeter. This means that they can plant seeds in the correct place and harvest crops with no unnecessary movements. Besides, they can reduce crop damage and other losses caused by human drivers going off track and into the crops. These smart, self-driving vehicles can also operate during low visibility conditions such as rain, dust, fog, and darkness.

4번 지문

Sensors attached to cows check their temperature, movement, behavior, and so on. When changes are observed, the sensors send a message to the farmer's phone or computer. For example, these sensors are being used to detect if an animal's back legs begin to lower, which is one of the first signs of illness. They can also sense if a cow is pregnant. This technology saves farmers dozens of hours a week that would otherwise be spent closely monitoring each cow. It also saves money for vets' bills by allowing farmers to deal with cows' illnesses before they get too serious. It goes without saying that using sensors to monitor the health of individual cows lets them live longer, healthier lives, and also improves milk production.

5번 지문

Smart farms take all the information from drones and animal sensors and collect it in the cloud. The information can be analyzed and then presented to farmers in a practical way. Based on the analyzed data, the farmers make informed decisions about an animal, a field, or the entire farm. The farmers' decisions are programmed into agribots and smart tractors immediately. The more data there are about conditions on the farm, the more accurate the decisions will be, making the farm more efficient and profitable. In a world with fewer food resources, but with more people to feed, ICT-based agriculture can help humankind address the challenges of the future. The amount of food produced can be maximized, while the impact on the environment can be minimized through the efficient use of people, equipment, and information. The future of agriculture depends on the smart use of ICT.문

1번 지문

Tree-ear bowed low. As he bent down, his courage suddenly fled, leaving his knees as weak as grass. I must be hungry, he thought as he straightened his body, ashamed that he could think of such a thing at such a moment. "You are here from Julpo. From Potter Min," the emissary stated. "Yes, honorable sir." The emissary waited. "Well?" he said. "Where is the work?" Tree-ear swallowed hard. "Sir, on my way here, I was attacked by robbers. They - they destroyed my master's work -" The assistant stepped forward in anger. "How dare you, fool! How dare you demand to meet the emissary with nothing to show him!" He grabbed Tree-ear's arm to pull him out the door. The weakness in Tree-ear's knees spread through his whole body. The assistant was right. He had been a fool. First, he was a failure, now he was a fool. But the emissary had risen to his feet and gestured at his assistant, who stepped back. "I am greatly disappointed," Emissary Gim said. "I have been looking forward to seeing Potter Min's work again."

Tree-ear hung his head. "Humblest apologies to the honorable emissary," he mumbled. Slowly, he took the shard from his waist pouch. He drew in a deep breath and looked down at the shard before he spoke. It looked odd, wrapped in clay. But the inlay work was still delicate and clear, the glaze still fine and pure. Seeing it gave Tree-ear a last pulse of courage. "It is only a piece, honorable Emissary. And yet, I believe that it shows all of my master's skill." And with both hands, he held it out for the emissary. The emissary looked surprised but accepted the offering. He inspected it carefully. He took off the wrapping of clay and looked carefully at the edges of the shard. Then Emissary Gim sat down at his table again. He chose one of the scrolls in front of him, picked up his brush, and began writing. Tree-ear stood with his head bowed to hide tears of shame. Obviously, the emissary had already moved on to other business, but it would be rude for Tree-ear to leave before he had been dismissed. He wondered if he should take back the shard, which the emissary had placed carefully on the table.

3번 지문

In his despair, Tree-ear still felt grateful - grateful that the emissary had not laughed in his face for the stupidity of traveling all that way with only a single shard to show. At his side he heard the assistant gasp in surprise. The emissary had called the man and was showing him the scroll. "Go. See that it is done," said the emissary. "Master -" The assistant hesitated. "How is it that a commission can be awarded without seeing the work?" The man's polite words could not hide the disapproval in his voice. "I understand your skepticism," the emissary answered patiently. "But I have seen this man's work, in Julpo and again here." He bent and picked up the shard from the table. "Do you see this? 'Glow of jade and clarity of water' - that is what is said about the finest celadon glaze. It is said of very few pieces." He paused for a moment and held the shard up before him. "It is true of this one. And the inlay work is remarkable." His voice faded for a moment as he gazed in obvious admiration at the shard. Then he handed the scroll to the assistant. "Now, go and do as I ask you." The assistant bowed quickly and left.

Emissary Gim looked at Tree-ear. There was kindness in his eyes - like Crane-man's. "I have written orders for him to secure your trip back to Julpo by sea," he said. "You will go and deliver a message to your master for me. I am assigning him a commission. Tell me, have you worked for Potter Min long?" Tree-ear was stunned by the man's words, spoken in such a calm, ordinary voice. Through his disbelief and confusion, he heard himself answer, "A year and a half, honorable sir." "Good. Then perhaps you can tell me - for your master to do his best work, how many pieces per year might I expect from him?" Concentrating on the answer to the emissary's question helped steady Tree-ear. "I think ten. Not fewer, but I don't think he can make many more." He looked up and spoke with quiet pride, "My master works slowly." The emissary nodded slowly, "He must. We need his best work." He bowed his head to Tree-ear, "If you have need of shelter here in Songdo, my assistant will see to it that you are housed and fed until the boat sails. Your coming is greatly appreciated." Tree-ear wanted to laugh, to cry, to throw his arms around the emissary and dance wildly around the room. Instead, he bowed all the way to the ground. He could not speak but prayed that the emissary understood his silent thanks. There were some things that could not be put into words.
