Sumin, a Korean ex-change student in America, asks a question to her teacher, "Mr. Mann, do we bring our own lunch to the school trip tomorrow?" The teacher looks puzzled, thinking that Sumin wanted to eat lunch with him and asks back, "Uh.. Sumin, who are WE?" Sumin does not understand why Mr. Mann is confused and answers, "Me and my friends!" He thought of "we" as "you and me." Here, the misunderstanding arises from the different definitions of "we" that the Korean student and the American teacher have.

So why do these two cultures have different ways of thinking? What impact does culture have on cognition? Psychologist Richard Nisbett has conducted dozens of studies to find out the answer to this question. Presented inThe Geography of Thought: How Asians and Westerners Think Differently, the results of his studies are fascinating. In the book, psychologists conducted tests of inference, logic, or decision making to compare two different groups, "Asians" and "Westerners." Here are a few examples of their remarkable findings.

2번 지문

(A) Chinese, Korean, and American students were asked to read newspaper reports about mass shootings. When asked why the killings happened, Chinese and Korean students were far more likely to blame situational factors (such as "he was isolated from the rest of his class" or "availability of guns in the United States") while Americans were more likely to focus on the shooter's personality traits or psychological problems (such as "he suffered from severe depression" or "political belief that guns were a legitimate means to resolve a problem").

(B) When asked to describe themselves either in particular contexts or without specifying a situation (e.g. I work very diligently on school projects, I am a loving child, or like to cook with my friend vs. I am loving, diligent, or like to cook), Japanese people had difficulty describing themselves without referencing context; Americans not only preferred to describe themselves in terms of universal attributes, but many had trouble understanding the concept of describing themselves "in context" at all.

(C) When shown pictures of grass, a chicken, and a cow and then asked to select which of the three did not belong, American children were far more likely to choose the grass (because the other two are animals), while Chinese children were far more likely to choose the chicken (because the cow eats the grass).

(D) American and Japanese students were asked to view a video of a fish tank that contained several fish in the foreground with bubbles, water plants, rocks, and a smaller fish in the background. They were later tested on what they remembered from the scene. Japanese students were twice as likely to remember unmoving, background objects as Americans. When asked to describe what they saw, Japanese students first referred to the environment ("it looked like a pond"), while Americans were three times as likely to refer to something in the foreground ("there were three big fish swimming to the left") as Japanese.

3번 지문

When numerous studies of this sort are placed side by side, one can draw a clear conclusion. Asians perceive the world as a complex, constantly changing, and interrelated whole. On the other hand, Westerners perceive the world as what can be analyzed, categorized, and divided into individual parts. Asians have difficulty understanding an object apart from its context; Westerners often never see the context at all. Asians see themselves as part of one larger whole. They accept social order and are quicker to notice the feelings of others. Westerners try hard to make themselves look good and look unique. Westerners demand social equality; Asians aim for social harmony.

However,The Geography of Thoughtis not without its limitations. Careful readers will notice that the "East" and "West" in the book are narrower than normally defined, with the East meaning "China, Korea, or Japan" and the West meaning "America, Canada, Great Britain, or Australia." The studies that do include continental Europeans suggest that human cognition cannot be simply separated into West and East.

4번 지문

When the attitudes and perceptions of developed countries are surveyed, three distinct groupings emerge. The Americans, British, Canadians, and Australians had a strong 'individualist' tendency. As expected, Korean, Japanese, and Chinese preferences were far on the opposite side. Most surprising were the French, Germans, Belgians, and Italians, whose preferences were between the two although they are considered "Westerners."

This is a fatal flaw in Professor Nisbett's argument that the cognitive difference between East and West has deep seated historical and sociological roots. The problem is worsened by the studies of bicultural individuals. When given contextual cues that they were encountering an "Eastern" or "Western" situation, these individuals unconsciously flipped their world views. This suggests that many of these differences are not deeply rooted in history or socioeconomics.

Despite these weaknesses this book is an important one. The actual data presented is hard to argue with, and its implications are far ranging. There are other fields (such as marketing, organizational science, public diplomacy, and second language learning) that can make good use of these studies. The studies presented inThe Geography of Thoughtare really just the beginning. This is one of the most exciting areas of research offered by modern psychology and every other field related to it.

Have you ever observed ants and wondered about their skillful and well organized work? When you see ants walk confidently across the kitchen counter, don't you think ants seem to have a plan they have made in groups? They seem to know where they are going and what needs to be done. How else can ants organize highways, build elaborate nests, stage epic raids, and do all the other things that ants do?

However, you are wrong. Ants aren't clever little engineers, architects, or warriors, at least not as individuals. "Ants aren't smart, but ant colonies are," says Deborah M. Gordon, a biologist at Stanford University. A colony can solve problems unthinkable for individual ants, such as finding the shortest path to the best food source, allocating workers to different tasks, or defending a territory from neighbors. As individuals, ants might not be smart, but as colonies they respond quickly and effectively to their environment. They do it with something called swarm intelligence. It means the collective behavior of a group of animals, especially social insects that are each following very basic rules. We can find many more examples of this swarm intelligence from bees, herring, and so on, in addition to ants.

How do the simple actions of individuals add up to the complex behavior of a group? How do hundreds of honeybees make a critical decision about their hive if many of them disagree? What enables a school of herring to coordinate its movements precisely so that it may change direction in a flash, like a single, silvery organism?

2번 지문

None of them grasps the big picture, but each of them contributes to the group's success. The collective abilities of such animals seem miraculous even to the biologists who know them best.

Where does this swarm intelligence come from, then? During the past few decades, researchers have come up with intriguing insights. One key to an ant colony, for example, is that no one's in charge. No generals command ant warriors. No managers boss ant workers. The queen plays no role except to lay eggs. Even with half a million ants, a colony functions just fine with no management at all. It relies instead upon countless interactions between individual ants, each of which is following simple rules of thumb. Scientists describe such a system as self-organizing.

That's how swarm intelligence works: simple creatures following simple rules, each one acting on local information. No ant sees the big picture. No ant tells any other ant what to do. No leadership is required. Even complex behavior may be coordinated by relatively simple interactions.

3번 지문

Different animals have different methods of interaction. For example, ants leave a trail of pheromones so that other ants may follow them. A key component of bee interaction is movement. When bees need to move their hive to a new place, scout bees go out in search of a suitable place to live in. When they return, they each do a type of dance. The happier the bee is about the new location, the faster the dance is.

In addition, the dance includes a code with directions to the new location. The excited dancers excite other scout bees. These bees then fly out to check out the new locations. They come back, get close together, and dance with the other excited bees. The bees will not move until they are all excited, or in agreement about the best location. Once a large enough group of bees all agree, they convince the thousands of other bees. Then they all fly together to the new location.

4번 지문

Scientists are realizing how effective swarm intelligence is. Some scientists are applying what they've learned to solve human problems. Thomas Seeley, a biologist at Cornell University, is impressed by how well bees make decisions. According to him, the bees' rules for decision making are: seek a diversity of options, encourage a free competition among ideas, and use an effective mechanism to narrow choices. He is so impressed.

He now uses them at Cornell as chairman of his department. "I've applied what I've learned from the bees to run faculty meetings," he says. He tries to avoid going into a faculty meeting with his mind made up, hearing only what he wants to hear, and pressuring people to conform. He asks his group to identify all the possibilities, show their ideas for a while, then vote by secret ballot. It's exactly what the swarm bees do, which gives a group time to let the best ideas emerge and win. He says that running meetings using swarm intelligence ideas can lead to better decisions. It can also reduce conflict among the staff.

Now, can you find any example of swarm intelligence used in your everyday life? Of course, you can. The Internet search engines can be the example. When you type in a search query, they survey billions of web pages on their index servers, and provide a huge amount of the most relevant information for you at a remarkable speed. There are surely more examples in which you use group smarts like this in your daily life. Don't you think this swarm intelligence will give you more significant help in your life in the future?

What is conversational narcissism?

Many of you would be familiar with the Greek mythology about Narcissus, who falls in love with the beautiful reflection of himself in the water and stares at his own reflection until he dies. This story is the origin of the termnarcissism, which refers to the obsession and admiration of one's own physical appearance. But not many of you may have heard the termconversational narcissism. It actually occurs in our daily conversations although we may not be aware of it. In the bookThe Pursuit of Attention, the author shares fascinating results from studying 1,500 conversations in face-to-face interactions. It turns out that without being aware of it, most people struggle with "conversational narcissism." The author describes it as the key indication of the dominant attention getting psychology in conversations. He writes, "It most frequently occurs in informal conversations among teenage friends." Since one's self awareness is formed most actively during adolescence, teens often focus on getting attention rather than giving it.

2번 지문

Sally: Hi, Chris. How are you?

Chris: Oh, my god. I have to tell you everything that's happening in my life! It's been nuts.

In the above dialogue, Chris shows an example of a typical conversational narcissist. Your first reaction to this would probably be something like: "Oh, I don't do that!" But not so fast. We are all guilty of it. We have all had conversations where we pretend to listen, but we are focusing on what we want to say next.

A good conversation is an interesting thing. But in order to make it interesting, group effort is necessary. Each individual has to sacrifice a little for the benefit of the whole group and to increase the pleasure of the conversation. That's why it is important that conversations are cooperative not competitive. But many people, teens especially, make conversations into competitions. In the process, they become a conversational narcissist without being aware of it.

How conversational narcissism occurs in a conversation

During a conversation, each person makes initiatives. These initiatives can either be attention giving or attention getting. Conversational narcissists concentrate more on the latter because they want others' attention on themselves. The response to an initiative can take two forms: the shift response and the support response. The support response keeps attention on the speaker and the speaker's topic. The shift response attempts to change the topic and shift the attention to the other person.

3번 지문

Support Response

Brian: I'm thinking about buying a new smartphone.

Sally: Oh, yeah? What models have you looked at?

Shift Response

Brian: I'm thinking about buying a new smartphone.

Sally: Oh, yeah? I'm thinking about buying a new phone, too.

Brian: Really?

Sally: Yup, it'll be a gift from my grandmother for my birthday.

In the first example, Sally keeps the attention on Brian with her support response. In the second example, Sally attempts to turn the conversation to herself with a shift response.

Now it’s important to point out that although a shift response opens up the opportunity for a person to grab the attention, it doesn't necessarily mean he or she is going to. It’s a matter of intent. You might just share a bit of your own experience and then bring the conversation back to the other person. That's a healthy and natural part of the give and take of conversation. Let's turn back to Sally and Brian:

Brian: I'm thinking about buying a new smartphone.

Sally: Oh, yeah? I'm thinking about buying a new phone, too.

Brian: Really? Maybe we could go look around together.

Sally: Sure. So what models are you looking at?

Brian: I'm not sure.

Sally: Well, what are the most important things to you? Are you more interested in the design, capacity, or the definition of the camera?

Here Sally interjects about herself, but then she turns the attention back to Brian.

4번 지문

Conversational narcissists, on the other hand, keep interjecting themselves until the attention has finally shifted to them. Like this:

Brian: I'm thinking about buying a new smartphone.

Sally: Oh, yeah? I'm thinking about buying a new phone, too.

Brian: Really? Maybe we could go look around together.

Sally: Sure. I saw a new model yesterday. It's expensive, but think it's worth it.

Brian: I don't want to spend too much money on my phone.

Sally: Well, I want something with all the functions available so that I don't have to buy any extra devices. I think that's a waste of money.

To summarize, it's fine to share things about yourself, as long as you turn the attention back to the person who initiated the topic. The best rule to follow is to let the person tell most of their story or problem first, and then share your own experience.

Beyond conversational narcissism

Avoiding these traps of conversational narcissism will help you become a charismatic conversationalist. When someone introduces a topic, your job is to draw out the story from him or her by giving encouragement and asking supportive questions. It is important that you wait until the topic has run its course. By offering attention and being a little more considerate, you can make your conversations enjoyable, which will lead to a more cherishable relationship.

Story 1 The Weight of the Glass

A professor walked around on a stage while teaching. She raised a glass of water and asked, "How heavy is this glass of water?" Students shouted out various answers.

She replied, "From my perspective, the weight of this glass doesn't matter. It all depends on how long I hold it. If I hold it for a minute or two, it's fairly light. If I hold it for an hour, it may make my arm ache. If I hold it for an entire day, my arm will likely cramp up, which will force me to eventually drop the glass. In each case, the weight of the glass doesn't change, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it feels to me."

"Some of your worries are like this glass of water. Think about them for a short while, and nothing happens. Think about them a bit longer, and you begin to ache a little. Think about them all day long, and you will feel numb and be incapable of doing anything else until you drop them."

Story 2 Potatoes, Eggs, and Coffee Beans

One day, a daughter complained to her father about the problems she was struggling with. She was frustrated because it seemed that just as one problem was solved, another followed.

Her father took her to the kitchen. He filled three pots with water and placed potatoes, eggs, and ground coffee beans in each of the three pots. He then let them boil. After twenty minutes, he turned off the stove. Turning to her, he asked, "What do you see?" "Potatoes, eggs, and coffee," she hastily replied. "Yes, but look closer," he said, "and tell me what happened to each." Shortly after, she found that the potatoes became soft. After peeling off the shells of the eggs, she noted that the inside of the eggs became firm. Finally, she took a sip of the coffee and smiled at the aroma. "Alright, Dad. What are you trying to tell me?" she asked.

He explained that each of these objects had faced the same adversity, but each one reacted differently. "The potato was strong and hard, but became soft and weak after sitting in the boiling water. The inside of the egg was fragile but became hardened after being boiled in the water. The ground coffee beans stayed intact but changed the water itself, making it fragrant and flavorful."

"Which are you?" he asked his daughter, "When adversity knocks on your door, how do you respond? You can lose your strength though you started strong. You can be tough with a stiff spirit though you started weak. Or, you can change the circumstance that was brought about by adversity for the better. Are you a potato, an egg, or a coffee bean?"

Story 3 The Races

Once upon a time, there lived a young athletic boy who prepared himself for a running competition. He ran with determination, strength, and power, and always beat other competitors. Whenever the boy was running for a prize, a large crowd gathered together to watch the race. A wise old man, upon hearing of the boy, had traveled far to watch his races. Though the crowd cheered loudly for the boy, the wise man stayed still and calm, expressing no sentiment.

The little boy felt proud and important. "I can beat anyone!" cried the little boy. After hearing this, the wise man said to him, "Now I present two new challengers to you." Behind him were an elderly lady and a blind man. "Race!" said the wise man.

The race began, and the boy was the only finisher because the elderly lady and the blind man were left standing at the starting line. The little boy noted that the crowd did not cheer for him this time, which puzzled him. In the middle of the crowd was sitting the wise old man, looking calmly at the boy. He ran to the wise man and asked, "Why don't people cheer for me now?"

"Race again,” replied the wise man, "but this time, finish together."

The little boy stood between the blind man and the elderly lady, holding them arm in arm. The race began, and the little boy walked slowly with the others. When they crossed the finishing line, the crowd cheered loudly and waved at the boy. The wise man smiled. He said, "Well done, little boy. You've won a lot more in this race than in any other you've run before. You are a real winner." Now the little boy was greatly delighted, and he felt proud and important again.

A Letter from My Heart

To my beloved friends,

I'm happy to have a chance to write this letter as I have just turned 17. You've probably noticed that I look much older than you. The illness I've suffered from since I was born has aged my body much faster than normal people, and I don't know how many more years I will have. Through this letter, I'd like to share with you a few things I've learned about life before it's too late.

First, try to be OK with what you ultimately CAN'T do. There is so much you CAN do. I can't do hard physical activities like running long distances. Instead, I choose to focus on the activities I can do and I feel passionate about.

Second, surround yourself with people you want to be around. I feel most alive when I'm surrounded by those I love. Remember to appreciate and love the people around you, which will make a truly positive impact on your life.

Last but not least, keep moving forward. I try hard not to feel badly for myself. Whenever I feel down, I accept and acknowledge my feelings so that I can move past them. Don't look backwards for too long, but try to have something to look forward to. Please take the time to think over my words. I hope they can guide you through hardships you might face in your life.

With love,

Sam

1번 지문

I was resting on my couch after a long day. Helping needy people all day is not easy, but it gives me joy. Suddenly, the terrible noise from the apartment above started again. I had heard that some thoughtless, inconsiderate mothers let their children ride bicycles and skateboards inside their homes these days, and I imagined what was going on up there. I picked up the intercom to call the apartment manager again. “May I help you?” he said. His voice seemed impatient. “Is this about the noise upstairs again? Do you want me to tell her to be quiet?” I hung up and waited.

In a moment, my intercom rang, and the apartment manager said, “The woman upstairs says she’s being very careful about the noise, and she says she’s sorry.” He hung up.

2번 지문

Sorry? Wasn't the annoying sound the same as before, and why was she being so inconsiderate? Since I was determined to end the matter once and for all, I grabbed the intercom again and asked him to connect me to Apartment 909.

After many rings, a young woman's voice answered. I spoke strongly, “Listen, I live downstairs―unfortunately right below you―and I've had just about enough of your rudeness. There are do's and don'ts when we live in an apartment, aren't there? The noise from your apartment has pushed me to the point where I'm almost ill.”

“Look,” responded the young woman, “if I had had the ability myself, I'd have been quieter. Can't I just move around normally in my own home? You've gone way too far with this, and I'm becoming nervous since you complain almost every day.” Her voice became desperate. “What do you want me to do?”

I stood up a little straighter, and I held the intercom even more tightly. I made my voice calm and polite. “I want what any reasonable person would want,” I said. “For you to be understanding and considerate. I wish you'd been quieter, that's all.”

3번 지문

I firmly put the phone down. How shameless! I couldn't stop thinking about her rudeness. Yet the wisdom that comes with age told me that the angrier I became, the more I needed to calm myself down and act carefully. Suddenly, I remembered a pair of slippers that I had received as a present but had not used. A present can be a good way to communicate. The slippers could represent my suffering and at the same time serve as a constant reminder to soften the sound of her steps. I'd teach her in this quiet way how to live with others as a considerate neighbor.

I placed the slippers in an almost new gift bag and added a small, used ribbon. Then I walked upstairs and rang the bell. No one answered. I could hear someone inside, so I waited. With her cooperation, I'd have already delivered the gift along with a kind greeting such as, “We're neighbors, but we haven't exchanged hellos yet ....” But now I was being made to wait.

Finally, the noise became louder as it approached the door. The lock turned once halfway, then again completely, and the door slowly opened. A young lady looked up at me from the doorway. She was seated in a big, metal wheelchair. Far from angry, her face looked tired and worn, and I hid the slippers behind me as quickly and naturally as I could.

“Actually, I was just about to replace the wheels. I'd have done it earlier if it hadn't taken so long to order new ones online. Anyway, I'm sorry, and I can't even offer you some tea because my helper isn't here right now.”

My eyes ran away from her face and fell instead on her lap and then her legs resting under a colorful blanket. The noise had ended, and now there was only silence. My slippers felt heavy in the cheap bag as I looked back at her face and tried to find something to say.

One evening my mother prepared dinner for the family after a long, hard day's work. She placed a vegetable dish and burnt bread on the table. I was waiting to see if my father would say something about the burnt bread. To my surprise, my father just enjoyed the bread as usual and asked me how school was.

I do not remember what I told him that night. However, I remember I heard my mother saying sorry to my father for the burnt bread. More importantly, I clearly remember him saying, "Honey, I love burnt bread." Later that night, before I went to bed, I asked my father if he had really liked the burnt bread. He wrapped me in his arms and replied, “Son, your mother put in a long, hard day at work, and she was exhausted. Sometimes we forget that, don't we? Besides, burnt bread never hurts anyone, but harsh words do.” I will never forget what he said.

1번 지문

Jina won first prize in the school singing contest. She chose a popular song from the 1980s to sing in front of all the students. Jina’s best friend, Eunji, recorded the performance on her cell phone. After the contest, Jina showed the video file to her parents. Jina’s father said, “Oh, your grandfather should watch this! This song is one of his favorites.” Jina wanted to send the video file to her grandfather right away, but she realized he didn’t have an email address or a smartphone. She felt sorry about this because she had no choice but to wait until she could visit her grandparents. Here is her story. When I visited my grandfather, he used to tell me about when he was my age. I have heard it hundreds of times, so I already know what he will say after, “When I was your age, ...” One of his least favorite things was any kind of digital device. This time I thought I could change his mind because he really enjoyed watching my singing performance on my phone. I told him, “Grandpa, I really want you to have a smartphone or an email address. If you use it, we can share many things and talk more often.” However, my grandfather kept saying that it would be too difficult to use a smartphone or email. He believed digital devices worsened the generation gap. I wondered why he held on to his negative attitudes toward digital technologies. I found it hard to narrow the gap between us, so I said to my father, “Grandpa simply can’t understand my generation.”

2번 지문

After having dinner at my grandparents’ house, I received a message with two photos from my father. He said, “Jina, what do you think about these two photos?” The first photo was in black and white, and it was taken when my father was very young. In the picture, all the family members were eating some fruit together. As I saw their smiling faces in the picture, I could feel real happiness. On the other hand, the second photo was totally different. My father had taken this photo before we had dinner. I was playing online games on my smartphone, and my brother was talking with his friends using a mobile messaging app while my grandfather was just watching TV. There seemed to be an invisible wall separating us from our grandfather.

3번 지문

I felt sorry for my grandparents as I saw the photos. I began to understand how my grandfather felt, so I asked my father how I could bridge the gap between my grandparents and me. He said, “Jina, I know you’re very good at computers. Why don’t you make a digital family album? Even better, you could add some songs we all love, along with your singing contest video file. Your grandfather will be very pleased to be able to share his life history with you.” I thought digital devices could connect our family and strengthen the family bonds. I suggested the idea to my grandfather, and he accepted it with a big smile. Our digital family album starts with “When my grandfather was my age, ...”

4번 지문

When my grandfather was my age, the Korean War broke out. Things were quite different from the way we live now. He remembers how people suffered from cold, hunger, and poverty even after the war. My grandfather decided to leave his sick mother, two brothers, and three sisters because he was the only one who could earn money. Finally, he moved from his hometown to Seoul to make more money. As a laborer in the 1970s, he worked for a big construction company in Saudi Arabia and Iran for many years. When he thought of his family in Korea, he had to put up with all his difficulties. A love of music runs in the family. Music has been my grandfather’s best friend throughout his life. He often listens to music when he feels sad. He told me he really liked the song that I sang at the singing contest. He also introduced me to a lot of songs I had never heard before. They were really amazing. We chose the first song for the background music of our digital family album. We found it interesting to make our own digital family album together. My grandparents said they felt closer to me and my brother because our family talked about the photos and the old days. I was glad to learn about their past, and they also looked happy to share their stories with me. We have finished making the first two chapters of our digital family album, and we decided to choose some photos of my grandmother for the next chapter. My grandmother has already selected her favorite song for the background music.

Our digital family album will never end!

1번 지문

Good morning, everyone. Welcome to the Center for Environmental Management. I am Kim Jisu, head instructor at the center. Today, I'm going to introduce an interesting way of protecting the environment.

Look at this picture. Have you ever seen these arrow symbols? You've probably seen the one on the left on products or recycling bins. Yes, it means "recycle." But what about the symbol where the top arrow points upward? What does it mean? This is what I'm going to talk about today: upcycling. It is a new trend in recycling.

Let me show you some examples. These are pieces of broken dishes. What would you do with them? Would you throw them in the trash? After looking at the next picture, you may change your mind.

One of the broken pieces has been turned into a lovely item. Isn't it beautiful?

What do you think this bag is made of?

You wouldn't believe the fact that this nice bag is made of hundreds of ring pulls from empty cans. As you can see, upcycling can turn waste into something new and useful.

The goal of upcycling is the same as that of recycling: to reduce waste by reusing old materials. However, upcycling has a greater emphasis on creative and artistic reuse. Upcycled items can be sold on the market as new products. That's why many people say upcycling turns "trash into treasure."

2번 지문

Now we're going to listen to three people involved in upcycling in different ways.

Tom (manufacturer, Switzerland)

We upcycle old sheets used for covering trucks into tough, eye-catching wallets. Because the used sheets are usually thrown away, we can get them very cheep. But our products, with their unique patterns, are sold at high prices. I think creative upcycling ideas can lead to a profitable business.

Marie (artist, France)

I definitely love upcycling, and it has awesome potential. Unwanted everyday items can be transformed into artwork. Whenever I see old furniture or empty bottles, I am always inspired. The fact that I can give them a whole new life thrills me. I hope that my artwork will open people's eyes to a new kind of beauty.

Yujin (student, Korea)

Last year, I got a new school bag as a gift from my uncle. It was cool-looking and unique. When I heard it was made out of old air bags, I was quite surprised. This got me interested in upcycling and eventually led me to join an upcycling club at school. Through the club, I made some products and learned plenty of upcycling tips. When I gave a paper bead bracelet as a gift to my best friend, she love it!

As you have heard, upcycling is widely acknowledged as a great new way to recycle waste.

Now, it's time to wrap up. Through upcycling, you can create beautiful artwork, make money, and help protect the environment. Even if you can't make upcycled products yourself, you can still help out by using them. Upcycling is much easier than you think.

Let's Make a Paper Bead Bracelet

1. On the paper, mark every 1 cm along one side.

2. On the opposite side, mark the first 0.5 cm. Then continue to mark every 1 cm starting from there.

3. Draw lines by connecting the marks on both sides as shown in the picture.

4. Cut along the lines to get long triangles.

5. Tape the base of the triangle to a straw.

6. Put a glue on the inner side of the triangle and wrap it tightly around the straw.

7. Cut the straw on both ends. Now you have made your first bead. Repeat as needed.

8. Thread the beads together on a piece of stretchy string. Tie both ends of the string together.

1번 지문

Mina is a high school student.

Her dream is to become a comics artist, so she joins an after-school art program. However, after a few weeks, she starts skipping classes. Mr. Jo, the art teacher, asks her to come to the art classroom for a talk.

Mr. Jo: Mina, I haven't seen you in class for a while.

Mina: I'm so sorry, sir. I wanted to come, but I couldn't.

Mr. Jo: Is there a problem?

Mina: Not really, but I have other things to do. I'm very busy these days. I wish I had more time.

Mr. Jo: Hmm, maybe the problem is not time but time management.

Mina: What do you mean?

Mr. Jo: Well, actually, I might have some suggestions.

Do you want to hear them?

Mina: I'd love to!

(Mr. Jo walks up to the board and draws a big square. He divides it into four blocks, with a number in each block.)

Mr. Jo: This table categorizes things by urgency and importance. The first block includes things that are urgent and important; the second, important but not urgent; the third, urgent but not important; and last, neither urgent nor important.

Mr. Jo: We usually don't have time for everything, so we must decide what we should stop or reduce. Now, out of the four blocks, which do you think we should give up first?

Mina: Well, maybe block 4. Things that are neither urgent nor important.

Mr. Jo: Right. Can you give me some examples?

Mina: Hmm. I'm not sure.

Mr. Jo: How about surfing the Web or checking social media? You're right. I waste too much time reading the latest gossip and keeping up with my friends' updates.

Mr. Jo: Maybe that's one reason you don't have enough time.

Mina: True. I'll do my best to stop.

Mr. Jo: Great! Now, let's think about block 3―things that are urgent but not important. Do you currently have anything urgent to do?

2번 지문

Mina: Well, as you know, I'm class president. And the classroom decorations should be done by the end of this week. There are lots of things to do: putting labels on lockers, designing a notice board, and buying cleaning materials.

Mr. Jo: Are they all important to you? I mean, do you have to do all of them on your own?

Mina: No. I think I can do them with other classmates_

Mr. Jo: That's right. They're not your sole responsibility. They're relatively less important to you because someone can do them for you. I think you should find classmates who can help you.

Mina: I got it! I should have asked for help from the beginning. I'll try to find classmates who can help me.

Mr. Jo: Excellent! Now, you know how to save time. Where will you spend the extra time you saved?

Mina: Block 1―things that are both urgent and important, like my math homework. It's due tomorrow.

Mr. Jo: Right. That is what you should do before anything else. But what about block 2?

Mina: Hmm, what could go in block 2? What is something important but not urgent?

Mr. Jo: They are things you must do regularly to make your life happier in the long run. They can be things like exercising or career planning. Didn't you say you wanted to be a comics artist in the future?

Mina: Yes, I did. I love drawing cartoons.

Mr. Jo: Okay, then what would you put in block 2?

Mina: Practicing drawing cartoons! Oh, I shouldn't have ever started skipping your classes.

Mr. Jo: People tend to ignore block 2. However, we should find time for those things, even when we're busy. After all, the point is not urgency but importance.

Mina: I'll keep that in mind.

Mr. Jo: Next time you are about to do anything, stop and think about this table. That way, you'll be able to manage your time better.

Mina: Okay, I will.

Thank you, sir!
