Technology changes how individuals and societies understand the concept of privacy. The fact that someone has a new ability to access information or watch the actions of another does not justify doing so. Rather, advances in technology require citizens and policy makers to consider how privacy protections should be expanded. For example, when cameras first became available for commercial and private use, nations and citizens struggled over whether new laws should be enacted to protect individuals from being photographed without their permission. The reconsideration of privacy brought about by this new technology re-affirmed a distinction between private and public spaces. It was determined by most cultures that people automatically gave consent to being seen ― and thus recorded ― once they voluntarily stepped into a public space. Although some people might be uncomfortable with the spread of surveillance cameras, citizens in most cultures have adjusted to the fact that giving up the right not to be observed in these circumstances causes less harm to the community than failing to have surveillance.

Although many people believe that e-cigarettes are harmless, studies have shown that this is not true. Compared with non-users, e-cigarette users are 71 percent more likely to suffer a stroke. They also have a 59 percent higher risk of having a heart attack and a 40 percent higher risk of developing heart disease. This may be because smoking e-cigarettes contributes to an increase in the fatty deposits found in the arteries. It also causes reactions that can interfere with the normal circulation of blood through the body. Eventually, this may trigger a heart attack or a stroke. This is actually the same dangerous pattern caused by smoking normal cigarettes. Therefore, to improve their health, people should stop smoking all kinds of cigarettes, including e-cigarettes.

Avoiding threats and potential losses was often a matter of life or death for early humans. Because of this, we now consider the prospect of loss to be more important than the possibility of gains. Life is much safer today, but our brains still work like those of our ancestors, which makes us prone to making irrational decisions. One example of this is the sunk cost fallacy. A sunk cost is an investment of time, money, or effort that you cannot recover. For example, imagine you watched the first 30 minutes of a movie in a theater before realizing it was terrible. What would you do? Many people would choose to keep watching, in order to justify their sunk cost ─ the time they already spent watching it and the money they spent on the ticket. It would be more rational, however, to spend the next 90 minutes doing something more enjoyable.

People involved in relationships can't avoid conflict. If the conflict is handled well, it can actually make the relationship stronger. If it is not, it can have negative effects, leading to frequent arguments and uncomfortable silences. One way to ensure you handle conflict appropriately is by being honest and open about how you feel and what you need. At the same time, you should accept and respect the feelings and needs of the other person. You can sympathize with other people better by imagining how they must be feeling. This will allow you to view the conflict from the other person's perspective. People don't always have to agree with one another. What makes us unique as human beings is that we all have different views ─ it is this diversity that helps make our relationships exciting and special.

We may need to change the way we view adolescence ─ the period when children become adults. Scientists in Australia now say adolescence can start as early as the age of 10 and continue until the age of 24. This is partly due to the fact that puberty is beginning earlier than it did in the past. It used to start around 14, but changes in nutrition mean it now starts sooner, sometimes at the age of 10. The reason the upper age of adolescence has increased is largely social. Young people now stay in school longer and delay marriage and parenthood. The scientists say that society must adjust to this wider range of adolescence by changing some laws. In many countries, people legally become adults at 18, but the actual adoption of adult responsibilities is occurring later. There are actually some big differences in the legal age of adulthood from country to country. In Indonesia, for example, it is 15, but in Singapore it is 21.

Anthropology compares different groups of people to better understand the wide range of human behavior. It doesn't judge other people's values or divide societies into categories like "underdeveloped" and "developed." However, anthropologists don't suspend all judgements about people's actions; for example, they won't defend violence committed in the name of a culture. Instead, they seek to understand why people act the way they do and how they view themselves. This is known as cultural relativism, and it's an essential tool for anthropologists. It sees societies as being qualitatively different from one another, each with its own inner logic. A society might rank low in terms of literacy, for example, but this may turn out to be completely irrelevant if the members of the society have no interest in books. Cultural relativists would never argue that one society is better than another.

Adam Smith pointed out that specialization, where each of us focuses on one specific skill, leads to a general improvement of everybody's well-being. The idea is simple and powerful. By specializing in just one activity ─ such as food raising, clothing production, or home construction ─ each worker gains mastery over the particular activity. Specialization makes sense, however, only if the specialist can subsequently trade his or her output with the output of specialists in other lines of activity. It would make no sense to produce more food than a household needs unless there is a market outlet to exchange that surplus food for clothing, shelter, and so forth. At the same time, without the ability to buy food on the market, it would not be possible to be a specialist home builder or clothing maker, since it would be necessary to farm for one's own survival. Thus Smith realized that the division of labor is limited by the extent of the market, whereas the extent of the market is determined by the degree of specialization.
