Sometimes, a project that you thought would be almost effortless turns out to be very difficult and draining. There are circumstances that may distract you: relationship problems or illnesses. The worst thing to do is beat yourself up for not getting everything done, for periodically procrastinating, or for slowing down from time to time. The time and energy you spend feeling guilty can extend a less-than-productive morning into a less-than-productive day. Even the most energetic and efficient people occasionally have off days. The thing that makes them good time managers is that they realize these are a part of life. They forgive themselves, make the necessary adjustments to their schedules, and move on. Instead of dwelling on what you haven't achieved, give yourself credit for what you have been able to do.

① A project expected to require little effort can unexpectedly become challenging and exhausting.

② Criticizing yourself for occasional procrastination or slowdowns is described as the worst response to unproductive periods.

③ The passage suggests that people should focus on dwelling on their achievements rather than on what remains unfinished.

④ Effective time managers accept that occasional off days are an inevitable aspect of life.

⑤ The passage advises making necessary schedule adjustments and continuing forward when productivity drops.

지문은 "Instead of dwelling on what you haven't achieved, give yourself credit for what you have been able to do"라고 서술한다.

따라서 사람들이 성취에 "집착하는 데 초점을 맞춰야 한다(should focus on dwelling on their achievements)"고 서술하는 선지가 있다면, 이는 지문의 조언을 왜곡한 것이다.

"Instead of dwelling on what you haven't achieved, give yourself credit for what you have been able to do."

③번은 이를 "성취에 집착하는 데 초점을 맞춰야 한다(focus on dwelling on their achievements)"로 서술하여, 지문이 부정적으로 사용한 "dwelling on"이라는 표현을 성취에까지 잘못 적용했다.

In one study, advanced graduate students at the University of Chicago were asked to rate research reports dealing with issues on which they already had an opinion. Unknown to the volunteers, the research reports were all fake. For each issue, half the volunteers saw a report presenting data that supported one side, while the other half saw a report in which the data supported the opposite camp. But it was only the numbers that differed ─ the research methodology and presentation were identical in both cases. When asked, most subjects denied that their assessment of the research depended on whether the data supported their prior opinion. But they were wrong. The researcher's analysis showed that they had indeed judged the studies that supported their beliefs to be more methodologically sound and clearly presented than the otherwise identical studies that opposed their beliefs ─ and the effect was stronger for those with strong prior beliefs. When it comes to our perception, as a proverb says, the skin is nearer than the shirt.

What makes us so adaptable? In one word, culture ─ our ability to learn from others, to copy, imitate, share, and improve. When humans learned to communicate using oral and, later, written language, ideas, knowledge, and practices ─ how to make a fishhook, build a boat, fashion a spear, sing a song, carve a god ─ could replicate and combine like genes. But unlike genes, they could jump from one mind to another across distances of time and space. Culture freed humans from the limitations of their biology; according to evolutionary biologist Mark Pagel, when humans discovered culture, they achieved a momentous shift in the balance of power "between our genes and our minds." Humans became the only species to acquire guidance on how to live from the accumulated knowledge of their ancestors, rather than just from their DNA.

Customer to customer e-commerce (C2C e-commerce) is one in which one individual wants to sell an item to another. The items are usually used items, collector's items such as stamps or coins, or antiques. The seller posts the description of the item and the expected price of the item on a web site maintained by a company which acts as a broker. An individual who visits this site looking for items may be interested in the item advertised for sale. The buyer and seller then discuss the item and a price. The price is mutually settled between the two parties by exchanging messages by e-mail. The broker then arranges to collect the item from the seller and despatches it to the buyer and collects payment for the item and a fee from the buyer and the seller for services. The primary advantage of this system is that the Internet enables two individuals located at distant places to come together to buy and sell through an intermediary's web address.

The fantasies of children and grown-ups, sometimes called daydreams, are always concerned with the future. These 'castles in the air' are the goal of their activity, built up in fictional form as models for real activity. Studies of childhood fantasies show clearly that the striving for power plays the predominant role. Children express their ambition in their daydreams. Most of their fantasies begin with the words 'when I grow up', and so on. There are many adults who live as though they too were not yet grown up. The clear emphasis on the striving for power indicates again that the psyche can develop only when a certain goal has been set; in our civilization, this goal involves social recognition and significance. An individual never stays long with any neutral goal, for the communal life of humankind is accompanied by constant self-evaluation giving rise to the desire for superiority and the hope of success in competition. The fantasies of children almost always involve situations in which the child exercises power.

Pet food used to be about selecting a small, medium, or large bag of whatever your local feed or grocery store stocked. Today, choosing pet food from among the hundreds of varieties in the $17 billion United States market can be a complicated task. Beef, duck, vegetables, and salmon are part of today's pet diets. Once created to profit from human food manufacturing waste, the pet food industry now makes products with human-grade ingredients that sell well because people want something better for their beloved animal companions. The number of people purchasing pet food with human-grade ingredients is on the increase. As a result, pets truly do increase the burden on agriculture, because they are no longer eating the "leftover" products.

As far as we know, the best way to reap the benefits of plants is by consuming them in their natural forms. When new research reveals a benefit of eating particular fruits and vegetables, many people are quick to attribute that benefit to one particular ingredient. For instance, studies have found that consuming fruits and vegetables rich in carotenoids reduces the risk of developing several kinds of cancer. This finding stirred up a lot of interest in beta-carotene (vitamin A) and led many people to start taking vitamin A supplements to reduce their risk of cancer. But fruits and vegetables contain at least forty different carotenoids, often at higher levels than beta-carotene. We cannot just assume that one ingredient will produce the same result in isolation as it will when it is part of a complex package like a plant. It's not just an issue of isolating one component and packaging it in a pill at high doses.

The more animals are exposed to a fear-provoking stimuli, the sooner they will become habituated to it. For this reason, shell-crackers should be used sparingly and propane cannons should be set to fire only once or twice per hour. Ideally, a propane cannon or other auditory stimuli should fire only when wildlife are close to it. One way to accomplish this is to have the noisemaker remotely controlled by someone who fires it only when an animal is nearby. This, however, is too labor-intensive to be practical for most wildlife control problems. An alternative is to connect a noisemaker to a motion detector, auditory sensor, or infrared sensor that activates the noisemaker whenever an animal is detected. For instance, Belant et al. discovered that deer habituated less rapidly to motion-activated gas exploders than to those that fired at timed intervals.

Psychologist James Pennebaker has conducted many studies showing that when people write about traumas they've gone through ─ such as physical abuse or the death of a loved one ─ they often experience reduced levels of stress hormones, strengthened immune systems, and a decrease in doctor visits. Participants in Pennebaker's studies have seen improvements after only two or three writing sessions of 20 minutes each. In a similar vein, communication scholars have shown that when people are in distress, writing about their positive feelings for a loved one can accelerate their recovery. In one experiment, for instance, participants were put through a series of stressful tasks, such as mentally solving complicated math problems under time constraints and watching video clips of married couples fighting. These tasks elevated their levels of a hormone called cortisol, which the body produces when people are under stress. The participants were then assigned to one of three conditions. Participants in the first group were instructed to write a letter expressing their positive feelings to someone they loved. The second group merely thought about a loved one but didn't put their feelings into words. Finally, the third group did nothing for 20 minutes. The researchers found that when people wrote about their affectionate feelings, their cortisol levels returned to normal the most quickly. Just thinking about a loved one didn't provide any more benefit than doing nothing. Only those participants who let out their feelings in written form recovered quickly from their elevated stress.
