The passport control line was short and the inspectors looked relaxed; except the inspector at my window. He seemed to want to model the seriousness of the task at hand for the other inspectors. Maybe that's why I felt uneasy when he studied my passport more carefully than I expected. "You were here in September," he said. "Why are you back so soon?" "I came in September to prepare to return this month," I replied with a trembling voice, considering if I missed any Italian regulations. "For how long?" he asked. "One month, this time," I answered truthfully. I knew it was not against the rules to stay in Italy for three months. "Enjoy your stay," he finally said, as he stamped my passport. Whew! As I walked away, the burden I had carried, even though I did nothing wrong, vanished into the air. My shoulders, once weighed down, now stretched out with comfort.

Today was the busiest day I have had in weeks, so when I got home, I was ready to treat myself to something special. I decided to order my favorite fried chicken as a small comfort. I had been craving it all day, imagining the crispy coating and juicy meat that would be my reward for surviving such a brutal day. Thirty minutes later, the doorbell rang. My mouth was watering as I hurried to the door, ready to finally enjoy this one bright spot in my terrible day. However, when I opened the delivery bag, I found sweet-and-sour pork, fried rice, and spring rolls. My heart sank instantly. I checked my phone to see if I had made a mistake, but I clearly ordered chicken. After such a stressful day, this felt like the final blow.

Today is the final day of my summer exchange program. I remember packing for this trip four weeks ago like it was yesterday. At that time, I was sure that I was about to experience the hardest month of my entire life. Of course, I was completely wrong. At the start of the program, I barely knew the other students from my school who were traveling with me. Now they all feel like brothers and sisters. And the town we're staying in is much better than I expected. The air is clean, and the local people are friendly. I also made lots of new friends at the school I've been studying at. I've had more great experiences in the past four weeks than I can even mention. Time flew by too fast, but I will always remember my time here and the people that I met.

Signing up for clubs at my school is like a fight for survival. When I arrived at the gym, half the school had gotten there before me. Each club had a table, and many of them had already put up "FILLED" signs. I headed straight for the art club's table, but I was too late. I just stood there, stunned. Painting was the only thing I really enjoyed. Suddenly, someone grabbed my arm. It was my friend Liz. "Come on," she shouted. "The theater club isn't full yet." I pulled my arm back and told Liz I wasn't interested in acting. "I know," she replied, "but they need someone to paint the sets." My mouth dropped open. It would be just as good as the art club! Hand in hand, Liz and I ran to the theater club's table to sign up together.

Standing on her balcony, Angela could feel the approach of summer for the first time that year. She usually awaited the change of seasons with excitement, joyfully welcoming the dramatic shift in the weather. But this year was different. With the end of winter, Angela's days as a university student would be ending as well. She would be moving to a new city and starting her first job, and she was scared that she wasn't ready. There were too many unknowns ahead of her. Glancing at the bird cage on the balcony, Angela saw that her pet canary had noticed the change in the air as well. It hopped back and forth, alert and ready for something new to come. Seeing this, Angela realized that she felt the same way ─ she was ready for a positive change in her life. Things were going to be different, but they were going to be better. She could feel it deep inside her heart.

I left my peaceful countryside home to start a new life in the city. My destination was one of the biggest urban areas in the world. I had bought a one-way ticket on the new high-speed railway, and I was amazed by how quickly the landscape flew past. Back home, most people walked or rode a bike. They would have been amazed to see me speeding toward my new home in luxurious comfort. I took a moment to marvel at the wonders of human progress. But when I arrived in the city, how overwhelming the crowds seemed! The city was the industrial heart of the world, but it was also filled with exhausted workers, weary faces, and people without homes. I wandered aimlessly, trying to push all of that from my mind. It felt like progress must be a cruel joke if it was built upon such suffering.

I stood on my grandmother's front porch, looking at the potted plants and the old rocking chair where I used to spend summer afternoons sipping sweet iced tea. My grandmother made the best iced tea, better than any I've had since. Sometimes I would read novels or just sit there listening to the sounds of the birds in the trees and my grandmother in the kitchen, humming an old song as she cooked. I hadn't been back in years, but just standing there made all the memories come rushing back as if they had happened yesterday. I couldn't help but smile as I stepped into the house. None of the furniture had changed. It was a bit older, maybe a little dustier, but exactly as I remembered it from my childhood. I headed up the stairs to check out my old bedroom.

Joshua had spent ten weeks crafting a presentation for an upcoming meeting. He had worked very hard on analyzing data, making beautiful plots and projections, and he had often stayed in the office past midnight polishing his presentation. He was delighted with the outcome and happily e-mailed the presentation to his boss, who was going to make the presentation at the all-important meeting. His boss e-mailed him back a few hours later: "Sorry, Joshua, but just yesterday we learned that the deal is off. I did look at your presentation, and it is an impressive and fine piece of work. Well done." Joshua realized that his presentation would never see the light of day. The fact that all his effort had served no ultimate purpose created a deep rift between him and his job. He'd quickly gone from feeling useful and happy in his work to feeling dissatisfied and that his efforts were in vain.
