"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder." While this statement may be true, some works of art remain beautiful in the eyes of many "beholders." Although such masterpieces are unique, they have certain qualities in common. Pablo Picasso's Three Musicians can be interpreted only through an understanding of his style. Even the experienced art lover can be unsure as to what he sees. But ─ comprehend it or not ─ he is likely to be intrigued by it. Equally appealing is Claude Monet's painting of a Japanese bridge over a pond full of water lilies. Even a brief glance leaves the admirer with no doubt as to what he is viewing. Yet each painting is a masterpiece. Each indefinitely attracts the viewer, drawing his very soul to them. Each expresses an experience common to mankind ─ not just of a certain era, but of all eras.
① Some artworks are considered beautiful by a large number of people despite the subjectivity of beauty.
② Monet's painting of a Japanese bridge requires deep knowledge of Impressionism to identify the subject matter.
③ Picasso's Three Musicians can only be understood through familiarity with his artistic approach.
④ Each masterpiece has an enduring power that continues to captivate viewers across generations.
⑤ Great works of art share the quality of expressing universal human experiences that transcend time.
지문은 Monet의 그림에 대해 "Even a brief glance leaves the admirer with no doubt as to what he is viewing"이라고 서술한다.

"Even a brief glance leaves the admirer with no doubt as to what he is viewing."

A taste for Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay or a liking for Bordeaux or Zinfandel can indicate more than just a preference in wines. It could also reveal personality traits. New research by scientists in Australia and Britain showed that drinkers who preferred a sweet taste in wine were more likely to be impulsive, while those who chose dry varieties had greater openness. "Participants with a sweet taste preference were significantly higher in impulsiveness than their dry preference counterparts," Anthony J. Saliba, of Charles Sturt University in Wagga Wagga, Australia, and his colleagues said in the report. They said apart from impulsiveness and openness, no other personality trait was significantly different between the two groups.

In organizations, there is no simple cause-and-effect relationship between introducing a management technique and getting an improved business result. This contrasts with other spheres of activity where simple causal relationships do seem to operate. Hit the nail with the hammer, and it goes into the wood. Show a dog food, and it salivates. This kind of simple cause-and-effect logic can be misleading if applied to the complex world of organizations, where it is difficult to trace single effects to single causes. Uncontrollable outside factors can sink a wonderfully designed team (a hurricane just swept the entire inventory out to sea). Or they can rescue one whose design was so bad that failure seemed assured (the firm that was competing for the contract just went belly-up). In organizations, multiple causes are operating at the same time and interacting with each over an extended period of time.

In contrast to popular belief, integrity isn't an unchanging trait: Someone who has been fair and honest in the past won't necessarily be fair and honest in the future. To understand why, we must first free ourselves of the notion that people wrestle with "good" and "evil" impulses. Except in cases of serious psychopathy, the mind doesn't work that way. Rather, it focuses on two types of gains: short-term and long-term. And it's the choice between them that typically dictates integrity in any particular situation. Individuals who break a trust ─ by promising work they won't or can't deliver, for instance ─ may reap an immediate reward, but they diminish the likelihood of accumulating greater benefits from exchange and cooperation with the same partner (and perhaps others) in the future. It is the weighing of immediate rewards against potential costs further down the road that constitutes the heart of integrity related decisions, and this depends a great deal on the situation and the parties involved.

Considering the volume of information that people in our contemporary society must keep track of, a certain amount of notetaking and storing of information in books is unavoidable. But the tendency away from recalling is growing beyond all sensible proportions. One can easily and best observe in oneself that writing things down diminishes one's power of remembering, but some everyday examples may help to illustrate the point. One such example occurs in stores. Today a salesclerk will rarely do a simple addition of two or three items in his or her head, but instead will enter the numbers into a machine. Our schools provide another example. Teachers can observe that the students who diligently record every word of the lecture often do not perform as well at recall as those who trusted their capacity to understand and, hence, can produce at least the essentials.

According to Thomas Eriksen of the University of Oslo, author of Tyranny of the Moment, our modern electronic lifestyle systematically favors fast time activities that require instant, urgent responses (email, cell phone calls, etc.). Such stimuli tend to crowd out slow time activities such as reflection, play and long-term love relationships. This dynamic has a particularly unfortunate effect in academia, which is supposed to be somewhat insulated from the larger society so that students and scholars can think more broadly and with longer range perspectives. But in fact, universities mirror the rest of society, and the dwindling time to think is as much an issue within the academy as anywhere else. As instrumental, short-term, applied goals take center-stage, our society has less access to the wisdom and complexity that deep, reflective thinking can provide. This is a major loss.

Seasonal weather conditions are always a concern for greenhouse gardeners. The climate determines not only how and when the greenhouse will be used but what type of structure to build in the first place. For example, in a cold-weather climate that frequently experiences heavy snowfall, a high-pitched roof might be ideal because it can prevent the build-up of ice and snow by efficiently helping them to slide off. In a location that sees less snowfall but gets cold, strong winds, a sun-heated pit, which is a greenhouse with the majority of the structure housed below ground, might be the best choice, because it is naturally insulated and requires less heat to operate. The same type of structure might not be practical for a more temperate area.

Labeling people according to our first impressions is an inevitable part of the perception process. These labels are a way of making interpretations. "She seems cheerful.", "He seems sincere.", "They sound awfully conceited." If they're accurate, impressions like these can be useful ways of deciding how to respond best to people in the future. Problems arise, however, when the labels we attach are inaccurate, because after we form an opinion of someone, we tend to hang on to it and make any conflicting information fit our image. Suppose, for instance, you mention the name of your new neighbor to a friend. "Oh, I know him," your friend replies. "He seems nice at first, but it's all an act." Perhaps, this appraisal is off-base. Whether the judgment is accurate or not, after you accept your friend's evaluation, it will probably influence the way you respond to the neighbor. You'll look for examples of the insincerity you've heard about ─ and you'll probably find them.

According to evolutionary psychology, we are motivated most deeply, although unconsciously, to survive and ensure the continuation of our species. Therefore, we are naturally attracted to anything that will help us do that. For example, people may be drawn to others who display signs of health and vitality, since these traits suggest stability and strength. They may also value individuals who can offer reliability and support in social life. This is, in part, because such qualities often reflect experience and emotional maturity. Furthermore, people tend to be attracted to individuals with social confidence or leadership, for similar reasons. Psychologists have found that, in social profiles, people tend to highlight qualities they believe others will value, such as appearance, confidence, or reliability. From an evolutionary perspective, such tendencies can be understood as adaptive behaviors that have helped humans survive and thrive.

Duke University professor Dan Ariely describes a clever experiment. A group of people are given an intelligence test, but half of them are "accidentally" shown a response sheet, allowing them to look up correct answers before recording their own. Needless to say, they score above the rest. Next, everybody is asked to predict their grades on the next IQ test, in which there will be absolutely no cheat sheets ─ and those who predict correctly will get paid. Surprisingly, the half of the group that scored higher with cheat sheets predicted higher results for the next test. The cheaters wanted to believe they were very smart, even though their incorrect predictions of success would cost them money.
