The current food crisis not only deprives vulnerable people of their right to food, but it also benefits huge international corporations that monopolize the food chain. Just ten corporations not only control one-third of the US$ 23 billion commercial seed market, but also 80 per cent of the US$ 28 billion global pesticide market. In order to change the situation for local farmers, we need to change the global paradigm for agricultural policy-making and give absolute priority to investments in small gardens that provide food for individual families and local production, including irrigation, infrastructure, seeds, pesticides, and so on. Peasant farmers and small-scale agriculture have been neglected for too long. The issue of the exclusion of peasants from the development process and the neglect of their rights should be immediately addressed. National governments and international organizations should give absolute priority to investments in small-scale agriculture and local production.

① The ongoing food crisis creates conditions that are advantageous for large corporations dominating the food supply system.

② Achieving meaningful change for local farmers requires reducing the emphasis on small-scale gardens and local production efforts.

③ A handful of corporations exercise considerable control over both the commercial seed market and the global pesticide market.

④ Small-scale farming practices have not received sufficient attention or support from policymakers for an extended period.

⑤ National governments and international bodies are urged to make local agricultural investment their foremost concern.

지문은 "give absolute priority to investments in small gardens... and local production"이라고 명시한다.

"We need to change the global paradigm for agricultural policy-making and give absolute priority to investments in small gardens that provide food for individual families and local production."

The advantages of personal contact include experiences we can't consciously register. In a shared space, people plug into what the psychologist Daniel Goleman has called "neural WiFi," "a feedback loop that crosses the skin-and-skull barrier between bodies." When scientists videotape conversations and slow them down to watch frame by frame, they detect synchronies between nonverbal elements ─ a shared rhythm very much like the beat that guides an improvisation in jazz. The movements themselves are coordinated to within a fraction of a second ─ our brains are taking in data on the order of milli- or microseconds. But conscious processing of information happens in the comparatively sluggish scale of seconds. When two people talk to each other, writes Goleman, "our own thoughts can't possibly track the complexity of the dance."

The bristlecone pine, which has a documented maximum lifespan of over 5,000 years, is one of the longest-lived organisms in the world. But such longevities are attained only by trees that live in the harsh, windswept peaks of the White Mountains in California. Individuals of the same species that live in more protected environments have significantly shorter lives, on the order of about 1,000 years. This lifespan is still extraordinarily long by any standard, but the 80% reduction in longevity is striking. A harsh environment is ideal for extended longevity because it results in fewer parasites and smaller amounts of flammable underbrush, which leads to accidental death. The shortness of the growing season may also play a role, although much evidence suggests that these long-lived trees have an apparently unlimited, or at least a very large, capacity for continuous cell division.

It is wise not to rely too much on objective performance measures. Such measures are often easy to manipulate. For example, it is hard to imagine a more objectively measurable task than the pole vault: the higher the bar when you clear it, the better the performance. Yet an attempt to pay for performance was outsmarted by the great pole vaulter Sergei Bubka. He was given a cash bonus every time he broke the world record, and so he was motivated to beat his previous marks by the smallest increase possible rather than try for his best jump. Bubka often broke the record by a single centimeter. The bar steadily crept upward until the mid-1990s, when Bubka was past his prime and was unable to beat his most recent height. Only Bubka and his coaches know what he had been able to achieve in private practice sessions.

If you want your children to be well-disciplined, then you have to be consistent. If your children know that you're liable to overlook their bad behavior if you're tired, distracted, or because you sometimes just feel sorry for them, then they won't know how to properly act every time. Though it may be hard, this is the only way to ensure that you are taken seriously and that your child will understand your guidelines. For example, every time your child breaks a toy, then he/she has to earn a new one by helping out around the house ─ don't give in one time when he/she breaks a toy just because you really feel sorry for him/her on that particular day. If you normally don't let your child go to McDonald's more than once a week, don't let the child go just when he/she's throwing a public tantrum. Though it may be embarrassing to suffer through a public tantrum, it's better than teaching your child that he/she can always get what he/she wants if he/she just waits to throw a tantrum in public.

Trust is the key element for counselors who work with children. Without an adequate level of trust, the therapeutic relationship will be hindered. Sometimes, because of the importance of this issue, we need to progress very slowly at first. In initial sessions, we might allow time for a young child to play freely. If the counselor begins by talking about the child's problems, the child may become stressed and refuse to speak. Instead, children need time to get ready, so counselors working with children need patience. Only when they are ready to open themselves up can children be invited to tell their story. When inviting the child, the counselor doesn't try to hurry the therapeutic process but allows the child opportunities to express themselves and to explore feelings and issues which may be troubling for them. The counselor doesn't question, but instead invites the child to share what they wish.

Cultural messages shape many communication behaviors, and listening is no exception. In particular, listening behavior appears to be affected by how people in a given culture think about the importance of time. In individualistic cultures, people often think of time as a resource. Americans, for instance, commonly say that "time is money," and they think of time as a commodity that can be saved, spent, and wasted. People in such cultures typically place a high value on efficiency, and they expect others to do the same. They value direct, straightforward communication, and listeners become impatient with speakers who don't "get to the point." In contrast, collectivistic cultures such as Korea emphasize social harmony over efficiency. As part of their listening behavior, people in these cultures often pay close attention to nonverbal behaviors and contextual cues to determine the meaning of a speaker's message.

The process of job advancement in the field of sports is often compared to the shape of a pyramid. At the wide base are many jobs with youth or high school athletic teams, while at the narrow tip are the few, highly-coveted jobs with professional organizations. Thus there are many sports jobs in total, but the competition becomes increasingly tough as one works his or her way up. The salaries of various positions correspond to this pyramid model. For example, high school football and basketball coaches are often teachers who get paid a little extra for their after-class work. But coaches of the same sports at big universities can become national celebrities who earn more than $1 million a year, equal to the salaries of college presidents. One level higher up are the National Football League and the National Basketball Association, where head coaches often receive many times more than their best-paid campus counterparts.

Plants are acutely aware of the world around them. They are aware of their visual environment; they differentiate between red, blue, and UV lights and respond accordingly. They are aware of aromas surrounding them and respond to minute quantities of volatile compounds wafting in the air. Plants know when they are being touched and can distinguish different tactile senses. They are aware of gravity: they can change their shapes to ensure that shoots grow up and roots grow down. And plants are aware of their past: they remember past infections and the conditions they've weathered and then modify their current physiology based on these memories. If a plant is aware, what does this mean for us regarding our own interactions with the green world? A plant is aware of its environment, and people are part of this environment. But it's not aware of the myriad gardeners and plant biologists who develop what they consider to be personal relationships with their plants. While these relationships may be meaningful to the caretaker, they are not dissimilar to the relationship between a child and her imaginary friend; the flow of meaning is one-way. I've heard world-famous scientists and undergraduate research students alike use anthropomorphic language with abandon as they describe their plants as "not looking too happy" when mildew has taken over their leaves or as "satisfied" after they've been watered. These terms represent our own subjective assessment of a plant's decidedly unemotional physiological status. For all the rich sensory input that plants and people perceive, only humans render this input as an emotional landscape.
