You're supposed to take a quick trip to the supermarket, but two hours later you come home with tons of groceries. About 60% of supermarket purchases are not planned. One reason for this is the growing size of supermarket carts. This means people can put more in their carts without noticing. According to a study, doubling the shopping cart size causes a 40% increase in purchases. Another reason is product placement. The first items shoppers look at are those at eye level, which causes them to sell better. Knowing this, supermarkets place the more expensive options on the middle shelves. Finally, seeing signs with "limited time" offers may cause shoppers to buy more of that product than they planned. By creating a sense of urgency, supermarkets make people purchase more than they need. In reality, most "limited time" offers continue until all of the product has been sold.

Imagine a piece of toast with jam on it falls off a table. Some people say if it lands on the jam side, it is bad luck. But let's look at the situation logically. The factors include gravity and the height of the table it fell off, as well as the size of the toast and the angle at which it fell, which determine the motion of the toast's rotation. Whether the toast rotates to a position in which the jam is touching the floor or not depends on the force that causes the toast to rotate. Assuming that the table is about one meter tall, the toast will rotate about half a turn. This means the jam side of the toast will now be facing down. That your toast lands on the jam side is therefore not bad luck. It is just simple science.

To monitor our surroundings is to focus on what's outside of ourselves: what we see, hear, smell, feel, and perhaps even taste. But sometimes what really marks a place is something less specific ─ a feeling within us. An interesting example emerged from a study of subway passenger behavior. Researchers trying to understand why people sit where they sit or stand where they stand in subway and metro trains examined the factors that shape the way riders used and navigated that space in different situations. One of their findings involved the reasons many riders like to plant themselves close to the train's doors. Partly this was the obvious convenience of being able to exit more quickly. But it was shaped partly by a more abstract sensation ─ the desire to avoid the sometimes uncomfortable feeling of accidentally making eye contact with seated passengers. We can't see feelings ─ but they're very real, and they influence our experience of the world.
