The goal of a reputable, scholarly biography is simply to provide the facts in a chronological order. In this way, the reader can learn about the subject's life without the distracting input of the biographer and the potentially dangerous influence of subjectivity. This represents the pinnacle of biographical writing, and the manifestation of the subject's life as science. This scientific method implies that subjectivity could and should be eliminated, but is this even a possibility or just a fallacy? An author cannot remain fully detached and impartial to the subject, as if they were not already somehow invested in the matter, or they probably wouldn't have begun to undertake such a task. The biographer will inevitably begin the process with their own interpretations and preconceived notions, and even if they aim to create an objective biography, these notions will inevitably influence their writings.
① A scholarly biography aims to present facts chronologically, free from the biographer's subjective input.
② The passage characterizes the ideal of objective biography writing as the subject's life treated as science.
③ A biographer's personal disinterest in the subject ensures a more balanced and impartial account.
④ Biographers inevitably carry their own interpretations and preconceived notions into the writing process.
⑤ Even with the goal of objectivity, a biographer's existing ideas will unavoidably shape their work.
지문은 "An author cannot remain fully detached and impartial to the subject, as if they were not already somehow invested in the matter, or they probably wouldn't have begun to undertake such a task"라고 서술한다.

"An author cannot remain fully detached and impartial to the subject, as if they were not already somehow invested in the matter, or they probably wouldn't have begun to undertake such a task."

A social break is a pause or intermission, from work or other activities, to spend time with others in a social setting. This is often an intentional break, such as having lunch with colleagues. For some introverts, this can be a terrifying situation because they're not interested in socializing. If you're an introvert, spending time away from the bustle of friends and peers can be appealing. It can even be refreshing. Nevertheless, research points towards the power of others in making our break time as effective as possible. A study found social breaks ─ when taken with friends ─ to be effective at reducing stress and improving mood. Results showed these impacts to be absent from solitary breaks. So, like it or not, taking breaks with others is beneficial.

Altruism ─ unselfish concern for the welfare of others ─ presents sociobiology and evolutionary theory in general with a very real difficulty. For writers like Edward Wilson, the behaviour patterns of species and individuals are totally susceptible to biological explanation; some creatures are altruistic because they are driven by their genes to sacrifice themselves for the well-being of others. For example, a small bird will give a warning cry when a predator approaches, and so risk its life to safeguard its fellows. The trouble is that, in Wilson's words, 'fallen heroes do not have children.' If altruism is rooted in genes, the individuals with those genes would disappear. Only those possessing selfish genes would survive. However, altruism yet exists: how can evolutionary theory explain this? Wilson suggests that continued altruism is due to the evolutionary motivation of genes to defend and protect the species gene pool.

In 1969, when John was twenty-three, he taught briefly at a Navajo Indian boarding school in Shiprock, New Mexico. His third-grade students were among the poorest children in America, possessing little more than the clothes on their backs. The school had few toys or other sources of entertainment. Yet John never heard the children say they were bored. They were continually making up their own games. They were, at the age of ten, happy and well-adjusted children. That Christmas, John went home to visit his family. He remembers the scene, a floor full of packages under the tree. His own ten-year-old brother opened a dozen or so of them, quickly moving from one to the next. A few days later, John found his brother and a friend watching TV, the Christmas toys tossed aside in his brother's bedroom. Both boys complained to John that they had nothing to do. "We're bored," they proclaimed. For John, it was a clear indication that children's happiness doesn't come from possessions.

One unspoken truth about creativity ─ it isn't about wild talent so much as it is about productivity. To find a few ideas that work, you need to try a lot that don't. It's a pure numbers game. Geniuses don't necessarily have a higher success rate than other creators; they simply do more ─ and they do a range of different things. They have more successes and more failures. That goes for teams and companies too. It's impossible to generate a lot of good ideas without also generating a lot of bad ideas. The thing about creativity is that at the outset, you can't tell which ideas will succeed and which will fail. So the only thing you can do is try to fail faster so that you can move onto the next idea.

Prior to the Second World War, nation-states regulated their economic and fiscal affairs primarily as domestic matters; however, in the post-war era we have witnessed a huge expansion and intensification of economic interdependence. As a result, the global economy is acutely vulnerable to disruption by the malfunction of any single nation-state's fiscal-political system; a serious malfunction can trigger a chain reaction known commonly as the 'domino effect.' Such a disruptive event occurred in 1997 when Thailand, with a relatively small national economy, suffered a financial collapse which touched off sufficient uncertainty among investors that they pulled their money out of neighbouring Malaysia, Indonesia, and South Korea. The resulting destabilization of these national economies hastened the 'Asian Economic Crisis' and sparked a global recession. Increasingly, national institutions cannot handle emerging economic problems; this has prompted an urgent call for effective international regulatory institutions.

When it comes to dealing with relational challenges wisely, the starting point is always your relationship with yourself. If you don't have self-awareness and an appreciation of who you are as a human being, you'll find that your relationships are going to be fraught with frustrations. By understanding your own reactions and "hot buttons," you can better understand others. By knowing your most characteristic way of dealing with all your life's issues and challenges, you'll get a better picture of how your personal orientation mixes with the orientations of others. You'll know why you get along with certain types of people and not with others; you'll know why certain people drive you up the wall while you find others a delight.

What makes a story effective? Any Hollywood writer will tell you that attention is a scarce resource. Scientists liken attention to a spotlight. We are only able to shine it on a narrow area. If that area seems less interesting than some other area, our attention wanders. In fact, using one's attentional spotlight is metabolically costly, so we use it sparingly. This is why you can drive on the freeway and talk on the phone or listen to music at the same time. Your attentional spotlight is dim, so you can absorb multiple informational streams. You can do this until the car in front of you jams on its brakes and your attentional spotlight illuminates fully to help you avoid an accident. From a story-telling perspective, the way to keep an audience's attention is to continually increase the tension in the story.

As Neill wrote in his influential book Summerhill, "A child is innately wise and realistic. If left to himself without adult guidance of any kind, he will develop as far as he is able to develop." Neill and his colleagues of the 1960s and 1970s believed that schools should abandon examinations, grades, curricula, and even books. Though few schools took it to that extreme, the movement left a mark on educational practice. For example, in the method of reading instruction known as Whole Language, children are not taught which letter corresponds to which sound but are immersed in a book-rich environment where reading skills are expected to blossom spontaneously. In the philosophy of mathematics instruction known as constructivism, children are not drilled with arithmetic tables but are enjoined to rediscover mathematical truths on their own by working out problems in groups. Both methods fare badly when students' learning is measured objectively, but advocates of such methods tend to disdain standardized testing.

In a study, Cass Sunstein, a professor at Harvard, and some of his colleagues brought together two groups of people who share the same belief system: liberals from Boulder, Colorado, and conservatives from Colorado Springs. In their respective groups, each was asked to deliberate on three topics: civil partnerships, affirmative action and climate change. But before the discussions began, individual participants recorded their private opinions on each topic. And then the groups were mixed up and encouraged to discuss their views. The group deliberations were consistently respectful, engaged and substantive, but when they were finished, conservatives from Colorado Springs who had been neutral on a climate-change treaty now opposed it. Boulder liberals who had felt somewhat positive about civil partnerships became firmly convinced of their merit.
