The quest for joy and happiness is a universal desire. It is unfortunate, however, that people so often believe that the search will be entirely fulfilled by finding the perfect job, acquiring some new gadget, losing weight, or maintaining an image. The problem inherent in looking outward for sources of happiness is that focusing on what you do not have or what you are not inevitably leads to unhappiness. It is said that the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. When you have stopped comparing yourself and your assets to others, you will be able to recognize that to others, you are on the more blessed side. Learning to live in the moment and enjoying your personal lot can be a source of profound contentment.

① The desire to pursue joy and happiness is shared by all people.

② Many people mistakenly think that happiness can be fully achieved through external conditions such as a perfect job or new possessions.

③ Focusing on what one lacks or fails to be creates an inherent problem that inevitably results in dissatisfaction.

④ Once people stop comparing themselves to others, they can come to see that they are actually on the more fortunate side.

⑤ Enjoying life in the present moment has little connection with achieving genuine contentment.

지문은 "Learning to live in the moment and enjoying your personal lot can be a source of profound contentment"라고 서술한다.

"Learning to live in the moment and enjoying your personal lot can be a source of profound contentment."

Interactions between people and environmental features have spatial dimensions that are often overlooked. Our impact on resource supplies, such as forests, fish stocks, and the various minerals and metals used to make the things that we consume, happens in particular places. Often the environmental impacts of our consumption and waste generation are distanced from us, and we do not experience them directly. The demand for diamonds as a symbol of love in North America, Europe, and Japan is linked to negative and violent impacts in diamond-producing, former European colonies of West Africa. Similarly, although we may fault China for its unabated greenhouse gas emissions, the industrial productivity there, enabled in part by low environmental standards, provides inexpensive goods to consumers around the world. Consumption in richer parts of the world is often both spatially and cognitively distant from its negative impacts, whether it is the mining of materials for batteries in hybrid cars or the dumping of toxic electronic waste in poor countries desperate for a source of income. If we can't see it, we don't think about it.

At Facebook, Randi Zuckerberg told her team that she was changing the name of their group from "Consumer Marketing" to "Creative Marketing." Despite the fact that it seemed like a small change, it had an instant impact on the group. Immediately, the members redefined themselves as a creative hub of the company, even though nobody else in the firm knew about the name change. Within a few days, the team reorganized the space, bringing in new furniture and supplies and designing a media wall to showcase their creative accomplishments. They started coming up with more innovative ideas and suggested new projects that reflected their newly defined role in the company. It became abundantly clear that the team was incredibly creative, but that they hadn't thought that it was their primary role to generate new ideas. The change in their name gave them explicit permission to exercise their imagination.

Higher density living in cities means that fewer people have their own garden spaces and that gardens in modern homes are constantly becoming smaller. This is one reason for the importance of maintaining public gardens and integrating garden spaces into new developments. Many of the benefits provided by gardens are available for all to enjoy in public gardens and parks and these venues are often the scene of weddings, parties, and family get-togethers of all sorts. Public gardens provide us with opportunities for recreation, contemplation, education, and inspiration. Their importance to the community and to the environment cannot be overstated and will only grow as higher density living deprives more people of private garden spaces. Whether it's as a venue to socialize with friends, play sport, practice yoga, meditate, picnic, explore, play; or learn about the natural world, your local park has much to offer, even if you do have your own garden.

As infants develop, they continue to interpret what is dangerous, as well as learning how to soothe themselves through reading nonverbal cues and eventually, through understanding verbal language. They ask and receive reassurance repeatedly from their parents and other caregivers. A toddler seeing snow for the first time might say "Mamma!" with alarm, alternating looking at the snow with looking at her mother, pointing, and showing distress. Her mother reassures her, smiling, "It's just snow, honey." The toddler, having no idea what "snow" means or if it is dangerous, comes to recognize that her mother is not scared from her facial expression and reassuring tone, which she has learned to interpret over time, and concludes that snow is not dangerous.

History illustrates that there is no simple or enduring connection between climate or geography and economic success. At the time of the conquest of the Americas by Columbus, the areas which today include Mexico, Central America, Peru, and Bolivia held the great Aztec and Inca civilizations. These empires were politically centralized and complex, built roads, and provided famine relief. The Aztecs had both money and writing, and the Incas recorded vast amounts of information on knotted ropes. In sharp contrast, at the time of the Aztecs and Incas, the north and south of the area inhabited by the Aztecs and Incas, which today includes the United States, Canada, Argentina, and Chile, were mostly inhabited by Stone Age civilizations lacking these technologies. The tropics in the Americas were thus much richer than the temperate zones. The greater riches in the United States and Canada today represent a stark reversal of fortune relative to what was there when the Europeans arrived.

Adult humans have a particularly large brain compared to their body size. But the infant brain is generally only a quarter the size of an adult brain. The infant brain matures as much as possible in the womb, but the majority of the developmental work is still left to be done after birth. The downside of such an immature brain is that infants lack the ability to survive independently without the support of caregivers. However, the upside is that the infant brain is highly plastic and adaptable, making it capable of rapid learning and forming new neural connections in response to experiences and stimuli from the environment. This adaptability is why early childhood is such a critical period for brain development and why providing a stimulating and nurturing environment is essential for optimal cognitive, emotional, and social growth.

It is estimated that people age fifty and older spend about 48 percent of consumer dollars. They buy about 48 percent of all luxury cars, and they are responsible for about 80 percent of luxury travel. They even buy about 25 percent of all toys annually (there are about fifty-five million grandparents age fifty years and older in the United States). Nevertheless, marketing and merchandising programs commonly treat these customers as if they are much older and set in their ways. For example, there is the myth that older consumers are fixed on certain products and are unwilling to try new alternative products. Therefore, why should advertising of a new product be directed at older consumers? In fact, a survey of five hundred people over age fifty in shopping malls revealed that about 80 percent of them were quite willing to try new products.

As Pat Darcy says, our brains have evolved to make us happy when we engage in the arts. The exercise of artistic skills predates even the origin of our species. That the exercise of elastic thinking skills such as idea generation, pattern recognition, divergent thinking, and imagination is inherently rewarding is the reason people have always put energy into the arts, despite the lack of material reward (for most). In fact, material recompense can even get in the way of the pleasure we feel in such activities. Consider, for example, how the great Russian writer Fyodor Dostoyevsky responded when a Russian publisher paid him a fairly large advance to write a novel. Note that he had not been given strict guidelines regarding what to write; he had merely been asked to write something engaging in exchange for money. Despite that, in a letter to a friend, Dostoyevsky wrote, "I believe you have never written to order, by the yard, and have never experienced that hellish torture." The hellish torture he referred to wasn't just the great novelist being a drama queen; the prospect of being paid for his work gave Dostoyevsky writer's block. Dostoyevsky's was not an isolated case. Many recent studies in social psychology suggest that monetizing creative output can disrupt the processes that lead to innovation, saying that offering an extrinsic reward for an intrinsically enjoyable behavior can be counterproductive. That contradicts the ideas of traditional psychology, which is full of papers investigating the importance of reward in encouraging or even controlling a person's behavior. Difficulty in original thinking arises, says psychologist Teresa Amabile, "when you try for the wrong reasons."
