더메이킹스(The Makings)가 제작한 수프림 구문독해 CH 4 구문 20-21 변형 문제의 지문입니다.

1번 지문

Generally speaking, teenagers should get 8 to 10 hours of sleep each night. Unfortunately, many teens don't get enough sleep. Part of the problem is excessive schoolwork, and staying up late playing with their smartphones doesn't help either. However, much of the problem can be blamed on the circadian rhythm, or internal clock, of teenagers. Children's circadian rhythms change during their teen years. This is most likely due to melatonin, a hormone released by the brain. It is released later at night in teens than it is in kids and adults. This is the reason why teenagers find it difficult to go to bed early. So, on Saturday and Sunday mornings, when teens tend to sleep late and get a few extra hours of sleep, they are improving their mental health, along with their memory and ability to learn.

2번 지문

Everyone likes getting free stuff, but our economy can't function on things we don't pay for. Therefore, even if something seems to be free, you'll likely be paying for it other ways. That's the idea behind the old saying "there's no such thing as a free lunch." It originated in the mid-twentieth century, when a customer observed that the free food at bars wasn't really free ─ the price of the drinks was simply raised to pay for it. These days, it is most commonly used in economics, where it means that all transactions involve a trade-off. In other words, the moment you get something, you must accept that you're going to have to give up something in return. Understanding this could prevent you from parting with your money without even realizing what you have done.

3번 지문

The adolescent brain is not fully developed until its early twenties. This means the way the adolescents' decision-making circuits integrate and process information may put them at a disadvantage. One of their brain regions that matures later is the prefrontal cortex, which is the control center, tasked with thinking ahead and evaluating consequences. It is the area of the brain responsible for preventing you from sending off an initial angry text and modifying it with kinder words. On the other hand, the limbic system matures earlier, playing a central role in processing emotional responses. Because of its earlier development, it is more likely to influence decision-making. Decision-making in the adolescent brain is led by emotional factors more than the perception of consequences. Due to these differences, there is an imbalance between feeling-based decision-making ruled by the more mature limbic system and logical-based decision-making by the not-yet-mature prefrontal cortex. This may explain why some teens are more likely to make bad decisions.
