Research on emotion shows that positive emotions wear off quickly. Our emotional systems like newness. They like change. We adapt to positive life circumstances so that before too long, the new car, the new spouse, the new house ─ they don't feel so new and exciting anymore. But gratitude makes us appreciate the value of something, and when we do so, we extract more benefits from it; we're less likely to take it for granted. In effect, gratitude allows us to participate more in life. We notice the positives more, and that magnifies the pleasures you get from life. Instead of adapting to goodness, we celebrate goodness. We spend so much time watching things ─ movies, computer screens, sports ─ but with gratitude we become greater participants in our lives as opposed to spectators.

In a recent study comparing every Nobel Prize-winning scientist from 1901 to 2005 with typical scientists of the same era, both groups attained deep expertise in their respective fields of study. But the Nobel Prize winners were dramatically more likely to be involved in the arts than less accomplished scientists. A representative study of thousands of Americans showed similar results for creative people ─ entrepreneurs and inventors. People who started businesses and contributed to patent applications were more likely than their peers to have leisure time hobbies that involved drawing, painting, architecture, sculpture, and literature. Interest in the arts among entrepreneurs, inventors, and eminent scientists obviously reflects their curiosity and aptitude. People who are open to new ways of looking at science and business also tend to be fascinated by the expression of ideas and emotions through images, sounds, and words.

A tight-knit community can minimize the problem of street crime. However, informal social control also poses a threat to the diversity of behavior that exists in a pluralistic society, even though it may curb violent crime. Still, street crime would decline if interaction among the residents of a community were more frequent, and if social bonds were stronger. A sense of responsibility for other citizens and for the community as a whole would increase individuals' willingness to report crime to the police and the likelihood of their intervention in a crime in progress. Greater willingness of community residents to report crime to the police might also prevent the need for civilian police patrols. More interaction in public places and human traffic on the sidewalks would increase surveillance of the places where people now fear to go. More intense social ties would reinforce surveillance with a willingness to take action against offenders.

In his book Man's Search for Meaning (1946), Viennese psychiatrist Viktor Frankl explains that humans have two psychological strengths that allow us to endure painful and possibly devastating circumstances and to move forward: these are the capacity for decision, and freedom of attitude. Frankl emphasizes that we are not at the mercy of our environment or events, because we dictate how we allow them to shape us. Even suffering can be seen differently, depending on our interpretation of events. Frankl points to the case of one of his patients who suffered because he missed his dead wife. Frankl asked how it would have been if the patient had died first, and he responded that his wife would have found it very difficult. Frankl suggested that the patient has spared her this grief, but must now suffer the grief himself. In other words, the suffering becomes endurable by giving meaning to it.

Researchers have reported various nonverbal features of sarcasm. Most disagree as to whether nonverbal cues are essential to the perception of sarcasm or the emotion that prompts it. Even so, research confirms the finding that nonverbal cues are more credible than verbal cues, especially when verbal and nonverbal cues conflict. Also, nonverbal cues are better indicators of speaker intent. As the nature of sarcasm implies a contradiction between intent and message, nonverbal cues may "leak" and reveal the speaker's true mood as they do in deception. Ostensibly, sarcasm is the opposite of deception in that a sarcastic speaker typically intends the receiver to recognize the sarcastic intent; whereas, in deception the speaker typically intends that the receiver not recognize the deceptive intent. Thus, when communicators are attempting to determine if a speaker is sarcastic, they compare the verbal and nonverbal message and if the two are in opposition, communicators may conclude that the speaker is being sarcastic.

The spread of Western clothing to areas in which little or no clothing was worn in the past sometimes produced disastrous results in terms of health and cleanliness. In many such cases, people took over only one part of the clothing complex, that is, the wearing of clothes. They knew nothing of the care of clothing and in many cases lacked the necessary equipment for such care. When they had worn no clothing, their bodies got a cleansing shower in the rain, and the bare skin dried quickly in the sun and air. When they obtained clothing, however, a shower meant wet clothes that did not dry so quickly as bare bodies, and pneumonia or other lung diseases sometimes resulted. Often they had little or no water for washing clothes, even if they had known how to do it. There were no fresh clothes to change into so people simply wore what they had until the clothes fell apart.

The news media are hungry for new findings, and reporters often latch onto ideas from the scientific laboratories before they have been fully tested. Also, a reporter who lacks a strong understanding of science may misunderstand or misreport complex scientific principles. To tell the truth, sometimes scientists get excited about their findings, too, and leak them to the press before they have been through a thorough review by the scientists' peers. As a result, the public is often exposed to late-breaking nutrition news stories before the findings are fully confirmed. Then, when the hypothesis being tested fails to hold up to a later challenge, consumers feel betrayed by what is simply the normal course of science at work.

Participating in sports is quite different from watching sports. Yet in sport studies, these two activities are often lumped together statistically and anecdotally. Combining them only adds to the confusion of the value of each, leads to suspect conclusions, and interferes with the assessment of the overall influence of a sport. For example, many people would rate football as the most popular sport in the United States. Based on spectator interest, this is a reasonable conclusion. But if we look at participation, football is popular only through high school and only with boys. Beyond age 18, football is not a reasonable option due to the number of players required, lack of equipment, and risk of injury. Thus, it is more accurate to say that football is the most popular spectator sport in the United States but rates far down the list in participation.

When people cut back on carbohydrates (or processed foods or whatever), they usually end up consuming fewer calories ─ even when they're not trying to restrict their calorie intake. For example, a study found that people who followed a strict low-carb diet but were otherwise allowed to eat as much as they wanted ended up reducing their calorie intake by about the same amount as people who were consciously restricting their calories. There are a couple of things going on here. First, when people have a limited variety of foods to choose from, they tend to eat less than they do when presented with a lot of options. Secondly, when people avoid carbohydrates, they generally increase their intake of protein and fat. Because these nutrients are digested more slowly than carbohydrates, meals that are higher in protein and fat tend to keep you satisfied longer than meals that are high in carbohydrates. As a result, people who cut back on carbs often report that they aren't as hungry between meals ─ and may snack less.

A song does not come to life until performers take it off the written page. For better or for worse, the composer does not know how individuals will interpret his work. Composers make many markings on the written page to communicate their intentions for a song for singers and pianists but those intentions are not always honored. It may seem that clear key and time signatures, tempo and other markings would be enough, but singers and pianists do not always strictly adhere to markings. An authentic performance of a song also depends on the difficulty of the piece and the abilities and limitations of the performers. For example, if a young singer were trying to perform a late Debussy song and had never sung in French, the challenges of the language could prevent her from mastering the nuances of the piece. Vocal deficiencies can draw attention away from the music and to the singer himself; for this reason, it is critically important that singers perform music that is appropriate to their age and abilities and the same is true for pianists.
